I actually like the look, but - only two characters? No Koshiro? Come on, y'all, get it together if this is an actual numbered sequel.

I have been dreaming with a SoR 4 for years. Can't believe its happening.

But, as we live in an imperfect world, I didn't like the art style. Hopefully I will change my mind when more content is shown.

Good art or not I'll be there day one.

This is sick.

SoR brings me way back. This and Sonic mania is an insane nostalgia blast. Hopefully they can make a good series of it, it deserves it.

I was honestly super negative of the art in the remake of The Dragon's Trap because it was actively going for such a different style, but it really grew on me as I played. You can tell the people that made it really *got* how Wonder Boy games work and feel. I could go on for hours about how smart their aesthetic choices were, but the amount of love put into that game's art and all of it's animations was truly brilliant.

I have extremely positive vibes towards Streets of Rage 4. I honestly think it will be a home run. Just need confirmation that it will not have any RPG nonsense and has at least a handful of new Yuzo Koshiro songs.

Looks like a flash game... I would've preferred if htey went for something like Sonic Mania...

1) Okay, can we please STOP the "flash animation" hot takes? This would be a completely unacceptable insult to hand-drawn animation in an actual animation buff community.

2) Why is it that the most vocal art-style complainers immediately push for a 16-bit retraux style?

It was one thing for Mania to do it, not just because there wasn't a 2D Sonic in years, but because 2D Sonic-like games never actually evolved past the limited 16-bit hardware.

But 2D Beat-em-ups?

We already know what Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3 would look like with no hardware restrictions.

It's called Final Fight on arcades.

And outside of Sega buffs, SoR's reputation has basically amounted to being "in Final Fight's shadow".

A new art style should be welcomed, if in part to give SoR an enhanced sense of self-identity.

Wary of the artstyle, but I am confident they will nail the gameplay.

The beat'em up genre is back, baby!!!

I'm not really sure the art style fits Streets of Rage, but to say it looks like a flash game is some real stupid bullshit.

It's okay to have 2D art that doesn't look super-pixelated, you guys.
Yeah this is where I am with the art style. I'm not sure it suits SOR because it doesn't look gritty enough to my eyes but looked at in isolation from the series it looks good and not "like a flash game".

About the "Blaze looks too young compared to Axel" comments, remember these guys were disgraced ex-cops at 21-22.

Axel could be a grizzled, 25 year old guy for all we know lol

It's essentially code for "lazy devs" and it's an observation that has no value considering that the game isn't animated in Flash. That's putting aside the fact that Flash is as capable as any software for creating incredibly detailed animation. Someone who is willing to make that sort of comment is really just outing themselves for how little they understand.

FF seems to have lived on solely through Street Fighter. I don't see a lot of reverence for the original games.

That isn't to say Final Fight is held in an especially high regard nowadays either, but there's a reason people wanted it on their arcade1up cabinets and it's delay was considered a disappointment.
And Final Fight actually tried (and failed, mind, but actually did try) to break past the 3D ceiling, unlike SoR.

And this should say a LOT about how much a MIRACLE it is that we're getting a Streets of Rage 4 before a "Final Fight 4" now.

Remember when Bernie Stolar got a SoR4 pitched canceled because he LITERALLY did not know what SoR WAS?

… OK, This is legit almost Sonic Mania Levels in "They got the right people to do this!".

WOW. What...? Why TODAY? Not that it's a bad day, but UNEXPECTED WEIRD.

There's so much here I'm crazy thankful for, compared to all the possibilities.

  • It's not overly gritty / dark / "mature" / vile. Going Final Fight Streetwise-ish was always a possibility.
  • Grand ole 16 bit era "Big Sprites = LOVE" style characters. These look like the characters are the stars of the show, which many modern games fail at.
  • LIZARDCUBE probably has the best HD 2D in the business right now. They've easily outdone things like Ubisoft's Ubiart engine for me, and they meet some of the best of Lab Zero's heights. They actually get things DONE, too. It might not be Chrono Break-style Spritework, but this is easily the next best option, and probably the best at feeling like it has room to GROW beyond this one-off release. These guys know how to fit great animation and style into classic gameplay better than many.
  • GUARD CRUSH GAMES Streets of Fury was excellent back on XBLIG. It's a game that adapted some of the best of Guardian Heroes and SOR into one, in a way I still feel many devs fail at. These guys know what they're doing. Besides the SORRemake team, this is pretty much the best group of fans that could be asked to linearly update SOR.
How is Dotemu suddenly getting their hands on making this stuff possible? First Windjammers 2, now this? That's completely wild.

Oh, and the girl with the Snake.. scarf... thing? I totally get the vibe she's going to be the type we can defeat and thus add to our team, Shiva / Roo style. This definitely helps the "Why ain't Adam here?!?" warning klaxons that are going off in my head. Wouldn't be surprised if she's related to him, too. He always seems to be the method that other people of color get tossed into this long night on the Streets... of RAGE.

Sega's slowly but surely propping up many of the right steps, now. The fact they're even allowing this (after we've seen so many others have been denied) speaks a lot about their new direction. Without a doubt instantly shot to the top ranks of "Most anticipated", and the fact we could see more at PAX already is just icing on the cake.

I'm not worried about the lack of Yuzo Koshiro announcement yet, either. We know he's still active, and they've done too much right not to have him involved. He, and / or people he approves of, will definitely have some influence.

This is absolutely not true. Streets of Rage 2 in particular is very commonly seen as the best in the genre even to this day and still gets rather constant re-releases. The series' music is also constantly considered some of Yuzo Koshiro's best work too. Final Fight kept it's rather waning relevance solely due to Street Fighter.

I liked the fem Shiva counterpart.

Is this actually true though?

Yeah. SoR was king on 16-bit consoles, but the original FF arcade release is king overall. The FF sequels weren't very good.

Edit: why is everyone talking about comparative relevance? SoR peaked with 2 way back in the early '90s. FF peaked before that, in '89. It's not like SoR has had any output to blow FF out of the water.

The best part of the original games were the soundtrack. The original games were developed by Yuzo Koshiro's company. If he's not involved then what's the point. It'll just be "generic retro-style beat em up trying to capitalize on SoR nostalgia."

Yeah, I remember people saying that about Hollow Knight and they may have said it about Dragon's Trap remake (genuinely can't remember).

At least no one has said Indivisible looks like a flash game, right?

Artstyle looks too western. It doesn't look terrible, but I feel like it could look a lot better.

Nice!

Time to evade all the topics on this game though. I've seen that ERA's/GAF pessimism is already on this topic, so I'll avoid it and try the game without this filter.

LOL. Remake had everything any Streets of Rage fan could want and then some. Only people that truly love the series would bother to implement a toggle system for the jump type, special meter, and weapon damage.

Nice additions sure but 3 minor options don't make a game good. It was like having 3 games blended into one with shite original content tacked on. Rudra was garbage. I liked fighting on top of the train and that's pretty much it for new contnent. I like train levels in games. The grabbing felt "off". When I play the series, I'm more of a grappler and the grappling didn't feel right in Remake. I was excited for the longest time but when I finally played it, it was kind of shit. I'm a huge fan of the series and other than a few little options like switching to different versions of characters etc. the game was garbage. Maybe garbage is a bit too harsh but if that was official, I would be very disappointed. Thankfully, it was just some random fan game so it's overated as they usually are and SEGA were razzled on by 20 pissed off Remake fans saying it should be official or some shit. I already have 1-3, why would I need Remake? It doesn't add anything special.

Excited but the art style doesn't work for me really. Loved how Dragon's Trap looked, but this seems noticeably worse and not really fitting.

I guess I want moody neon-reflected puddles of urban decay. Still excited to see how it ultimately turns out though.
