Of course it kinda looks like one, it's directed by Miyazaki. But it's an action game, with no RPG elements. No souls/blood that you loose when you die, etc...
Just go back to the E3 reveal thread. Tons of shit post about how it's not Bloodborne 2/a new souls like.

So I didn't know it was them at the time but pre-Demon Souls I had 2 experiences with them.

1. Lost Kingdoms II - I actually really loved this game. Thought it was really fun and the card mechanics and combat were good. Cool levels, unsure if I ever beat it. I do recall it having a decent amount of replayablity. For sure put some good hours into it.
2. Eternal Ring - I thought this was the worst piece of shit ever when I played it. I forgot how I got it, but I think it was for free or super cheap. I was like, "First person RPG? What is this garbage". This was before I had played stuff like Oblivion or even really got into First Person Shooters. It's probably not that bad if I tired it now.

So I was 50/50 with them, but also had no idea who they were. I didn't find out they had made the two other games until after Demon Souls had come out.

How come you played it if it was bad (Eternal Ring)

Edit: sorry: Overlooked it

What was From Software before the Soulsborne games?

Fan favorites among niche.

King's Field was cult following for those who loved depressive dungeon crawlers.
Armored Core was for mecha fans. It was mainstream enough in Japan, but niche overseas (though ac1 and ac2 were more or less "well known")
Echo Night for those who was deep into japanese horror games.

etc

that didn't really have any great games

you're not one of loyal fans, i see ><

I used to love Armored Core. I think that's the way of a lot of Devs though. Start of making a heavy indie of some kind, and when it does well get the backing to go for gold.

First time I knew of them is when I fired up my imported Demon's Souls copy. God I still remember my sweaty hands fighting against the Tower Knight and thought these guys are fucking geniuses

Do you consider Sekiro to be an action game? Or fighting. Do you even think the same audience would like it?

I only knew them as the "King's Field guys" back on PS1 really, they weren't on my radar at all because that series flat-out just baffled me back in the day.

They did a horrible JRPG on 360 where one of your party members was a gay stereotype and generally the whole thing was laughable trash.

Enchanted Arms

Other than that I dunno really.

What you all don't say.

They always had wonderful soundtracks in games.

I'd say horrible thing that Sakuraba doing souldbourne was a step back (he did it well though, and starting with Bloodborne internal team was allowed again).

I remember them as a quirky but solid dev studio. I usually associated them as a mech game dev since Front Mission was cool and I was in to Armored Core.

Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 were ok at the time, I enjoyed Enchanted Arms despite it being terrible with some homophobic undertones and I remember hating EverGrace.

So pretty low on my radar with some ok weird titles.

You know, thinking about it more, I'm pretty sure I got it for sale from a Garage Sale in my old neighborhood. That sounds right.

I have no problems with first person RPGs now, but back in the day when all I played was PS2 and PC 3rd person games, I didn't understand the appeal of FP games. Wasn't until I got BF2142 that I started to get into FP games, which then exploded when I bought Modern Warfare.

Might have to watch some Eternal Ring footage on YT to see if it was bad or if I just was a dumb shit for thinking it was bad for being in first person.

But were Tenchu games considered good (triple A)?

At the time of release, there was nothing at all on the consoles like Tenchu. It also happened to release right before Metal Gear Solid and the first Thief. They were all stealth based games, but none of them played similary. A lot of people remember Tenchu, and Sekiro really does seem like Tenchu Souls. They definitely were not AAA though, but more like the mid-tier, "AA" games that almost don't exist anymore. Was Demon's Souls and the first Dark Souls considered "AAA" though either? I don't know what their budgets were, but they couldn't have been 30+ million, and they certainly don't have that AAA presentation (but they more than make up for it with atmosphere).

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins was my first From Software game. Loved that one and Tenchu 2 the most out of the series.

But it wasn't. Just like Bethesda didn't develop the most recent DOOM.

To me they were the company who made Armored Core, a series that a few of my friends played and love but I never tried (and still haven't). I figured they were probably a decent niche developer. Chances are my sentiment was fairly common before Demon's Souls (or even up to Dark Souls maybe) but I'm sure they had a very strong fan base even then. They just hadn't penetrated the mass market.

Even today I'm sure there are plenty of people that view them as a B studio that makes a specific type of game that appeals to a specific type of gamer, and if they did something outside of their comfort zone would fail. I think that's silly personally, but it's certainly fair to wonder if a developer who primarily makes one type of game can transition to a completely different genre and retain the level of quality they are know for. For instance the studio that makes Forza: Horizon is rumored to be making some sort of open world RPG I think - it's reasonable to be very skeptical despite that studio making consistent and high quality games for around a decade now.

I thought their output wasn't that special, though I was really jealous of Otogi being Xbox exclusive. I wanted it to be on PS2 so bad.

Later on, I was really skeptical and hesitant to buy Demon's Souls, but bought it after friends begged me to try it, and saw the great reviews.

The Tenchu game on PS2 played nice, but it was not as fun as the previous Tenchu game.
Also the 360 Tenchu was not great, to put it mildly.

Knew them because of Armored Core and Otogi and thought those were cool games, but never really kept FROM on my radar until Demon's Souls

I actually had Evergrace for the PS2. Really weird game with storytelling/atmosphere kind of reminiscent of Souls games. Wasn't very fun though.

From Software, for me, were the guys who made Armored Core and some other mech games.

After Souls games (which I'm not interested in), they're now the guys who used to make Armored Core.

It feels to me like when your friend becomes rich and famous, and suddenly they won't talk to you anymore even though you supported them when they weren't popular.

I think the names of their games were better known than the name of their company. Armored Core in particular. One of those developers that did very well within their niche.
