One of the most terrifying thoughts is the Trump Administration of all presidencies being the ones to make contact and represent the human race to aliens.

Going by that design, the fpace Force project should just be just that, a project being worked on by the current branches. The Navy in particular probably has the most knowledge and resources in ship building, so they can begin R&D for space defense projects, and maybe 20 years from now, examine whether a whole separate branch is necessary.

I agree with this sentiment. The idea of investing more into space-based technologies and getting humanity out of its cradle is definitely an idea that I'm all for. But Trump and the current administration are not the ones to do this, since they have no interest in it. However, at least with Trump and Pence currently saying this, millions of Americans that HATED the idea of going to space have now flipped the script and are claiming they've loved this idea for years, just to Own The Libs, so at least, temporarily, more Americans care about a good thing if only to spite their fellow Americans.
The worst part is that someone is going to suggest to Trump that there are asteroids in the belt that are probably made of pure coal, or maybe even asbestos, and then he'll go on rallies talking about how he'll MAGA by sending miners into space.

We know China in specific is continuing to develop the capability to destroy our command and control satellites.
In any war situation not having those would be a massive blow to US capabilities.
Sure it could be the Air Forces job to protect orbital installations around Earth, but either way more money where it could really benefit isn't a bad thing.
It's not like they are building more tanks to put in storage or useless shit the Army does not need just to keep contractors happy.

Founded on December 31, 2015 as part of the first wave of reforms of the PLA, the People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force is the newest branch of the PLA. Initial announcements regarding the Strategic Support Force did not provide much detail, but Yang Yujun of the Chinese Ministry of Defense described it as a combination of all support forces. Additionally, commentators speculate that it will include high-tech operations forces such as space, cyberspace and electronic warfare operations units, independent of other branches of the military.[33] Another expert, Yin Zhuo, said that "the major mission of the PLA Strategic Support Force is to give support to the combat operations so that the PLA can gain regional advantages in the astronautic war, space war, network war and electromagnetic space war and ensure smooth operations."[34]

Kosmicheskie Voyska Rossii) are a branch of the Russian Aerospace Forces, that provides aerospace warning, air sovereignty, and protection for Russia. Having been reestablished following the 1 August 2015 merger between the Russian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces after a 2011 dissolving of the branch. The Russian Space Forces were originally formed on the 10 August 1992 and the creation of the Russian Armed Forces.[2] The organisation shared control of the Baikonur Cosmodrome with the Russian Federal Space Agency. It also operated the Plesetsk and the Svobodny Cosmodromes. However the Russian Space Forces were dissolved in July 1997 and incorporated into the Strategic Missile Troops.[3]

The Space Force is just a repacked Air Force Space Command. There is actually not much space at all in the Space Force.
