How else are they going to keep illegal aliens at bay?

Clearly they're trying to combat illegal immigration on all frontiers.

Will this cheapen commercial space flights? Because if so... good. I want to witness that in my lifetime.

Conspiracy theorist in me wants to believe that they know something we don't and this is getting an early jump on it.

Realist in me knows this will just be used as pork for spending hundreds of millions of dollars on shady shit and billing it as "$1,000,000 Space Toilet"
They know plenty of stuff we don't. Military Secrets.

Military in space

Military finds lots of money in space

Rich white guys create a private sector so they can get money in space

They need people to mine the money in space

The standard for space work is reduce so rich white guys can hire in masses for space work

Space travel becomes more common because of it and eventually opens up to the public and public transport business and such

Space travel is achieved in a Evil way with greed in mind

I'm okay with this

NASA and everyone else is taking way to fucking long

"Space Force" will be a bunch of radar operators at the Pentagon with joysticks and camera feeds remote-controlling orbital drones.

That's about as techwise and affordable as any US budget will allow for a "Space Force".

More like to track and count the shot down satellites by Chinese anti-satellite missiles. There is nothing in geostationary orbit which couldn't be destroyed by ASATs.

The world's largest (BY FAR) military continues to spend more money on the military while its people die of curable diseases because they cant afford treatment.

Good priorities.

Hey.

Remember the thickos inferring that America didn't have proper healthcare and shit because of NATO freeloaders forcing Big Poppa to muscle up for everybody else?

Yeah.

I don't see the harm in laying some groundwork and having discussions about the purpose and scope of work that would be done. Environmental and climate research would be a great use of resources, for example. But:

Some corporation is going to make a ton of money on this and nothing will ever come from it.

This is what will actually happen and Trump might even suggest putting weapons up there too. It's just an excuse to pour money into military contractor coffers.

Wow. Are they really going to do this? It makes you wonder if they had some contact with aliens and they aren't making it public and think now that they had contact they need a new army to prepare for Space stuff. Anything other than this explanation is literally waste of money.
One of the most terrifying thoughts is the Trump Administration of all presidencies being the ones to make contact and represent the human race to aliens.

They hate other human beings because their skin tone is darker than theirs, imagine what they'd do if they ran into a race with scales.

Overall this will just be Reagan's Star Wars all over again.

The USAF was originally part of the Army. Pretty sure it was addressed that the USAF is not currently budgeted for or equipped to take this on from logistical or financial budgeting reasons. Starting a new branch is likely the best way to plan and roll something like this out for a variety of reasons.
Going by that design, the fpace Force project should just be just that, a project being worked on by the current branches. The Navy in particular probably has the most knowledge and resources in ship building, so they can begin R&D for space defense projects, and maybe 20 years from now, examine whether a whole separate branch is necessary.

I agree with this sentiment. The idea of investing more into space-based technologies and getting humanity out of its cradle is definitely an idea that I'm all for. But Trump and the current administration are not the ones to do this, since they have no interest in it. However, at least with Trump and Pence currently saying this, millions of Americans that HATED the idea of going to space have now flipped the script and are claiming they've loved this idea for years, just to Own The Libs, so at least, temporarily, more Americans care about a good thing if only to spite their fellow Americans.

The worst part is that someone is going to suggest to Trump that there are asteroids in the belt that are probably made of pure coal, or maybe even asbestos, and then he'll go on rallies talking about how he'll MAGA by sending miners into space.

Lame ass distraction to distract and divert even more money into the traditional military instead of actually giving it to something useful like research and NASA.

I'm actually a bit surprised at the responses.

We know China in specific is continuing to develop the capability to destroy our command and control satellites.

In any war situation not having those would be a massive blow to US capabilities.

Sure it could be the Air Forces job to protect orbital installations around Earth, but either way more money where it could really benefit isn't a bad thing.

It's not like they are building more tanks to put in storage or useless shit the Army does not need just to keep contractors happy.

Russia and China has have similar branches of military. Just FYI.

Strategic Support Force[edit]
Main article: People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force
Founded on December 31, 2015 as part of the first wave of reforms of the PLA, the People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force is the newest branch of the PLA. Initial announcements regarding the Strategic Support Force did not provide much detail, but Yang Yujun of the Chinese Ministry of Defense described it as a combination of all support forces. Additionally, commentators speculate that it will include high-tech operations forces such as space, cyberspace and electronic warfare operations units, independent of other branches of the military.[33] Another expert, Yin Zhuo, said that "the major mission of the PLA Strategic Support Force is to give support to the combat operations so that the PLA can gain regional advantages in the astronautic war, space war, network war and electromagnetic space war and ensure smooth operations."[34]

The Russian Space Forces (Russian: Космические войска России, tr. Kosmicheskie Voyska Rossii) are a branch of the Russian Aerospace Forces, that provides aerospace warning, air sovereignty, and protection for Russia. Having been reestablished following the 1 August 2015 merger between the Russian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces after a 2011 dissolving of the branch. The Russian Space Forces were originally formed on the 10 August 1992 and the creation of the Russian Armed Forces.[2] The organisation shared control of the Baikonur Cosmodrome with the Russian Federal Space Agency. It also operated the Plesetsk and the Svobodny Cosmodromes. However the Russian Space Forces were dissolved in July 1997 and incorporated into the Strategic Missile Troops.[3]

The Russian Space Forces were once again reformed as an independent troop on the 1 June 2001 under a military reorganisation. However, by December 2011, it was dissolved once again and this time replaced by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces.[4]

On 1 August 2015, the Russian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces were merged to form the Russian Aerospace Forces.[5][6] The Russian Space Forces were reestablished as a result, and are now one of three sub-branches of the new armed force.[7]

The Space Force is just a repacked Air Force Space Command. There is actually not much space at all in the Space Force.

In all seriousness, what does a space force mean in practice?

If we're talking about soldiers in space, at what point is it more practical to send up robots?

Look into the kind of shit they are proposing, tho.

Orbital supply drops.

Intergalactic exploration.

wat.

I'll try to find a link later. It's bananas. It's going to be the most wondrous waste of money ever devised.

Most of it will never pass muster, but hey, MONEY.

Edit: Here's Why The USAF Is Suddenly Talking Cargo Drops From Space And Spying On Other Galaxies -
As the push for a Space Force gains momentum, the service seems intent on showing it's serious about space. Maybe too serious.

On Aug. 3, 2018, our good friend Stephen Trimble, who is editor of Flightglobal's Americas Bureau, alerted us that the issue of watching for threats outside the Milky Way had come up in question and answer session with U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Veralinn Jamieson, the service's Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, after her speech at an event the Air Force Association had hosted the day before. At a separate gathering, U.S. Air Force General Carlton Everhart, head of Air Mobility Command, had off-handedly raised the possibility of using space as a huge cargo dump.
That's the USAF trying to one-up the USSF. This is going to be the grandest mess.

Such an American thing to do, trying to militarize space. Then again Russia also does it, so I guess your president wanted to follow his idol.
