I feel like I wanna throw a "fuck Nixon" in here just because it seems like we're all being nice to him, but really he's just pedestrian levels of evil in comparison to Trump.

Well he's right that the comparisons to Nixon isn't fair... I mean, now he's got 2 impeachment's to Nixon's 1.

How could Nixon ever compare to that? ;)

Nixon had the "grace" to resign before an impeachment ever came. So 2-0.

Not even an exaggeration. This shit has surpassed Watergate hundreds of times over. Nixon was an asshole but he wasnt an idiot as he knew when to fucking stop and walk away. People arent even going to mention Nixon's impeachment to the degree they'll mention Trump going forward. Hes effectively erasing the bad shit Nixon did from the public consciousness. 20-30 years from now if you want to know what Nixon did, you'll have to read a book about it, Trump shit is just going to be known the way Nixon's shit was known up until this year.

Nixon would probably be so overjoyed to know he's no longer seen as the most corrupt president ever

I loved that I saw a quote somewhere from a White House aide that said that from now on parents are going to tell kids when they lie that they don't want to end up like Trump, he is forever going to be the example of someone whose lies completely destroyed their reputation

The big difference is Nixon actually had enough shame to resign, Trump has absolutely zero dignity or shame and that's what ultimately makes him so dangerous

Nixon did try to divide the country by demonizing blacks and Jews. Seems fair to me.
Nixon was still a much better president.

Nixon had people break into a hotel. Trump had a mob try to kill people in the US Capitol. Who is to say which is worse?

Nixon was a piece of shit but he was competent and self-aware enough to know when he had gone too far.

Question as a Mexican for my American friends:

I only know Nixon for the Watergate case. Other than that... was he a good president?
Nixon is...complicated.

He was fairly progressive for a Republican of his era on several levels, he ended American involvement in Vietnam in 1973, ending the military draft that same year. Nixon's visit to China in 1972 eventually led to diplomatic relations between the two nations, and he gained the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union the same year. His administration generally transferred power from federal control to state control. He imposed wage and price controls for 90 days, enforced desegregation of Southern schools, established the Environmental Protection Agency, and began the War on Cancer. He also presided over the Apollo 11 moon landing, which signaled the end of the Space Race. He was re-elected in one of the largest electoral landslides in American history in 1972 when he defeated George McGovern.

That said, he was still absolutely a crook and a liar. His track record as far as Latin America goes is ABYSMAL, he had almost universal support of fascist junta's and personally directed Henry Kissinger to orchestrate a US backed Coup in Chile which lead to the Pinochet Regime and the assassination of democratically elected socialist Salvador Allende. He also demonized Jews and POC behind closed doors and instituted policies that arguably made their lives considerably worse.

Look on the bright side. If he's looking forward to a huge sendoff and flight to Florida at least he's not planning on murdering us all!

It's funny 'cause Nixon, as much as he was very much a crook, was progressive compared to the modern GOP politician. He founded the EPA, whereas the modern GOP and Trump are basically gutting it or giving it away to oil cronies.

Nixon is...complicated.
Pretty much. Very much a mixed bag.

Nixon was a racist, drunk, asshole who would get drunk and threaten to launch nukes, but he did some good unlike Trump. Neither were really good.

he wasn't, nah. nixon was pretty bad

the vietnam war shit, the cold war shit, kent state shootings, lots of bad shit happened under his watch

his competence and acknowledgement to changing times are the only things that gave him small moments of not being shitty

trump's very much lacking that, trump pushed heavily back against social change

Agreed. Get rid of Watergate and Nixon's legacy becomes his diplomacy with China, the EPA, and the "war" on cancer, aka everything that helped him win the largest landslide ever. Not saying he deserves it, but people are going to have no problem rehabilitating Tricky Dick, especially in contrast to fucking Trump of all fuckers.

It wouldn't surprise me if the only thing from Watergate that lasts is the use of "-gate" as a suffix.

y'all know that you don't have to praise Nixon, right?... 🙃

They're all bad.
In my opinion no President is "good" because the amount of power the executive office wields almost demands that whoever holds the office must become a monster in some form or another.

With that being said, there are varying levels of "bad" and it does us no good to simply lump all Presidents together under one banner of they're all terrible. Presidents are people, people are complicated.

Nixon was a crook, a liar, a racist, and a war criminal. He was also an environmentalist, an expert diplomat and his economic reforms completely changed the way the world economy works to this very day.

Like I said, complicated.

Nixon was a PoS, save for a few things (and the EPA came around when the Cleveland River caught on fire, lowish bar), but frankly as bad as Watergate was it was it the equivalent of littering vs either of Trumps Impeachments.
