If they put out a new console every year, it would resolve your problem OP.
Developers would just support the hardware that makes sense for the game they are making.
If you're playing a game on 5 year old hardware and it's not running great, just upgrade!

the "cross gen nightmare period" is usually a golden age of games that have been cooking for a whole console generation.

You will be surprised when you see the first next-gen games on consoles.
Why? I expect them to either go with pretty visuals and 30fps, which just gets me sour, or 60fps and what we already have on high end PCs today. And since they're still a year away I expect PC gaming to have jumped up yet another step before the consoles are actually out and we'll have seen all kinds of tech demos by then.

I'm the person that wishes each gen could be extended by two to three more years. I'm a software first person, always. It's annoying that early gen games tend to be rough outside of first party offerings, and all the cross gen nonsense.

No load times will be nice, if thats actually true, but sadly I think devs are still going to prioritize pure visual fidelity over framerate and general performance.

Just...play games. Don't torture yourself worrying about generations. That's like me saying "I don't want to eat this nice meal because they might add an extra french fry in it next year." I'm just missing out on the meal and watching everyone else eat.

I don't believe that RE2/RE7/GTsport/MK11 etc look like 2012 pc games. All of them run at 60fps on console.

Today pc gamers play games that made with ps4-One in mind, when we move in the next-gen the new base will be miles ahead. So it's just impossible to not have a huge step.
By saying that next gen consoles will match todays pc graphics is like saying that the last of us remastered(and every remastered from PS360 gen) is on par graphically with LOUS part 2 and every PS4 exclusive.

Most PS5/Xbox Two games are going to be cross-gen for a year or two, anyway. I'm not really that excited for the new consoles, especially since I still have a 1080p TV.

Real life is very visually pleasing. Perhaps traveling would be a better investment than video games.

Im ready for next gen, I can't wait. For now I'm playing outer worlds, will be getting FFVII, then finishing up the gen with Cyberpunk, then on to next gen.

I almost thought about buying an Xbox with trading in my PS Pro just to sub to game pass for the remainder of the generation, but FFVII is a must buy for me.

Completely focused on next gen. So much so that I'm not buying Last of Us Part 2, Cyberpunk, FF7 Remake or Avengers in hopes of supped up next gen versions. Even if they're not significantly better they'll fatten up the launch line up for me.

I agree

I really wish the new generation started with a bang instead of this upscaled cross gen stuff we will probably be getting for like a year.

I get excited for specific games way more than hardware, hardware capability, or "gens" in general. Though I guess maybe that's pretty normal if I play 95% on PC.

And honesty once you get into PC gaming all of this generation stuff feels asinine. You just play what you want to play, and upgrade when you feel like you need to.

I don't feel that that's entirely true. Next gen consoles allow businesses which produce multiplatform games to justify investments into a 'higher median level of quality' across platforms. This usually means PC settings will go even higher. Not mentioning console exclusives, which for 1 to 2 years past new gen start (and sometimes further) can compete with the very best of PC games, regardless of hardware power. I mean...look at Uncharted 4.

To clarify something. I don't believe I can afford to buy a good PC and maintain its advantage over the top console versions. I also love many console exclusives and Rockstar games and Final Fantasy, which either are severely delayed on PC or never arrive at all. Some of the most impressive visual games of all time have had this issue on this gen.

I'm sure they can be visually pleasing, I'm just not sure they can run smoothly as well. Driveclub, Ryse, Killzone, Forza Horizon, The Order, Second Son, Dead Rising etc etc ran at 30fps. The prettiest games still run at 30fps: RDR2, GoW, Horizon ZD, etc. And I expect the first wave of launch titles to go with that as well or the visual jump won't be as big as you'd want from a new gen.

Having a PC would probably help with that since most of the time you're always ahead of the curve so you never really run into generations in a traditional way. Every time it's truly time to upgrade you can usually do it before there are games that really tap out the highest end of what PC already has or at the same time.

As for consoles, since I got a Switch with the rest of the them, I've been doing fine game wise. Tons of stuff for me to play and it's been pretty active for me this year where as if I just had a ps4 and xbox one this year was a bit more on the lighter side since all I've played is RE2 and Sekiro (both on pc but thats basically all consoles had too other than Death Stranding which is coming to PC too but I also don't want to play it). Having a high end PC and all the consoles kind of makes next generation underwhelming for me. With stuff like SSD suppsedly being this huge selling point when Star Citizen is already doing that kinda stuff right now and quite frankly not every game type needing that so other than faster load times I just think it'll be all that special for most games.

I know some people are hype for next gen, but if I'm being honest this is the least hype I've been for a console generation in a while. I just don't think it's going to be impactful as the PS4 or even Xbox 360 generations. It's probably the mid gen refresh consoles that make me feel this way and also the upcoming feature set not sounding too groundbreaking.

off course 30 fps games will have a huge generation leap difference compared to any game today, but also many 60 fps console games will look again better than today games. This happens every new gen with the next gen titles. No cross-gen. Many of the new games will be cross-gen.

I'm more interested in next gen for sure, not even for the games but I just love the lead up, the rumors, the announcements, us talking and debating here, the podcasts from people like EZA, the trailers, hearing devs steak about their new tech and engines. All of it. I love the games too but I have so many games that are good to play now and most of the things i get hyped about game wise end up becoming some GAAS which I hate or just end up disappointing so it's better that I don't get to hyped. The ones I am still interested/hyped in will be best played on pc or have a next gen version quickly. Games like cyberpunk and last of us 2.

Excited about next gen, but more than happy with current gen stuff...so much to play still, so I'm in no rush. Having BC on the next consoles will be a blessing for sure this next go around.

I'm not very much interested in tech, I care a lot more about games. Usually a lot of great games arrive at the end of a generation so it's surely a good time to play what is currently coming out.

I mainly play games on my Switch these days so the arrival of the next generation isn't nearly as enticing to me as the Breath of the Wild sequel title which I hope to see released around the same time.

I still have various degrees of interest in stuff like The Last of Us 2, Death Stranding, Jedi: Fallen Order, and (more than anything) the FFVII remake saga, so to say I don't care about other consoles now would be an exaggeration. But I've found a part of myself that I hadn't realized was "missing" with Nintendo's modern offerings so the excitement of PS5 and Scarlett is undercut.

I understand your sentiment, OP, but I feel the opposite. This gen, the only reason I got a PS4 so early (about six months after launch) is because my PS3 had the YLOD. This time around, my PS4 Pro is only 1.5 years old, so unless something quite unexpectedly happens, I'll likely hold off on upgrading to PS5 for a good 18 months to 2 years after launch.

I have so many games to play from this gen left, too, that it's ridiculous. I sure didn't help matters any by jumping into both "Trails of" series and Yakuza series this gen, and now plan to play all mainline games in each. PS4 is at a level graphically where whatever relatively incremental (imo) improvements PS5 makes won't have any real sway on me. I barely notice the difference between 4K and 1080p, and FPS have never bothered me unless there's huge/noticeable dips.

For me next gen will start at least 1 o 2 years after launch, so it's not a issue for me. The only games that can change my mind about when to buy a new console are Bloodborne 2 / Dark Souls 4 hehehe.

But it does kind of suck to be losing interest in current games because of their predominantly visual limitations.

One very serious advice:

Happyness doesn't exist tomorrow or yesterday.
Start to enjoy the now and here, otherwise your 2 years will become 5 years, 10 years etc.
We don't last that long to look for the future (major problem when you thing about what we do to the planet), start enjoying what's here, right now!

As someone who didnt buy the mid-gen upgrades I do want the next gen console to be out already, but part of it is that they will be backwards compatible and will probably make use of the stronger hardware (especially xbox), so I want to play the games im already playing there.

Next gen is worth it only after two years it has begun.
It has always been like this, so I care little for what will happen until 2022, when I'm taking the jump.
The best thing about this two year period is how cheap the previous gen games and accessories become, it's gaming heaven.
This. It wasn't until Bloodborne that the PS4 really had anything at all that justified the investment, that wasn't also on previous gen consoles.

And if you want native 4k, 60-120fps, SSD load times and the other bells and whistles of next gen today, then consider investing in a PC. Otherwise there's so many great games this year and upcoming next year, just get stuck in and enjoy them.

I remember feeling like this during parts of the 360/PS3 gen but towards the end we were starting to see some really impressive things wrt bigger environments with more complexity (GTA V) and narrative driven AAA was getting pretty sophisticated (TLOU).

I kinda feel beyond things like further advances in physics interactions, and machine learning + procedural gen to flesh out more details in game worlds that I'm in a fairly satisfied place with where tech is and is heading, particularly looking at things like Flight Sim 2020, and the VR game Boneworks.

One concern I do have is similar to your premise in that Cyberpunk might feel a bit too current gen and not feel like the leap in scope for open worlds that Witcher 3 accomplished. I really want that to be another watershed moment for gaming and I hope the world feels as ambitious and complex as the initial press impressions led us to believe.

I haven't paid any attention to next gen rumours and I've still got tons of games to play on the ps4. Having said that I'll buy the PS5 day one because why not.

I'm the complete opposite, so many great games to play and I'm almost on a mission to finish as many games from this gen as possible so I can leave it all behind. Other than Halo Infinite, I could wait for next gen, wouldn't even mind if they gave us a year between with no releases so I could finish my backlog!

As a primarily PC gamer, I can't relate anymore. My rig probably already spanks whatever the next gen systems hardware will be anyway.

I don't give a shit about graphics. I'm much more interested about vision and actual novelty

And given the current state of affairs its fair to say that video games will remain for the most part utterly boring for another good while. Im honestly sick of arpgs and progression based everything. I'm sick of games which are industry overhyped glorified tech demos (Spiderman), and the amount of overhyped shit in general

Its really weirding me out in every possible way that thinking about it, the most fun I had with a video game was Crackdown 3 this year. I mean that as stupid, immediate, pure fun

Everything else was either flawed, unremarkable, or not based on fun to begin with and to me, its becoming an issue. I don't want to have leveling systems in every single game I playor whatever. I actually wish we'd get more Ruiner / Crackdown and less push on graphics

I feel the same, although probably not for the same reasons.

There are tons of games that I want to play in the first 6 months of 2020 and yet, can't be arsed with buying them knowing that next gen is on the horizon and I am gonna spend probably at least $500 USD because I want to get Scarlett (and probably PS5) on day 1.

So next year for me is probably TLoU Part II, Animal Crossing and whatever other Nintendo game comes out that I'm interested in until Q4 2020.
