I like it, it's a nice little bonus. Every once and awhile I get a cheap indie game or a DLC pack for free. I preferred the old system, though, where you could directly redeem points for digital games. It was like for every 1-2 retails games I'd get a Game Boy game for free.

As someone who buys mostly physical games, it's really good. I have bought a bunch of indie games on sale with the gold coins.

I just wish they would make the redemption period for physical redemption a bit longer. I recently bought quite a few physical game and they were all "expired".
Additionally for my copy of Danganronpa Decadence it doesn't register the game as being the correct region so I don't get coins for that either.

Why am I not surprised that people are complaining about free money?
Making a thread trying to give credit to Nintendo's rewards program than saying people complaining about free money sure is a choice.

Nintendo barely discounts their games and dont even have nearly the best rewards program. They deserve 0 credit for this lol.

People getting angry over a 5% cash back scheme is always funny.

The entitlement level of video game enthusiasts is unparalleled.
Who's getting angry? OP is expecting us to all gather round and praise Nintendo for giving us a very generous 60 cents off their $60 game purchase (or $3 off digital), and we're like "nah".

Like, it's fine, and obviously I'd rather have it that not, but do I think they "need to get more credit for it"? No, not at all.

It's really weird like that for games that installs multiple slots. Robotics;Note, Subnautica and this all do it and I'm not really sure what's causing it.

My biggest issue with the whole thing is why are the lower-tier coins Platinum and the rarer, more valuable coins Gold? Shit should be the other way around. Someone needs to teach Nintendo how precious metal ranking works. This absolutely keeps me up at night.

No, considering I'd save that money if a lot of titles on Switch had decent sales.
At this point people saying Switch titles don't have decent sales is just a meme. Nintendo's games don't have decent sales, but 3rd party games have sales all the time. They're also entirely in charge of their sales and a number of indie games have launch window sales

They expire. Nintendo continues to be awful at anything that doesn't involve making franchise sequels.

It's nice for indie games but I can't say I got a big discount from it. Maybe I needed to purchase more stuff but it would be nicer if NSO accounts got a higher rate of gold points or something to further incentivize subscribers.

It's not much but it does add up and I really like it versus nothing from the competition

It is nice and obviously better than nothing, but I have a hard time seeing why getting like three dollars back (that expires mind you) from a $60 purchase is worth any sort of extra praise or pat on the back.

Well, it's better than nothing. Would be nicer if physical games were also eligible for the 5% rate that digital purchases get. And the weird expiration dates and error messages for redeeming the points from a cartridge are a bummer, some games just don't offer them at all I suppose. Too bad Microsoft or Sony don't offer anything like this where I live, seems like MS Rewards is a decent program.

Because just because something is free doesn't mean it's worthwhile. The Nintendo rewards program is like they've checked a box on services to offer, like most stores and restaurants do. It's so little, has so many caveats and limitations that it's practically worthless. The limitation on the age of the game is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary, for one.

The limitation is obviously there to prevent people from buying 5$ bargain bin games en mass that were sold at 60$ at launch and get gold points for that. Nothing "ridiculous" about that.

Anyway its free money for me, because I get every game a bit cheaper with gold coins earned from the last game.

The system is obviously for rewarding people that buy more than one game a year.

It's nice having a little extra credit to put towards my next purchase. It's not a make or break kinda thing, but it's nice

It's a hell of a lot better than the garbage Sony Rewards program that Sony just killed. Never going to complain about saving a few bucks here and there. Especially when it happens with little to no effort on my part.

I am not a fan of the implementation, so I just ignore them rather than get pissed that my points expired.

The straight 5% back for digital is the most generous of the three if you are spending money

MS wins for giving you points without spending a cent though. Do all the quests and I get enough to cover GPU each month although usually stock up on GPU codes on the rare sale and use my points to buy DLC or hardware.

This system is so lackluster. It would be worth giving them credit if they did other basic customer friendly things, like have meaningful sales.

Those points are only valuable when you buy games from third party sellers that is having a sale. I think Nintendo is hinting to us on where to buy eShop games. Not from the eShop

It's pretty cool but yeah, it's irritating that it expires

I got Luigi's Mansion new and it said the code expired 🤷‍♀️

It doesn't even level out the "Nintendo Tax" on indies, compared to buying them on Steam. I don't care who sets those eShop prices, facts are facts.

And I buy physical releases for most games where 1% in gold coins is fairly insignificant. It's like €0,6 or something.

I file this gold coin system under "better than nothing", but it's hardly praise worthy.

Since I just found out today these coins expire (in only a year, dear lord) I tried to find where it'll tell me how much and when are going to expire. Does anyone know where that is? I bet some of my coins have already left the building without me realizing since I love to hold onto these for a long time… I was going to dump them all onto Neon White but if it's not going to release imminently then I'm a bit screwed.

So, to earn gold points on new retail physical games, you have to redeem your game card within a year of its release. After a year, it's too late to earn those points.

To see when the points you have earned will expire, login in to your My Nintendo account (https://my.nintendo.com/), go to "point summary" and click on the "points expiration" tab.

Considering other console manufacturers don't offer something like this and Microsoft Rewards is not available here, yes. I think it's good. Bought some cheap indie games with it.

The great thing about it is Nintendo actually lets retailers sell codes, so when GameStop sells Xenoblade for $26 you can still get a full $3 back. I love it.
Also this.

I admit my perception is skewed by being someone who plays on switch and pc, but the same title is always cheaper on Steam, there's always a Switch tax. Sometimes I pay it and don't particularly mind it (like for Hades) but there clearly is one.

ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights is currently 25% off from its $25 list price on the eShop (which, for as much as some people like to complain that there aren't enough/good sales, is the only marketplace that currently has it on sale as of this post), and with the gold coins I had in my a wallet, I was able to get it for ~$10.

Sony doesn't offer jack, and while Microsoft's system is cool, it isn't as passive a thing as getting money for games I was going to buy anyway. Yes, it expiring is lame, but I guess since I'm mostly digital on the Switch, I constantly accrue a decent sum of coins in a relatively short period of time.

Microsoft has the same shit for getting points for purchases (which you can trade for money). And actual free money on the form of weekly quests you just need to click a bunch of links and gain points. Or playing games. Or just using the console three times a week. Can't be more "passive" than that.

I'm a GamePass subscriber, so I can't remember the last time I've actually purchased a game on the Xbox, but fair enough.

It's at least something. Doesn't compare favorably to MS Rewards though. If the Rewards program continues as is, I will never have to pay for Game Pass Ultimate with very little effort every day plus a much better monetary reward for Store purchases compared to Gold points. I can even sneak a few vouchers here and there on top.

After about a year I think. But yes they eventually expire. So do your Platinum points as well.
Platinum points is the real ass backwards part of the rewards program. There are Club Nintendo style physical rewards that come out right after your points expire and almost everything else you can spend them on is a JPEG.
