Animal Crossing's launch next year is going to be massive and a main series installment hasn't happened for 8 years. Too melodramatic for my tastes to think a 3 year break is going to crater the Splatoon franchise.

I'm sure they are always prototyping new Splatoon concepts, saying they are not working on Splatoon 3 doesn't really mean anything. When Animal Crossing is finished they will no doubt move to full production on a new Splatoon project.

Can't imagine they'd go "no more content updates and no more Splatfests. Next Splatoon content is out 6 years after the release of Splatoon 2"

Pictured a spin off of sorts coming out in the near future. Guess we'll see
This is my thought. The way it's worded, I feel like a non-multiplayer online shooter game set in the Splatoon universe is what's in the works.

There's no way an IP that's sold 3m Japan alone is just sitting around. Nogami doesn't have to be working on it full-time with Animal Crossing in the works, and it could be something led by younger staff.

Well, back to pushing my ideal spin offs. SRPG Splatoon ala Mario x Rabbids or a full blown rhythm / idol game like Persona dancing or the Miku games.
Alternatively, do we have enough characters / is the series big enough for a warriors spin off yet?

I would prefer an RTS where you control an entire team instead of being one player in a team. That would fill a void in Nintendo's library.

Not sure a Warriors game would fit since most of the weapons are ranged based. Plus I can't imagine integrating the inking mechanics into a warriors game either.

The thing is Nintendo doesn't really make them. They're not big sellers. Using the Splatoon IP to those genres could generate better selling games in an IP many people love.

Isn't Style Savvy a million unit seller? Like the last one probably didn't reach it but that was on the tail end of the 3DS.

I've been right many times before and never rubbed it in people's face though. But that Splatoon 3 discussion seems to inexplicably irritate some of the people who, because they spend their lives on this forum, think that they can police the discussions. Damn right I ain't changing on Splatoon 3; I said fiscal year 2020 and I will stand by that until March 2021. And if it doesn't happen, it means that the Splatoon team has been busy with something else entirely new !!(and no, that is probably NOT Animal Crossing as it's been proven that those are mostly separate teams)
And honestly, I'd take a new IP any day of the week from them, so everybody wins!
I'm not bothered. I just think it's funny. Your avatar and splatoon 3 are forever linked in my brain.

You have never been one of the aggressive ones I'm mentioning. Which is why I answered.
And like Tito Ortiz crushing this pack of apple juice on my avatar, I will crush some people's feeling when next year, Splatoon 3 will be revealed at E3. And if they reveal something else, I'll still probably be happy.

Good. It needs to cook and revamp the entire game. Make a meaningful campaign while you're at it.

Yeah, it's obvious that you're speaking for yourself, I'm saying why do you think that's most of the Fanbase. You made it seem like no one would care about the franchise if they stopped supporting until 3.
Never said nobody would care, over all my posts I mentioned every time that people would stay (especially Japan - similar to Splatoon 1) but nobody can't deny that stopping supporting it won't have negative effects in the long run, just like any other GaaS game would have. In other word, Splatfests are turf wars pure so for people more like you,no? And new weapons,nerfs/bufs/modes for more dedicated player, right? To bad we won't get them anymore, the WHOLE fanbase loses this way.

Why in the world would they not split the team? Splatoon is a huge franchise now that deserves constant development, much like Zelda deserves. AC and Splatoon are for very different demographics too and the games are totally different genres.

So now we either have a long wait for S3 or a short dev cycle meaning most likely just a content release. Splatoon is the best shooter on pure gameplay but it's begging for a lot of modern features like a client/server account system, split screen multiplayer, coop campaign, etc. Imagine a 30 vs 30 BR mode. They needed to be developing this stuff for the last 2 years, not start in 2020.

The dev teams are different.

They're likely working on something, spin off or New IP

Whether Splatoon 3 releases on Switch might depend on when Nintendo decides to release their next gen platform. If it's sooner rather than later then SP3 will be postponed to the next gen.

I could imagine another DLC expansion would come along in the near future but otherwise I expect, as others have said, Smash and MKart levels of sequeling on the same platform.

That balance updates are continuing is good news. They cut off balance updates to splatoon 1 at a very inopportune meta. Eventually they will realize that they have no reason to fear the eliter and squiffer. The conservative buffing of chargers reveals that they have way too many reservations.

i see this as a 1 per console series, unless Nintendo decides to make the Switch last a long time, making it necessary to make a sequel on the same machine.

even then they might not want to make a sequel for now and just wait several years. they're making that with Mario Kart atm despite MK8 being 5 years old and MK itself being one of their top selling series..

The final splatfest will probably feed into the story of the next game anyway. Though kinda surprised it hasn't started yet.

I imagine there won't be a new Splatoon until the Switch's successor. It's rare for Nintendo to do sequels on the same hardware nowadays. They seem to reserve those for story driven games or when an idea has not been thoroughly examined (Galaxy 2).

Isn't the studio big enough to be working on two projects at once? So if Splatoon 3 isn't being developed alongside Animal Crossing, that means they might have something else up their sleeve.

Considering how fast and efficient Nintendo game development is this is find and does not concern me at all. I will look forward to playing Splatoon 3 in 2022

They don't have their own studio. They're a group within EPD. Anyways, someone said the Splatoon team and Animal Crossing team have very little crossover.

So, if the Splatoon team isn't making a new Splatoon game then yeah they could be making a new IP.

Speculation based on point that Nintendo stoped releasing DLCs or Splat Fest means that sequel is coming is wrong,
offcourse that Nintendo in some point will stop supporting any game with DLCs or things like Splat Fest, but that doesnt mean that sequell is coming.

Heres what i wrote on July 6th before Splatoon 3 was deconfirmed:

Ok, Let's try and find a middle ground.
I think we can all agree that the Final Splatfest is teasing something, much like it did for Splatoon 1.

I think we can all agree that they shouldn't/wouldn't cut support so early if there's no new Splatoon game till next gen. Splatoon's producer essentially reconfirmed that support is ending with the final Splatfest.

I think we can all agree that no new entry in a franchise for 6 years is unhealthy.

There seems to be a misconception on the Splatoon team, don't think there's a big overlap with that of the animal Crossing team. They share a producer but Aonuma, for example, works on a ton of games at once.
Ok, so something should come on Switch but there's reasons for and against something like Splatoon 3.
Some propose something as big as Splatoon 3 while others propose something as small as a rhythm game spin off. Let's compromise a bit.

A large scale spin off would compliment Splatoon 2 instead of replacing it, could keep the franchise fresh while experimenting with new ideas for Splatoon 3.
Nintendo doesn't have many shooters so they can use Splatoon for their take on different genres. FPS, looter, Destiny-like, battle Royal, etc

Really don't think Splatoon can go without a major title till the proposed switch 2 launch window Splatoon 3, and a Rhythm game isn't that.
Probably best saved for mobile as well.

They can even use this major spin off to build up the story for Splatoon 3

~~~~~
Not sure if anyone disagrees with anything presented here. Is no new Splatoon game for 6 years healthy? Would the Splatoon team, not working on 3, make a new IP instead of a spin off? Or just twiddle their thumbs for a few years then start on 3?
What kind of spin off should they try and tackle?
