I feel like they barely do, you're pretty much always playing as someone who's not a yakuza or just got thrown out of the yakuza, and you spent the entire game beating up criminals left and right, while making friends across town, helping out the townsfolk.
Yup. I can't actually think of a game that straight up lets you play as a criminal. Maybe Saejima in 4? But even then when you see the ending...

It would be news if a Hollywood actor got caught doing cocaine in the U.S. Come on now.

I can't imagine cops raiding someone's home for doing a few lines.

Even then, if it were just personal use quantities, fuck all would happen to them. They wouldn't be in jail, their media wouldn't be getting pulled and everyone would stop caring in about 5 minutes.

The western site has been updated to remove Pierre Taki and his character from the cast list.

Edit: Here's what it looked like before:

OK

so on the one hand, this is encouraging from a "they're still going to release Judgment in the West" standpoint

on the other hand, they've probably decided to put the effort into making a new character model and hiring a new Japanese voice actor, which is going to delay the game's release for months in all likelihood.

sigh

Yeah. The fact they just took down one profile and not the whole thing is technically "good" (well, good as in the game doesn't seem dead). I'm in no hurry for the game myself since I've played the Japanese version to completion, but I can't help but wonder who they'll get to replace Taki and if they manage to nail the casting. Gonna be so hard to find someone better for the role.

This is all so ridiculous... Why is this considered worse than owning child pornography?

No really, Nobuhiro Watsuki, a mangaka, got caught with child pornography but was only hit with a fine. His work is still being published.

Koichi Sugiyama is a war crime denier? Anti-LGBT? Pffft! I sleep...

But oh, Pierre Taki did a bump? REAL. FUCKING. SHIT.

I feel the same. If they do recast him, I strongly doubt it'll be for the better. Taki was so good as Hamura, and his likeness will be sorely missed. He's one of my favorite characters in the game, and I can already think of several scenes where the lack of Taki's smirk alone is gonna be a huge detriment. I really wish Sega would just settle for removing him from marketing and still leave the game intact, they ought to respect their game a little more. If they patch him out of the Japanese version, I'll be disgusted, especially since he's on the cover of the game, and you can't patch that.

Because child pornography ban has only been in effect since 1997, but because of the writting of said law it was still legal to still retained old material. This only got ratified in 2014, so to the consciousness of many it still seen as a grey period where they don't know how hard of a punishment they should give. It also doesn't help that Wattsuki got a lenient sentence by revealing the identities of other pedophiles. Drugs on the other hand has always been perceive with a negative connotation, and this goes all the way back when the opium war devastated China, with none of the nearby asian countries wanting to repeat the same mistake.

Exactly. That smirk alone is so damn good in certain scenes that I can't see how swapping actors/character models won't change the scenes for the worse. And that's not even getting into how damn good his performance was (in terms of voice acting). As I've mentioned before, I've got the game reinstalled and patched on my PS4 just so I can make sure I don't patch it any further (on the assumption the game gets another patch in the future that changes his character model).

I get why Sega would do this, though I certainly don't agree with it. I guess at least if you have the original Japanese physical release at least you can preserve his inclusion forever (so glad that the RGGS team ships finished/working games, so even unpatched the game is fully playable).

After finishing it, I can't imagine anyone else playing Hamura, he was so good in it.

I didn't even play the game yet but I can already see charisma oozing from this character, just look at that beautiful smug "suck my dick prosecutor-chan" face.

Replacement probably's gonna feel like a downgrade but I'm keeping [mostly] open mind.

If this news has done anything it's made me rediscover Denki Groove again and wonder what would happen if they scrubbed out every musician who has done drugs in history like Japan are now doing with Taki, we'd hardly have much a music industry left hahaha (please god don't let Susumu Hirasawa get found out too). So ridiculous.

Uh, there's nothing from Watsuki published on Shonen Jump, which can't publish anything as it's just a magazine.. the one who publish it is Shueisha, the publisher and company who publish many magazines, books, novels, manga and many other. Hokkaido Arc was always serialized on Jump Square which continues there as Watsuki last work on Shonen Jump was in 2005 with Busou Renkin.

Yeah, that's the exact reason for it. And that the law even if revised still is quite lenient in it's punishment.

Yup. Prices were around 5-6K pre recall. Now they've pretty much sold out everywhere and shooting up to 8-15K yen in price.
There are other asian languages like korean versions, i'd think they'd stick around.
I've read the actor also had a role in Shin Godzilla, are copies of that getting disappeared as well?

The Korean and Chinese versions of the game have also been pulled from sale. Nothing has happened to Shin Godzilla, but it's likely the film will be blacklisted from being broadcast on TV.

Look on the bright side: Since the whole page is still there, it proves that Sega still intends to release the game worldwide despite the controversy.

But then again, Sega also left up the Western page for PSO2 for years before taking it down so... grain of salt.

EDIT: I actually just had a sudden thought: What's the likelihood that Sega still releases the game internationally, and just completely removes all mention of Taki from the credits? That should be a super easy edit.

Taki's character uses his likeness as well, they wouldn't be able to just keep Hamura's appearance as is without crediting Taki in some way

Yea, as the post above mine mentions, SEGA would need to recast, re-record, re-scan, and re-animate the role, not a quick edit at all.

Ah, crap. Was thinking this meant I should jump on just grabbing the Japanese version rather than waiting for the US release for convenience, but that's not happening at those prices.

I just learned that this guy is like a side character or some shit

what the hell sega

Not a side character, the major antagonist.

One thing to note, it seems more and more likely that the delay will happen and if it does...will SEGA keep the plan of digital users having the game available 4 days earlier than physical?

Like when everything appeared to be set, the period wasn't a huge issue (well to some, others weren't pleased with it), but now that this arrest has thrown a wrench in the original plans, I don't think it's a wise move to keep that idea.

trivia: psychedelic mushrooms were actually legal in japan until the early 00's.

I don't care about drugs for my own personal use but I really hate how hard they are on drug use here.

Well Best Buy finally got around to updating the release date to June 25th, lol

Hope it sticks...
