Hey YouTube, how about you hide all the chud grifters, instead of loving them so much you push them harder than anybody else with your algorithm.

Absolutely amazed this even made it to user testing. Whether something was made two weeks ago or two years ago is pretty fuckin' important context for anything related to current events or technology.

Sorry I need to see when and/or how old the video I'm watching it. I hope they don't remove this permanently.

What do you gain by removing dates? I guess it's to better surface older videos for recommendations?

To be fair views is a pretty terrible metric to tell if a video is something you will enjoy or not... but it is good to set expectations accordingly when jumping into one of the sub 500 view videos that have been recommended recently.

Dates though... imagine getting recommended VODs for a GAAS-game you enjoy to watch, impossible to tell which version they're playing without knowing when it was uploaded, but I imagine these will be unpopular and not pushed as often "hopefully". Often dates aren't relevant, for example when you find a new channel and binge old videos, you could instead be fed an old video and find the channel that way. If it helps push old videos to the home section then I'm kinda for it, but they already manage that pretty well and currently my home section has many videos that are 3-8-15 years old that I would consider watching. Not sure how much it would effect my tendency to click a video not knowing how old it is on a glance.

There is no good reason to get rid of the dates.

You don't even have the flimsy "wE wAnT tO pRoTeCt UsErS" excuse they used for getting rid of likes. It's a bad idea with no upside for users.

No views, no upload date... it's like putting someone in a closed room where they never see the sun then taking away the clock.

If YouTube could put all its users into sensory deprivation tanks, they would

Might as well remove the names of the videos and who posted them. Rely everything on the shitty thumb nail. What a dumb fucking thing to even consider.

The majority of the time, the only relevant information for upload date is whether it was this year or not. So, while I would dislike it, I can see the argument for an interface that shows "2024" for all videos uploaded this year and hides the year for anything older than that (unless you dig into video statistics and get the exact date).

Hiding the upload date entirely breaks everything, of course.

They really want the algorithm, the thing only them knows how it works and how to manipulate, to be the only thing that tells you what to watch.

Fucking annoying as shit, I use views all the time to determine wether to watch a video, and dates too, like WTF man.

As always when a site has no competition or competition is impossible, the service can make bad choices (usually for money reasons) because nothing else exists.

No for-profit company should own a resource/tool like YouTube IMO.

There's a case to be made for view count, sure. I get that. But why are we talking about removing upload date?

Even that argument sucks because if I'm looking at a product review, knowing something came out in January and has been reviewed in February versus another video of the same product getting a review in August is more important than just the year. I could be in December looking at something and seeing reviews from January and being biased even though there's been several product revisions since then and everything is improved. Or it could be worse.

I posted this somewhere else barely an hour ago for completely different reasons, but, directly applicable

Google, as a business, functions like those "Free [F2P Game Premium Currency]!" scams.

The goal is to maximize the amount of time you spend looking at advertisements/sponsored content and giving Google your data. To let you efficiently find what you're looking for, if at all, would defeat the purpose.

This is the stupidest shit (unless you're trying to waste my time to get more adverts displayed, because what am I going to do - search on Vimeo?)
Knowing the upload date is vital if you're searching for videos on a subject that changes over time.
Anything on current affairs, sporting events or computer software is going to change depending on how long after the event it is, or what software version it's talking about.

Fuck it, why not delete everything and reduce it to a swipe-for-next interface. The algorithm will know what I'm after, right?

Removing view counts is good in my opinion. For me at least, watching good stuff with low view counts make me feel sad and worried. Too much empathy I guess.

Dates though, that's not good. It's really important when looking up guides, tutorials etc.

Dates being removed would make clickbait even bigger of an issue. So many Youtubers are so bad at giving context for their video that seeing the date is mandatory.

Removing upload date accomplishes what exactly?

I have a massive watch later list that I have sorted by upload date, and regularly have to go through and prune it of irrelevant videos (example: videos about what Biden needs to do to win the election) and several other manually created private playlists that will now be in complete disarray if upload date is removed.

What's next? YouTube experimenting with removing video from videos?

i heard the next youtube update is just videos with no context, no usernames, and a random assortment of comments made on other videos. They'd call it "fluid"

Whenever I go to the front page of youtube these days I usually see 1 very random and out of place video with a low viewer count being recommended to me. I can tell which video is out of place by the low viewer count, I wonder if they are trying to counteract this?

View count is also bad, YouTube keeps trying to give me 59 view count videos sometimes when you search a specific thing. Yeah it's great smaller creators might not noticed, but often it's not about what I actually searched, or the quality is garbage.

Why force the removal features that people find useful? Why not let users customize their experience???

Let me see the result of the Benfica - Sporting match that just happened - oh I have to go through all the times they might have played before? What?

I don't care if I can't see the view count (unless it's my own video obviously), but removing the dates from videos would be horrible.

What the fuck?!?!?! While I can somewhat understand the reasoning behind removing view counts of videos, but I think view counts are useful as is the like/dislike counts. I totally do NOT understand the reasoning behind removing the upload dates of YouTube videos as that is extremely useful.

Removing upload dates is insane, how will you know if the video you're watching is even relevant anymore?

no view, date counts and no comments.

I'm personally fine with hiding the view counts from the feeds and I wouldn't miss the comments at all, but the date is kind of necessary in many circumstances. Like, if I see a video in my feed that says "Airplane crash leaves 100s dead" and I couldn't tell at a glance it was actually from years ago that would really suck.

I guess it's acceptable for views, as long as they still show in Search and on the video itself. Date needs to stay everywhere. I swear most of these A/B tests YouTube do I hope I'm not part of
