Both the prequels and sequels are disappointing/bad in their own ways.

The best, or at least most interesting of the bunch, is probably The Last Jedi, and even that has a lot of problems.

Marvel's secret isn't hard, they actively listen to and address criticisms of their previous movies. People complained the action sucked and was hard to follow, they improved cinematography. People complained about lack of stakes, Marvel dialed it way up. People complained about villains, Marvel hit us with many unique, complex and memorable villains.

Meanwhile with TLJ everyone stuck their head in the sand and dismissed any criticism as "if you dislike TLJ you're an alt-right white supremacists".

Wut? They overcorrected everything TLJ did, and made a much worse product because of it. The whole movie is them frantically dancing and sweating in front of the audience, asking "is it okay now? is it okay now?".

They faced the criticism, didn't ignore it, and made a terrible movie.

Didn't RoS have a first day that could allow for $200m? It's the massive drops from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday that's the cause of the drop in estimation? In which case, how can TLJ be blamed for that. That's WoM in effect.
This. You can probably lay the blame on the relatively soft Thursday/Friday numbers on TLJ/Solo and/or general franchise fatigue, but the day-to-day drops afterwards are absolutely because of the reception and WOM ROS is getting. Had this movie been well received, it would had reached 200m even with a softer Thursday/Friday. The second weekend drop should be interesting.

I love how a $175 million opening and the third biggest opening ever is considered a bomb. I know that's the lowest of the new trilogy, but if I made a film that made that much and was considered a bomb, I'd be very happy to have more bombs like that.

Not really. Star Wars finale being front loaded isn't surprising

I want anyone who says the prequels are better to watch any scene between the main trio in TROS then watch this.

To watch any saber battle in the ST and then come back to this.

I saw them days ago. I stand by my thinking they're better than ROS too

Give me dumb fun with risks and heart over something dark, lifeless and safe any day. That's my summary of this argument, and that's my summary of this week of films too

Hell if you get rid of the dumb part it's my summary of the box office tops: this week's #1 was dull, I've seen it once and that is going to be my limit for it. This week's #3, #4 and #5 I'll have seen a combined total of 8 times because in my opinion I appreciate the life and passion each show; Frozen 2 was impressively better than the first one (which I've also seen a bunch of times) and is currently among my fav Disney animated films ever, Cats I already appreciate more than I ever liked Rocky Horror and the Xmas Eve showing I have planned with friends is the most I've looked forward to something all year, and Knives Out was a tremendously delightful murder mystery that's not only beloved, but shows Rian Johnson is going to continue to be a positive and major name to remember in cinematic history (regardless of what the worst fanbase has to say about that fact)

I'm in the middle of a series rewatch and I saw ROTS in between two viewings of TROS and I truly like ROTS more. Which isn't to say I like the acting more. TROS is the best acted film. But I'm terms of story ROTS benefits from there being a consistent storyteller with a vision. Not the greatest vision, but still a vision.

I really doubt that was actually their focus. It was just Abrams going back to his TFA ideas that TLJ dropped. If addressing the criticisms were an actual focus, there's no way they'd have left the Luke stuff mostly alone.

We'll see. The day-to-day drops already paint a rather grim picture of the reception this movie is getting amongst GA. I can see TROS getting a TLJ-sized drop in its second weekend. If it got a BvS-sized drop... oh boy.

Dark Knight Rises had a bigger opening week than Dark Knight. I might be wrong, but I think the first weekend is mostly on how much people enjoyed the previous movie and are eager to watch the next one.

The quality of the movie itself is better evaluated on the drop-off of the next days/weeks.

Also let's face it: I highly doubt the people ragging on TLJ didn't not see this movie. Why? Because they probably still saw TROS in hopes of it undoing everything TLJ did (which it did). So no, at the end of the day this movie's low box office performance is the result of itself.

For lovers
If Disney wants to get this franchise back on track, they should take a three or more year break from the big screen and then drop a top notch film or two covering Vader's Jedi purge and the Empire bringing everyone to heel between Episodes 3 and 4.

An entire movie or two with the energy of the Rogue One hallway scene. Vader, Jedi fights, single-handed beatdowns of armies, actual interesting planets being visited... people will purchase tickets to watch that.

Nah. They have to go with a setting completely new to the films that doesn't drop 'member berries all over the place.

I honestly believe Old Republic is the ticket. Obviously not straight adaptations of the material that exists for that era but definitely take inspiration from Revan et al.

And to think we could have gotten Wicked doing Showman-type money instead of Cats. At least we got a midnight screening delight on out hands.

As for TROS... enough about it has been said. There were too many factors that affected it to lay the blame on one single thing.

Only if you're sticking your head in the sand. My group went opening night for TFA and TLJ. Not a single person out of a group of 8 has even sent a text concerning TROS. We just moved on.

Obviously, the late drop in tracking was affected by reviews and wom, but the well was already poisoned. Tracking was depressed below TLJ before a single review released.

Knock it off with the gaslighting. We clearly exist.

The Disney movies have been a mixed bag for me but I'm overall positive on their existence. They got me interested in the IP in a way the prequels utterly failed to do.

...we'll see if I feel the same way after seeing 9.

Well, in that case.

Obviously, the late drop in tracking was affected by reviews and wom, but the well was already poisoned. Tracking was depressed below TLJ before a single review released.

If the original tracking of $190m - $200m stuck, you could have an argument for some fatigue and some of the divisiveness of TLJ impacting the film. That is the most that can be said. TLJ was well received overall. This is factual.

Knock it off with the gaslighting. We clearly exist.

You do.

You're also in the minority of people who saw the film.

Yep. RoS starts relatively weak in large parts due to TLJ and it'll stay weak thanks to its own merits, or lack of those.

We've had 4 good to great Star Wars movies and one mediocre one which Is still miles better than the prequels. The Disney acquisition has been a massive positive for Star Wars And I am grateful we got it.
I have no love for Disney as a company but four good Star Wars movies in four years would've been unimaginable to me in 2005. If TFA had been the only good one I would have still been happy. I'm not excusing TROS for being junky but I feel like a lot of fans don't have this perspective. Star Wars was fucking done. We weren't going to get anymore. Literally a single good sequel to Return of the Jedi is more than I ever imagined.

Relativity and context, how does it work.

I'm definitely sticking with lurking the Box Office Theory forums rather than paying any attention to Deadline going forward. They knew Rise was headed toward $170-180 when Deadline kept that $193 statement up almost til the bitter end.

There's no denying this is a considerable drop from TLJ. You know, as a big Star Wars fan I'd be far more bummed at how apparent it is that the franchise needs a few years off to reconfigure if it weren't for all the Disney+ content still to come. But I'm quite satisfied with the prospect of more live action TV Star Wars. So let upper management figure things out and here's hoping the next phase of cinema will be better-received. Star Wars has definitely gone from the franchise to one of the fairly big ones and as someone who really loves Rey, Finn, and Kylo that's a bummer to behold but hey -- them's the breaks sometimes!

I hope D+ still gets some kind of Finn show or something eventually however.

Rises also made more worldwide than Knight even with a horrific shooting.
