This is ResetEra's weekend box office thread. While the OP focuses on the "popular" weekend tallies, we typically discuss box office throughout the week as well when notable films are playing. New threads are posted each Sunday morning.

Isn't it like thirty bucks to view these things on D+? I guess that's a good deal if you've got a whole family and microwavable popcorn. Personally, I'm not even certain I would watch new Star Wars/Trek for that much.

But clearly many disagree!

Wow, BW was super front-loaded throughout the weekend. Friday was half of its weekend gross.

But it was supposed to make $90-110 million at the boxoffice! What a bomb. The Marvel bubble has finally burst!

That Premiere Access number is pretty nice for them, probably enough for them to contemplate using PA for the rest of the year for Marvel movies.

Man those Disney + premiere access numbers are something else. Glad to see Marvel is still bringing people out. Event wise there's nothing quite like a Marvel movie imo

Good opening for a still recovering market but the real story is the insane D+ business it did.

60m on D+ is better for Disney than an extra 100-120m at the box office since they get all of it.

Movie theaters are going to be pissed at that streaming number, they probably see it as stealing their audience, lol.

The story here is those Disney+ numbers truly insane. As mentioned above that is probably better for them revenue wise than the box office number due to no revenue splitting. I am sure the executives are very pleased.

Movies are $18 a ticket here, atleast if you wanna see them on a decent screen. If me and my partner just wanna stay home, the difference is in our favor to just stream it on our OLED with our sound system. Plus not paying like $20 for snacks and stuff.

Would love it if the ability for PA + theatrical to co-exist meant Shang Chi etc went on PA day-and-date.

Also I feel like this is the final nail in the "piracy makes day-and-date untenable" argument.

I think it's more that the PA numbers were significant enough to report this time.

Surely Mulan must have been significant enough (or at least somewhere in the same ballpark as BW's numbers). They just didn't have the box office grosses to go with it to smooth over any disappointing expectations. Difference is with here they can claim they're still on their way to profitabiilty

I feel the same.

Two tickets on a nice screen alone costs more than $30. Factor in Uber, snacks, etc, $30 on Premier is the better deal

Shang chi premiere access announcement by Friday?
I thought they confirmed this already?

Shang Chi is currently set for a theatrical release only, but I can't remember if it was ever going to stream simultaneously or if that was just bad reporting.

Strong opening, but there's signs of weak legs here. I'm guessing $180 million total domestic.

Some strange legs, it was a week ago being projected to do 90 - 110
Then 100 million after Thurs
I think yesterday's projections were 88 million

But still a solid opening

What is the next movie with 100 million plus opening potential?

Legit don't think there will be any until Spider-Man.

If Eternals or Shang Chi makes it, either means COVID situation has improved, or premiere access was an even bigger hit on theatrical gross than we thought but I expect BW benefitted from being the first MCU film in a couple years.

Gotta be Shang Chi because it's the next Marvel movie plus it won't have Premier Access to limit its box office potential.

The draw back for the movie is that the character isn't really well known though so a lot of people expect Ant Man numbers. But it does have a hungry community(AAPI) that's ready to come out in support of it because we see this as finally having our chance at a big budget movie.
