A lot of these aren't really signature weapons, like Daggers and Mage Mashers for Zidane are as generic as whatever was Vaan's initial equipment in FFXII. It definitely wasn't a thing until Buster Sword and Dissidia only renamed stuff that were never associated with a specific character in FFs before VII.

Thread: The original gunblade is definitely the coolest one.

Brotherhood easily. I've always loved how it looks like there's water inside like some kind of lava lamp or something. FFX's water aesthetic is so good.

Off-topic, but I thought Cloud's next sword. the Hardedge, kinda underrated IMO. For something that replaces the iconic Buster Sword, I always loved loved loved getting this after so long.

700

The characters IIRC mean something like a single clean stroke cutting things into two (figuratively about cutting ties; but literally it works well for a sword lol)

Yeah Hardedge always looked cool.

Kanji: 一刀両断 - "cutting into two with a single stroke"

一刀- ONE CUT , 両断 りょうだん - DOUBLE CUT

That's why I said I was taking liberties with some characters (mostly the earlier ones) and using modern appareances lol.

Blazefire Saber for functionality/versatility. Unfortunately, its hard to tell what type of gun it is or the full ballistic capability, especially since Lightning is strong enough to use it with one hand. Besides that, it effectively has an unlimited ammo capacity/doesn't need ammunition. Would be (on paper) a top tier survivalist tool were it actually real.

Brotherhood looks really cool, but functionally not a whole lot happens with it past aesthetics/character relationship stuff in universe. In gameplay its gets a story stat boost eventually, but ehh. Its not really more remarkable than a regular longsword at the end of the day.

Engine Blades/Royal Arms aren't as cool as they could be when Noctis's abilities are actually much cooler - he could access a significant portion of his kit by throwing a ball point pen at enemies.

There's something about WoL's Braveheart that just speaks to me. Honestly I just love almost everything about WoL except for that fact that he's just a blank canvas. He isn't a real character, just a icon. And really I hope he stays that way.
After that is Brotherhood. Cause it's a sword that shimmers like water. Do I even really need to explain?

Oh and... despite me disliking VIII overall...Gunswords are cool. Siefer's is better but Squall's is still cool. Pulling the trigger to heat it and make it vibrate so it cuts cleaner is a neat concept.

I love me some gunblades.

In particular, I'm a HUGE fan of (FFXIV) Heirsbane

One thing I like about gunblades of Garlean-make are that they are actually functional as projectile weapons.
The design (shown) of Gaius van Baelsar's specification would prove so deadly and efficient that it became the template for the standard issue gunblades throughout the VIth, XIIth, and XIVth Imperial Legions.

Buster Sword
Brotherhood

I also really like Fang's standard weapon in FFXIII

How is this thread missing the most iconic Final Fantasy weapon of all?

Honestly Gaius' Gunblade is the best Gunblade in FFXIV, given everything. Seeing it's standard style being used for abilities like Terminus Est actually makes it seem like a viable alternative to the Hrothgrar style Gunblades.

I feel like Illumina or Atma Weapon are more signature Final Fantasy VI weapons.

DAMN that looks good!

I wish I could like FFXIV. I finally started looking into it properly with the update that added gunblades (my favourite of the OP's list). I wanted to see if I could build a really fun gunblade DPS character, maybe focused on agility, attack speed etc, and quickly realized to my dismay that classes in this game pretty much only have one playstyle that they're made for, with practically zero customization and personalization of playstyle, and gunblades are designed for tanking only. Instant turn-off for me when a game does that, especially for a series like this where games like FFV encouraged mixing and matching of jobs and abilities to create your own fun builds and playstyles. "Play specifically how we tell you to play" is not leaning into the strengths of the video game medium imo...

Gunblade is peak FF weapon. It's nonsense, and yet very cool and understated.

FF8 Gunblade had been on my eternal shitlist after the day I learned it didn't actually shoot bullets.

That said I really like Brotherhood and Buster Sword is cheating cause it's also Guts' Dragon Slayer from Berserk.

Buster Sword.

I'd love to see this discussion for Ultimate Weapons too as well. I mean I'd go in with Cloud's Ultima Weapon here too, but just because it is so phenomenal when doing 4x Cut and Omnislash.

Buster Sword and Gunblade Revolver are both iconic but my winner is ultimately the Brotherhood. I just really like water aesthetics.

Brotherhood and most of Zidanes double-bladed thingies are gorgeous.
The Buster Sword and the Gunblade are still iconic, but they've been overdone.
