Group mascots in fast food meals.

Burger-King-Kids-Club-burger-king-39681565-751-517.jpg

Now reduced to a single mascot (McD) or no one (BK),

the fact that most people thought eating ass was weird. you watch gay porn from that era, hardly any ass eating.

Speaking of porn, lengthy shots of crotch. Sometimes appearing in a random fashion.

Von Dutch caps, sweat bands and Rosary beads!

Before streaming sites internet porn was more of an ordeal - find a clip with an interesting description (no thumbnails here) and wait ages for it to download checking now and then to see 2-3 seconds at a time.

Days of dvds made up of celebrity sex tapes, I had one that ranged from the obvious - Paris Hilton, right through to John Fucking Leslie - ex kids tv presenter in England!

On a related note - Paris Hilton in general!

the character "The Todd" from Scrubs

pretty much everything else about that show holds up pretty well, but that character - yikes

he was written as some over ridiculously over top figure and not someone to emulate but put him in a 2018 and there'd be a lot of think pieces written about how problematic he is

That's not dated, that's actually the last good MAC out there, handle in the back, easy to use and none of this "ooh, we have to be a fashion statement!". It was practicality over design and affordable :). And there even was a cheaper version :) for students :).
It was genius.

Yooooooooooooo this is so damn true wow. A lot of characters from that time period wouldn't go today.

Remember Stifler? Man, guys like him in all those 2000s high school/college movies wouldn't dare set foot in 2018. Fuck it was bad.

The 00s were really the lamest, most nondescript decade in living memory. It's telling that despite living through it half th people in here can't tell the difference between what's 90s & what's 00s. It's like, 9/11 happened right off the bat to make everybody stupid and paranoid. Then Hey Ya came out, then the iPhone, and after that meh. Obama got elected, that was huge, but most of his presidency belongs to the following decade.

This decade has been far more meaningful and memorable in terms of an identity and societal change - the social justice revolution, the explosion of social media altering society and human self image, huge advances in LGBTQ rights, Obama & Trump, nazi riots, the reemergence of Russia, the death spiral of broadcast TV & radio, superhero movies, the global explosion of Asian culture, human genome mapping, deep learning, crypto-currency, self-driving cars on the road, private space flight...it's not even close.

People complaining about their "soul-crushing" office jobs that paid a living wage, and thinking that we'd conquered racism.

I'd take iPods and Blockbuster Video over what we have nowadays easily! I love my iPod and still use it daily, it's great! I don't even know what people are using nowadays, thankfully mine still works.

Die Another Day. It's hard to describe but visually it went for this very "new, very clean" look with many of the effects and sets but ended up looking dated because of it.

I always wonder how the world would have been if 9/11 never happened.

Weeks before 9/11 the Bush Admin was making a hard push to end racial profiling in airports. I remember that because I was really surprised that John Ashcroft would support such a thing, given his reputation. Then 9/11 happened and we went full paranoid.

Sweatpants with words on the butt (hot, princess, etc.)
Those belts that had the digital buckle with words and shit.
I don't know if this was only a trend for black girls but I remember when girls would wear pacifiers???

And finally these:

Yeah, I can't really distinguish between the late 90s and early 00s myself. Like when were calling cards around, or paying ridiculous landline charges, or phone modems, or pagers for non-emergency personnel.

Also, at least in my household, watching live TV. DVRs made time shifting too easy.
