Yakuza 0!

Why no Yakuza representation, huh? Gravity Rush 1 and 2 as well?
Nier: Automata as well? Would The Evil Within 2 count as well?

EDIT: And Prey and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Of the list in the OP, it's Witcher, but some people say the Soulsborne games are open world. I don't think they are, but if they count, it's Bloodborne.

i wonder if posting this poll a few weeks after RDR2 release has anything to do with the results? Probably not! Carry on!

You know that we all know the answer to that.

The Witcher 3, loved every single square meter of it. :) I don't know why, but beyond it's beauty RDR2's world just doesn't click with me.

nah i think open world games need to have an element of sandbox that the soulsborne games dont really have

theyre closer to a 3d metroidvania than an open world (they arent that, but theyre closer to that than an open world game)

The Witcher 3 is the best of the traditional mould.

FH4/3 and MGSV all do something new and interesting.

Breath of the Wild is simply the best game of all time.

Soulsborne is wide linear.
Right, then yeah, Witcher 3.

RDR2 has the most beautiful and cohesive open world ever, BotW has the best world in terms of being explorative, MGSV has the best mechanical game design within an open world, but The Witcher 3 is the best game ever made that takes place within an open world.

Zelda BOTW, Red Dead and Witcher 3 are all pretty close, but I'd go in that order. Really I'm just very excited about the future of games right now, and want to give thanks to all these studios and developers for being awesome and pushing the medium forward.

Just the Open World is Red Dead Redemption 2 easy, but as a game, for me is Metal Gear Solid V,followed by The Witcher 3.

Disclaimer: Of the games listed, I have only played MGSV, FFXV, Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild. And I haven't yet finished Breath of the Wild, but I do have 90+ hours on it and I've completed two out of the four beast quests. I feel comfortable ranking it versus these other three titles.

In terms of the open world itself, I'd say it's BOTW > FFXV > HZD > MGSV.

In terms of the available gameplay mechanics within that world, I'd go with MGSV > BOTW > HZD > FFXV.

And as for my opinion of the overall game? BOTW > HZD > FFXV > MGSV.

I chose Horizon ZD. It's my favorite game overall out of all of these even if the open world wasn't necessarily critical for the game to work, nor was it the best designed open world (although it's the best looking imo).

Glad you are enjoying BotW! I remember you being pretty excited for it and the Switch a few months ago haha.

In my opinion, the conversation starts and ends with BotW. Hands down.

Nothing else has come close to touching it in my eyes.

Yeah! I'm probably gonna make an LTTP once I'm finally finished with it. I guess I've already spoiled my opinion though. :P
Still eager to hear your thoughts in full haha. Glad you're enjoying it, hope you continue to!
Also, if you haven't already, try going to the southeastern coast of the map, and look out over the sea to see if something catches your eye.

Well, if we were to rank them (just the ones I've played), I guess it would go something like this:

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
Assassin's Creed: Unity
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Assassin's Creed: Origins
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
inFamous: Second Son

This is soemthing I'd rather wait on given how recent Assassins Creed and Red Redemption 2 were. If I had to choose though, I'd say

1st. RDR2. Its by far the most alive a open world has felt and it's the only one I can think of that I consistantly and frequently came across new things despite how incredibly long it is. It's not perfect overall as a game, but as an open world game its quite the achievement.

2nd. Breath of the Wild. Its the best at being a sandbox and feeling of exploration, but it has some glaring issues with its weak main quest outside of Hyrule Castle and mixed world design with stuff like shrines not being integrated into the world itself.

3rd. Witcher 3. Its the best at bring characters to life and telling a story, but the world itself is quite flat and overall static. The only reason it doesn't feel completely dead is due to the sheer amount of content.

4th. Watch Dogs 2. Its not the best at anything, but it's just overall really good.

5th. Metal Gear Solid V. It has by far the best gameplay of an open world, but it's also a poor Metal Gear game and is blatantly unfinished.

I'll just go with a game that has an open world that is my favorite. Because then I have to think about too many other factors.

1. Witcher 3
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. Breath of the Wild
