Jenny I guess and Bubba

And what made them more "liberal" characters than Forrest?

Forrest and Jenny were established as good characters in the beginning.
The difference between two characters is actually that Forresr grew with a mother who loves him and helped him as much as possible, while Jenny suffered a childhood with an abusing father.

How anyone could interpret it as conservatives vs. liberals is plain beyond me. Or how the movie somehow is trying to claim that Jenny deserves what she gets and not that she is a victim of things are way beyond her own responsibility.

I have hated it since I first seen it in 1995. That it won the Oscar over Shawshank and Pulp Fiction is nothing short of scandalous.

Anecdotal and all but while I have seen plenty of hate for FG, I have never seen anyone say a bad word about Shawshank.

It's a good all round film.

No amount of woke reality-warping histrionics will change that.

Yeah, it's steeped in nostalgic quintessential Americana.

Fuck baby boomers though

I think it's natural for good movies like Forrest Gump to get kick back for being too successful. I think Frozen is a great film. I hate that movie with every fiber of my being due to how often I've been forced to watch it.

It's actually a pretty scathing critique on the American condition. The book even more so.

https://aux.avclub.com/adapting-forrest-gump-turned-a-caustic-satire-into-a-se-1798252254

I recommend listening to the Canon podcast discussion of it (if you can stomach Devin Faraci).

The story of its production and adaptation is amazing. The author felt ripped off by the deal and hated the film but had pre-sold the film rights to the sequel before writing it.

That novel, Gump & Co, opens with the line "never let anyone make a movie of your life" and then proceeds to tell the story of Gump being responsible for a series of disasters including a power plant explosion, crashing an oil tanker, inventing new Coke and getting involved with Iran Contra. He also meets Tom Hanks and is haunted by Jenny's ghost. To date, the film has not been made.

Well Jenny was a part of the hippie movement, allied to the black panthers, and a girl unafraid of her sexuality. Out of everyone in the movie, besides his family and maybe Lt.Dan/Bubba, treats him like a decent regular human being despite his disability. Bubba simply on the basis pod the fact he's the only minority character given any decent screen time excluding the maid.

I'm in the minority that prefers the book. I read it when it came out and loved it and was subsequently disappointed by the movie. It took what was essentially a black comedy and transformed it into some overly sentimental, feel-good pap.

If you hate the movie you are being an edge lord tbh. There's absolutely no reason to hate it.

Hate's a strong word, I don't think people hate it at all, just many think it's overrated? I think it's a very good movie, but shouldn't have won best picture over Pulp Fiction or Shawshank. Hanks was fantastic though.

I'd kill to have another year that put out 3 movies that good in one year. All 3 could win best picture.

I've hated the movie since it came out. I can't stand the characters and I thought it was boring.

It's a baby boomer jerk off session celebrating their garbage culture and American conservatism which is the worst thing to ever happen.

I hate "rah rah America!" movies, and I hate how this won over Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction... but....

The movie won me over on subsequent rewatches. The "hurray for America" stuff still bugs me, and I still think Shawshank should've won best picture, but I am a firm Forrest Gump supporter. Tom Hanks won me over (again).

I'd kill to have another year that put out 3 movies that good in one year. All 3 could win best picture.
Agreed. What a year.

Just pure hokey. I never enjoyed it, and the added context as mentioned many times ITT (BBs) makes it even worse.

Dumb Boomer conservative propaganda that rewards the idiot character who only does what he's told yet condemns the character who breaks the status quo and gives her AIDS. "Trash" "garbage" "dogshit" "cringeworthy" crap.

So...if a hippy dies...it's immediately conservative propaganda? Does every story need to have liberals succeed to be good?

I'm a liberal, yet I don't give a shit about this.

There's nothing even suggesting that Jenny is a liberal. She's just a free spirit hippy.

I'm looking forward to your generation's jerk off session.

Yeah that's called Ready Player One which caught way more shit for its garbage politics then Forrest Gump ever did or will.

We cant reminisce about our Vietnam because it's never gonna end. We cant even get any good movies out of it. Were also too saddled with debt and being crushed under late capitalism for anything to wax nostalgic about history wise. Wonder whose fault that is

Forrest Gump is wistfully reminiscing about a generation and way of thought that had everything laid out for them and all the socialist security nets they hate so much that they used to bounce off of and then immediately destroy every last one of them because they were too racist.

since *some* people are edgelords.

I've noticed this trend on forums and even sports radio, where its cool to hate on things that are widely considered to be classics. Shit there was a thread here the other day someone was shitting all over Jaws.

Interesting how some keep complaining about the Murica masturbation, while others point out parts that were clearly critical of America at the time.

This is the issue with reading too much into things. Everything that happens has to be some grand commentary on something.

Or... you're just more sensitive to these opinions because they're rarer? Doesn't mean it's "cool" to hate, which is always a pretty strange assessment considering there has always been/will always bee a minority of people who hate a popular thing for legitimate reasons.

I've seen it too many times. On TV as kid. Watched it at summer camp as a kid. On TV in highschool. Watched and was actually quizzed on it in High School. GF made me watch it in college.

I'm done with it. Beyond just the boomer circlejerk aspect I've just seen it too many damn times.

Don't be such an edgelord.

There is plenty of reason to hate it, tastes differ.
I think the worst thing that I could see someone complaining about it that A) it's not realistic B) it's too sappy/sentimental.

This is the first I've heard comments about how it's conservative baby boomer jerkoff material. Most people just watch the film and think "that's really cool he was involved with so many incidents." Also I find it kind of disheartening that we are calling the main character an idiot and a bunch of other things. Forrest is almost mentally disabled, and it's not a good look to insult his intelligence.

Still doesn't make your original comment any less ironic, which was my point.

Personally I think it's poorly acted and written, too. And that includes Hank's OTT turn and absurd characterization.

Outside of some hate on IMDb back in the day, about Forrest Gump robbing The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction of a potential Oscar or two, I haven't heard much else. It is a highly enjoyable movie even if it is not as good as Shawshank or Pulp Fiction.

I've disliked it since I first saw it.

Its an incredibly USA centric movie that glorifies a particular generation and time period in a way that is massively dishonest. It also Has some extremely unpleasant themes around his long time girlfriend that don't make for good re-watching.

It's a celebration of ignorance and USA jingoism.

I really like the film. The right wing reaching is embarrassing, it's just a goofy film and people have projected onto it their own politics.

I also love Pulp Fiction and Shawshank is a favourite of mine. Couldn't give a single fuck about who wins at the Oscars (or any awards) to be honest.

My god it's so shallow. At a certain point it's like a broken record repeating the same type of event over and over until it just ends with the kid. And so motherfucking long. Wasn't it like 2 hours or so? I'd forgive it if it wasn't so damn repetitive. A fucking 2 hour hallmark special.

That's not to say the movie on its own is fucking garbage or worthless, it's just overrated IMO.

I enjoyed it when I was a dumb teen and then rewatched years later... Boy did it not hold up as well. I mean the politics might not help but I wasn't thinking about that when I rewatched it.

I do like the movie, but it's annoying being from Alabama given that it was basically an annual tradition to watch it at school. So it wore out its welcome pretty quickly.

Not to mention the conservative slant (or both-sidesism at best) it has.

It will be hilarious because he will be talking about how Gen Z v2 or whatever is ruining everything, while Gen Z says Millennials ruined the country and all of their media is self masturbatory problematic garbage.

Funny, I don't see anyone saying that about Gen X'ers. I don't recall Boomers saying the Silent Generation ruined everything (no, they're too busy bitching about Millennials instead).

Boomers getting hate because they deserve hate.
