I believe the old ones work fine. The new ones have a wider fov/range and I think they also are not susceptible to tracking errors anymore when you have reflective surfaces in the room like a mirror.
That's great for you, and sucks for us that ordered seconds after the thing went live and still got backordered lol. How does that even happen?
Mine changed from 7-9 weeks to 6-8 weeks to 3-5 weeks. Ordered asap on Steam (Germany).
God I hope so. It seems almost everyone who ordered the Headset+Controller combo got the "after 8 week" shipping timeframe, no matter when they ordered.
Could be a regional thing, like some regions had more stock than others, or that they're still combing through orders. Doesn't seem it was fully automated.
I'm in the UK so maybe we just got shafted on stock.
Like I say though, some people are clearly ones who pressed the button after me yet aren't on back order, despite also being in Europe. That's the part I'm not getting.
Are the orders that are switching to processing/shipped for the full kits? Or are there people who just ordered the controllers also getting status changes? I also placed an order (just for the controllers) mere seconds after the the floodgates were opened and I'm still at the 2-4 week state as of now.

I got it in my cart pretty much as soon as they were available but I ran into the shipping info issue. I tried again on the website rather than the launcher an hour later and got the shipping and payment info entered.
My Index VR Kit is shipping soon now. I added to my cart the split second that it went up, but couldn't get past the shippping information until about an hour later.
