Yeah, Discord discussion is getting nothing done here. There's already a large Discord server from the first time this community was literally brigaded off the site; it's "great" but I pay zero attention to it because discussion moves lightning fast and it has none of the positives that a forum does.
I mean, this is basically what all US political threads outside of PoliEra are. A bunch of bad faith, too online rose twitter posters yelling that Biden is a fake progressive that's done nothing, things would be exactly the same if Trump won reelection instead, but if Bernie won we'd magically be living in some sort of socialist utopia fantasy land.
Please stop saying nice things about TheHunter before the praise starts going to his head.
Just to add I'd agree with this. The discord community is fun and can be great at times but it's not ideal for an actual substantive discussion if there's too much activity (like a major event occurring) where things get lost easily.

To be fair, US democrats are definitely a distinct left party relative to republicans, while Labour under the new guy truly is Tory lite.
So while I roll my eyes at rose twitter esque posters in OT saying Biden is the same as Trump, I don't with my UK era friends. They really have no strong left to rally behind.
As a trans person, I would have a *really* hard time drumming up energy to support Starmer over the Conservatives. Biden was never my first choice, but he's proven to be a better President than I thought he would be. I didn't think he'd be able to get Mitch McConnell to work with him on *anything* for example and well, he proved me wrong.

I asked him directly once and he said the sign read "This is not going to be a normal election cycle" or something. It's possible he was saying that before Roe because of Jan 6 and other Trump stuff. Essentially saying that the GOP as a whole is so unpopular and so incapable of moderating that historical trends wouldn't exactly apply. From that perspective, Dobbs was more of a symptom of exactly that GOP problem than it was the cause of the sign tapping.
Although the GOP narrowly took the House, the Dem wins in purple state Senate & statewide races pretty much proved him right as regards the midterms. And I think it's fair to say there has never in U.S. history been a Presidential election like the one we're barreling towards next year.
The PoliOT is at, maybe, a tenth the traffic and posting output, of that era, though. Feels pretty intentional with the long view.

A lot of people did and haven't looked back. This thread had a mini-resurgence, but if there hadn't been a forced exodus, it would be even more vibrant.
I agree. I check it during events like debates and arrests, but most of my time is spent in the FF14 channel. Discord is great, but it's not conducive to longform.
Ya, it was pretty much a new thread (20,000 posts) every month. Currently it's on track for once a year.
UK labour doesn't inspire confidence sure, and biden is absolutely outflanking them on the left. But they still arent the same as the Tories, and the Tories are still absolutely worse, that gets lost quite often in that thread and often conversations about why labour might be doing that ends up with the same bad faith "you don't care about people struggling" that you see in OT.
I think it's a mixture of the UK being quite conservative and the voting system allowing 43% of the votes to net you 56% of seats in parliament.
But I digress. I can understand being critical but there has been a loss on perspective of the state the UK is in, the demographics and what it means to move forward there.

oh yes era has definitely died down since the heyday. Though I would attribute at least some of that to Trump being president and people needing to bitch every day. Hopefully things pick up when elections get closer.

Without then showing exactly what the differences are between the Max version and the TV version, it could be CNN+ 2.0. Wasn't the reason CNN+ failed because they couldn't offer parity due to contract terms with cable providers?
To be fair, you get that when Trump is president and there's a scandal every other week. (the type that other presidents would have once every 8 years)
When the elections turn out well, this place has great vibes. When it doesn't (like in 2016), the vibes get really toxic, FAST. This thread is (in theory) a quieter place where regardless of outcome there can be level headed discussion.

I remember in 2020 when Biden started losing states right away. OT went doomer very quickly so I mostly stayed in here for the more level-headed takes. The level-headed takes were correct.

Sucks that we're here again with a pillar of this community getting perma'ed. I went through that other thread yesterday and didn't really understand why. Hopefully they reconsider their decision, but either way I just want to thank TheHunter and everyone else who posts here for making this thread a good place to read about politics.

Plus as others mentioned, discord moves way too fast. As a participant, it's pretty much impossible to participate in a discussion that's more than a few hours old. It's good for quick commentary on live events, but having a thoughtful tangential discussion over a day or two is pretty much impossible. Whereas this type of message board allows for multiple conversations / discussions to go on simultaneously at different speeds while still being mostly coherent to follow. And since it's a message board and not a chat room, you don't have to wad through two people flooding things with random irrelevant chit-chat like with discord.
We've tried the whole exodus to discord before with meager results. I'm more interested in getting things working here.
Can someone from the admin team address the topic at hand and chime in with what realistic path forward we could have to get the hunter back? Understand their is previous offenses but there has to be a middle ground on this.

It's not that this particular infraction was that serious (even if we assume said infraction wasn't total BS, which it was), it's that he had racked up several similar bans. TheHunter's one flaw is that, while he was fighting the good fight on Etc, he couldn't help himself from continuing to engage bad faith brocialists who have the mods on their side.
He unfortunately was going to get perma'd sooner or later under this pattern. Especially since things have only gotten worse in recent years - the Tara Reade shit provided a blueprint for these posters to game the system and bait people like TheHunter into bans.
