People realize that we are talking about fuckin Spiderman with a marvel logo slapped on it ? It's not because is an esclusive (and being basically one of the most recognized worldwide superhero it could just sell x2 or x3 more if wasnt but that is completely another story) it's not just and only because the game have good reviews (the game look and play great !!!) unlike TR.
Most of it is because is spidy....
TR having an hard time because fight against Spiderman? Was easy to imagine this lot months before they arrived on the market
In what dream I was laughing ? I asked at one user what was thinking about Spiderman and TR sales in the long run ...not even first month sales (but was a legit question ....not a joke)If it was so easy to imagine why were you laughing and asking if people really thought Spider-Man was gonna end up outselling Tomb Raider?
So pray tell what happened to:
- Spider-Man PS1/N64
- Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
- Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
- Spider-Man 2
- Ultimate Spider-Man
- etc
Because they sure didn't light up the sales charts.
Has every Spider-man game before the new one had this much hype and momentum before? The brand is but one bullet-point:
- Insomniac is one of the most respected in the industry. It's like a Naughty dog or Rockstar game, it's gonna inspire a heightened level of attention because lots of gamers are fans of those developers
- Exclusive to Sony means built from the ground-up to take advantage of the PS4, and it's on a platform with a circa 80m install base
- Marvel/MCU is HOT right now, which further fuels the hype. This is the first time we've gotten a new Spider-man game since the character has come(back) into the spotlight with Civil War, Homecoming, and Infinity War.
- We have the hardware capabilities to do the character more justice than ever before.
If it was just another Spider-man multiplat game by Activision in the Shattered Dimensions/Edge of Time vein, it wouldn't be getting nearly this much love. It would be like 'cool, another Spider-man game'. Clearly this is something more.
I mean, even though it was multiplat, I'm sure the Arkham games benefited from running concurrently with the Bale Batman movies.
I don't particularly disagree with you on those points about her personality, she was a strong-willed woman for sure and I don't like the new Lara's personality either. But you can't separate that from her design and treatment in the games, and it taints what could be a much better character.Old Lara was and had:
-Disowned by her family for following her dreams but didn't let it get to her
-Got all her riches on her own
-Never once complained about Tomb Raiding or adventures
-Strong and fearsome to her enemies
-Had a much adventurous and stronger personality
Compared to this Lara she was much better than this one. All this Lara is doing is just following her parents lagecy and expectations, complaining and whining all the time. The only thing she has over old Lara is her more realistic look but apart from that she is a really bad character and not someone anyone can look up to (unlike old Lara who was loved by most women I know).
Yeah, Avengers became Square's priority. Too big of an IP not to. Plus, I think they're trying to be more efficient with budget, so Tomb Raider was a better fit for Canada instead of Redwood City. I was a bit worried at first, but clearly they did a great job.I still find it so crazy that the finale to Crystal Dynamics' trilogy was outsourced to Eidos Montreal.
I know they're a talented team but it just feels wrong. Shouldn't the studio that started it be the one ending the trilogy?
That post was obvious sarcasm making fun of TruthofKayle's post on previous page.
I agree with you on her looks.don't particularly disagree with you on those points about her personality, she was a strong-willed woman for sure and I don't like the new Lara's personality either. Hopefully, moving forward, now that the origin story is done, future Tomb Raider games can feature a Lara that closely resembles the old one in personality.

Yes, it was funny because just after asking that question I saw the thread on GTA V's fifth anniversary, and then I thought: "well, nothing's going to beat THAT".GTA V was released in September [and it sold 11M in its first 24hrs worldwide].
Deus Ex gone to the pasture
Thief gone to the pasture
now Tomb Raider will be gone to the pasture
Just Cause next
Hi Benji, how did you think DQXI will perform in the US? The UK numbers aren't really good...And made before the UK charts ever dropped

This remind me, this new Hitman will have episodes too?
Thank god. Never being a fan of episode like the previous. No it's a regular game. It has 2 new levels that will ship as DLC later on but all 6 are on disc at once.

Apparently Crystal provided guidance, but it's been said that this is an Eidos Montreal title at its core. Maybe they didn't have a choice either, it's Square Enix calling the shots here, most likely. Frankly, maybe it was for the best. Despite the usual issues with the reboot games still being present in Shadow, I think the liberties Eidos took were very much welcome.Oh yeah. I can't wait to play it. I'm sure they did great. I'm just Crystal Dynamics didn't stick with their own series. Could you imagine if Uncharted 3 was made by a different dev.

Well, curious example, given that it was made by a different Naughty Dog team than U2 and TLOU (but with the same director as in 1 and 2)Oh yeah. I can't wait to play it. I'm sure they did great. I'm just Crystal Dynamics didn't stick with their own series. Could you imagine if Uncharted 3 was made by a different dev.
Since some of you are saying that these numbers are meaningless without digital. It's not as if we don't have the industry average for digital ratio - something like Tomb Raider is not going to be an outlier, given that it doesn't have a major MP or co-op component. If we peg it at 15% ( 2013 ), 25% ( 2015 ) and 50% ( 2018 ) respectively -
This is how the sales look like:
It's not that flattering of a picture. At best, you could say that it managed to hold onto ROTR's sales at a per platform perspective, but it's definitely a decline from how TR2013 performed, and considering factors like install base growth now vs 2015, and other factors, the IP has stagnated.
Whatever gives you that idea? It's not like Core had any issues porting Fighting Force to the N64.
We know an N64 version of TR1 was planned. But it disappeared right around the time Sony gained exclusivity. Tomb Raider used Red Book for all music and dialogue. That's why the game is so bloated. Tomb Raider for the N-Gage is 8MB. Fighting Force for the N64 was 16MB. Eidos could have easily afforded a decent N64 port of the game, and it would have sold decently.

So, is it the end of the reboot series? Not even asking because of the sales, but I see it being market as the end of the reboot trilogy. So... they are going to make new ones or keep it low until another reboot?

I think this is the end of the 2013 triology. Nothing about sales, but this could or will impact the future of the franchise. So, is it the end of the reboot series? Don't you work on the States? Scary that you're predicting stuff correctly over EU :p Maybe the markets are very alike.
UK and US markets are very similar. They each have their own things that make them unique of course but by and large if one thing is true in the US gaming market it's true of the UK market and vice versa
Notable exceptions? I'm thinking games like Madden, but curious if you've noticed anything less obvious. :)
Every once in a while theres a random fluke. SIEGE for example launched pretty soft in the UK while doing around 1 million opening NPD in the US with digital
But yeah it's rare to see a difference like that. Usually the 2 markets are about as similar as 2 different countries could be
Hopefully, moving forward, now that the origin story is done, future Tomb Raider games can feature a Lara that closely resembles the old one in personality.
We are running in circles with this. In this thread alone, I feel like this has been discussed several times. It's not even the quality of the games that seems to be the biggest detriment to the sales anyway. But regardless, why can't this iteration of Lara be a flawed person? I don't understand what's the obsession of holding her to some cartoony standard of being a borderline superhero, when she's clearly part of a different canon. You and others like it less. Thats OK, but lets not forget that the reason why the reboot exists is because the classic TR formula got worn down and sales collapsed.

Woah, when did it get to 50%? Can I get a source?Since some of you are saying that these numbers are meaningless without digital.
