Days Gone feels like any other average Ubisoft game and those always sells. On top of that adding zombies also sells copies. It's like the perfect recipe for selling video games.

They all launched on a friday:
Days Gone: ~70k
Resident Evil 2 Remake: ~70k
Kingdom Hearts 3: ~66k
The Division 2: ~55k
Anthem: ~42k
Sekiro: ~30k
DMC5: ~21k
Crackdown 3: ~4k

Wow, isn't that not good for a huge game like The Division 2? Has Ubisoft commented on their overall global numbers for that game?

"note: digital sales are not included, and download sales have improved significantly over the last four years"

I don't really see the point of sales numbers that don't include digital these days.

Quantifying the state of the physical market has value. The article is just stating that Days Gone (70k) beat MK 11 (40k) in physical sales, which is a valid comparison.

Reviewers: Wait for a sale
PS4 owners: No
Lmao. My son went from World War Z to this with no complaints. Both games not really reviewing well.

I already planned to get it day 1 regardless.

I always play a game before I decide if it's good to me or not. This is one of those times it's good to me despite reviews. I also want to get Crackdown 3, so what the hell do I know, lol.

Impressive that Days Gone beating MK11 despite it being an exclusive.

I'm happy for Bend, the game night not be amazing, but I hope it sells well enough to keep Sony happy. They seem like a studio who could be great in a number of years.

Quality wins. I love that a great single player game without garbage microtransactions outsells a grindy, predatory WB game.

Congratulations to Bend for making a fun, beautiful and atmospheric game.

Amazing and unexpected result for Days Gone! I'm really surprised it beat MK 11.
This is great news as I am really enjoying the game so far, it appeals to my gaming tastes a lot.

Also the MK11 split towards PS4 is absurd.

a multiplatform fighting game will always favor PS4 and that's the current FGC platform of choice.

Sony games launch week in the UK, physical only of course. Horizon Zero Dawn remains the best new IP launch, although 2 years later Days Gone has without a doubt a bigger digital share.

Uncharted 4 - 192k (TUE)
Spider-Man - 190k (FRI)
Horizon Zero Dawn - 114k (WED)
God of War - 96k (FRI)
Uncharted The Lost Legacy - 80k (WED)
GT Sport - 74k (WED)
Days Gone - 70k (FRI)
inFamous Second Son - 70k (FRI)
Bloodborne - 43k (WED)
The Order 1886 - 39k (FRI)
Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection - 39k (WED)
Ratchet & Clank - 38k (FRI)
Detroit Become Human - 22k (FRI)
Seeing this, God of War even seems rather low. Were people hesitant of the new direction? Reviews were out at time time or not?

God of War had a way bigger launch than any previous entry in the franchise. So it's more that Spider-Man and Uncharted 4 had an insanely good launch and Horizon had two more days in it's first week.

I agree with both your points made but that 71% split still seemed really high.
But perhaps most fighting games split that way overall so I shouldn't be as surprised.

Edit: Wander_ thanks for that extra info, didn't know switch version was not out

I voted Days Gone and then changed it to Mortal Kombat because I thought these charts were now including digital sales. I reckon MK11 PS4, Xbone, PC physical & digital would be #1 if it were all accounted for in these positions.

If you think that's not good, take a look at Anthem, which was way bigger and way more expensive :P

Do we know the development budgets of either game? While I'm sure Anthem was a huge project with hundreds of developers working on it at its peak, I doubt TD2 was any slouch in that department.

Yeah that's for sure. But Anthem was a well documented disaster critically. I'm surprised The Division 2 isn't a big hit based on its reception from both critics and fans.

Personally I think people are feeling a bit saturated with these always-online 'Play us forever' type-games. People only have so much free time, and once they're invested in one game or series I reckon it's very hard to prise them away from that and get them invested in another for any significant duration.

Open World fatigue was also a common "argument" against DG.........

Ironically, outside of the Era bubble I'm willing to bet that it being open world and having zombies was a positive as far as most casual gamers go.

Seeing this, God of War even seems rather low. Were people hesitant of the new direction? Reviews were out at time time or not?

I recall it selling about 1/3 better than the previous series best in GoW3. It's never been an especially strong series here, and after all the acclaim of this one I'm willing to bet that GoW2 will open significantly higher.

Shows you don't have to make an amazing game for it to sell well. Congrats bend!

I've got a lot of love for Bend so I'm very happy for them. They would have gained a lot of experience from this project and I look forward to seeing what else they can bring to the table in future, but selfishly I hope it doesn't mean sequel.

Having. A triple bill commercial for gow, Spiderman and days gone before endgame couldn't have hurt.

Not surprising, any average to good exclusive Sony game will sell well at this point.

Ironically, outside of the Era bubble I'm willing to bet that it being open world and having zombies was a positive as far as most casual gamers go.

I swear, sometimes I read these speculative threads and just think to myself "Oh boy, do these people are in for a surprise....".

Always use my "casual" co-workers as a measuring stick. They own PS4s but don't play much, only buy like 2-3 games a year (mostly FIFA, CoD plus X). They don't read reviews, post on forums and basically get all their gaming news from mainstream media coverage (like tabloid magazines that have one tiny gaming article per issue).
When they talk about an upcoming game, I know it's gonna sell like bonkers.

It's a bullshit metric, but they were super hyped about Wildlands or Spiderman (games that were picked to struggle by a large part of ERA) for example. OTH they probably think "Persona" or "Bloodborne" are bands or TV shows.

Too many posters on ERA (tbf I often agree with them over the mass market) just assume that everyone reads reviews, watches streams and follows gaming news, then act super surprised that the mass market reacts differently than expected.

Let's face it "Zombie hordes, bike, open world" is an amazing elevator pitch to the masses.
