Dang, there's more?

Someone need to make a list of these connections. I'm a big fan of this stuff, but I'm only familiar with the NMH titles.

Finding tenuous and explicit connections between Suda games has been an element of his fanbase for as long as he's been including them... So basically since Moonlight Syndrome I think. It's a deep and twisty rabbit hole that includes manga and supplemental material and it's super confusing to keep track of everything but the wider speculation is part of what keeps people coming back to his work.

Travis Strikes Again is like a love letter to those fans.

Emir is in both endings regardless. He simply has a less fortunate fate in the true ending.

The true nature of the Death Drive basically allows them to write around that (actually a couple different ways).

Either wished back by the Death Balls or Emir was cloned by the CIA before he died

Basically any possibility is on the table for NMH3.

Or look at Kamui or Sumio. Clearly the Sudaverse doesn't work on the same rules as our own.

Is there a timeline to this confusing list of entries? Or is this like SMT's Amala Network?

Now that I think about it, tying Killer7 together with No More Heroes does solve one question in Travis Strikes Again that I initially dismissed as a joke

How Travis manages to "drive" from the US to Croatia. In Killer7, they introduce intercontinental expressways. Setting the two games in the same universe would explain this feat. Still doesn't explain how he gets to ride an airplane - to Japan.

TSA has delivered in the most unexpected ways. When it was first shown I thought it'd be some arcade-like game with a cute Suda-like twist but certainly not to this extent.

Do you think Suda really wants to follow through on his Killer7 Director's Cut idea ? I can see this happening

Don't do this to me, Suda. This is too much. Enabling a continuation to Killer7 by connecting it with a presently relevant game and Suda's most well known franchise?

I would be beyond thrilled. Don't play my heart like this.

This is nuts. It's such a long and significant cutscene, I wonder why it wasn't in at launch?

Sudaaaaaa!

Im confused. I havent played the new game yet, but am I missing something because I havent played yet? Was there an old cinematic there instead?

The original opening is still there. It's Badman driving on his way to Travis' trailer to kill him before being sucked in by the Death Drive. It gives context to this opening, how he found Travis, why did he have a Death Ball in his possession, what is the past of Badman, etc.

Is it? And if so, how do you see it again? The first time I played it (pre-patch) I got the old opening, but the second two times I played it (post-patch) it was the new one. And it goes straight from the new opening to the main menu. I haven't finished the game yet either, still on the 1st level.

i really hope there's some actual purpose to introducing Dan here instead of just cheap fanservice, i have so many questions, namely how is he even around, how the fuck did he get a death ball, what happened to all the other personas, how is mills still alive? I mean Curtis is dead so we can surmise that everything revolving around the events of the Coburn gym actually happened. if that's the case, what the fuck happened to the US? did Japan end up conquering the entire world like the ending of Lion suggested? was Matsuoka killed by Emir? did the US declare war on the world? i was always under the impression that Killer7 and No More Heroes weren't in a shared universe but Suda referenced Garcian/Emir at the end of NMH1 just for shits and giggles but this changes everything. Killer7 and No More Heroes are now officially connected. IIRC Suda went on record to state that the NMH franchise is separate from all the other Kill the Past titles. We know this isn't the case anymore with Travis Strikes Again. Even looking back on Killer7, it didn't really tie into any of the other KTP games (in the official sense anyways, there's a lot of speculation like Iwazaru, Kikazaru and Mizaru being Sumio, Fyuki and Iseki and that Garcian is a stock body of Sumio Mondo), only from a thematic standpoint.

i don't see them just introducing Dan like this for no reason if they aren't planning on answering some of these questions. like this is HUGE. are they about to retcon Killer7? considering Curtis is dead, maybe the meeting between Dan and Bad Man happens during the events of Killer7 instead of after it.

this still wouldn't explain how
  1. Travis is able to board a commercial plane to Japan
  2. How the internet still exists
  3. Why Japan hasn't been nuked to oblivion. I mean everything seems to be running as normal if TSA is anything to go by as we get to go to Akihabara and visit a maid cafe business as usual

Don't think too hard on it. It's fanservice.

I do think it's important not to think too literally about how killer7 would actually fit into the expanded universe established by this game because not only have people noted the world details that make it incompatible with other games (ban of the internet and air travel), but killer7's story turned out way way different from how it was originally planned. Shit went through a lot of rewrites and revisions, stuff shown in early trailers not making it into the final release, and the artbook Hand in Killer 7 basically being a tome of all that unused information that otherwise contradicts the very game it tries to explain. Hell, I remember seeing info about how the game originally was supposed to be directly tied into the Kill the Past universe before being turned into its own thing.

I do think there's a purpose for this opening movie being more than just fanservice for killer7 by having Dan be the one who more or less sets the events of Travis Strikes Again in motion. And I think it's because this will give Suda a chance to create a new canon for killer7 that could either be more faithful to whatever ideas he had before they were cut, or something entirely new and different with only the characters as the main carryover. Either way, of all the potential plot threads TSA establishes, this is the one that has the most potential to me.

you guys

by doing this — by destroying the old intro and replacing it with a new one — Suda has

killed
the
past

True! Would be cool to see the old intro again though, I only got to see it the one time. I guess you could always uninstall the patch and start the game again unpatched. It would be weird if you couldn't get to it post patch, because the original intro seemed like a more direct setup to the immediate story of TSA than the new one. I'd think if you started the game up for the first time now, the actual beginning of the game would seem a little random.

Well considering the cyclical nature of Killer 7's world. It could be in another "iteration" or even the one after the end of the game with versions of the same characters

It's incredible how good the cinematography is here. Suda hasn't lost its touch. The first-person perspective, the back and forth between the two, the music progressively ramping up, the extremely satisfying dialogue.

Suda is back and better than ever. What a comeback story. Too bad people won't notice it

Truly. I see people say "Suda 51 is a really cool and unique director", yet people don't seem to really go out and support his games enough.

Why do you think that?

Just a guess, but if you've been eagerly waiting for this game you're probably a hardcore Suda fan who would value the actual box. And there's no way this will sell well enough to merit a second "printing", so you might as well pick it up now.

I spent $80 on Grasshopper games yesterday, including Killer7 and The Silver Case on Steam, so I'm doing my part.

I'm a pretty big suda fan but I got the digital version with the season pass and now I always have the game. No need for a pesky case and card. I would personally just assume that the split between digital and physical would be similar to other games on the platform for the target demographic. That may or may not skew physical, I have no idea, I would just assume TSA isn't a drastically different than its closest contemporaries, whatever those may be.

Anyway I just hope it does well enough to warrant more Suda on Switch. I want a Killer 7 port :/

The physical edition has the season pass in it so it was better value for a lot of us. Also the stock was limited, like 3-4 copies per store at most.

I know value and cost are different things, but wasn't the season pass version 40 dollars either way?

I will probably grab Killer 7 on PC decently soon, to help Suda out as much as possible. These types of games are essential in gaming landscape, and it would be terrible to see it missing.

Hopefully Nintendo throws millions their way so they can make the Sudaverse, also help them make the gameplay and level design better because holy fucking shit

I think it's amazing this cutscene even exists. It's such a small pool of people that would truly appreciate it. I love it.

I mentioned this in a comment on the video, but was anybody kinda disappointed by Dan's delivery in the new intro? It's nothing like how he used to act in killer7. His voice used to be quite monotone, or even bored/unaffected. But here? He's completely different. If I hadn't seen in the credits that Michael Gough had reprised his role as Dan, I would've thought he was being voiced by somebody else.

killer7's my favourite game of all time, so it still gave me goosebumps to see any expansion to the game's universe, but... I was kinda let down by Dan, haha! At least they nailed the art style. That intro level and Dan's model looked exactly the same! :)

first time post patch it only played the new intro. Second time it played the new one, then the old one. I let it cycle a few times and it kept playing them in order. I did hit the A button once during the second viewing, but not during later viewings.

his voice definitely sounded off. i had to rewatch videos of killer7 to see if i misremembered his voice
