PlayStation have just shared the most played games on PlayStation by hours played in their Ultimate 2023 review. There are quite a few countries featured but obviously not every country. There are some very interesting regional trends to see. Rankings are based on total hours played across PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®5 consoles between 1st January 2023 and 30th November 2023.

Interesting regional trends for me.
  • South Korea has no F2P in the top 3, all 3 games are premium titles, Elden Ring & Diablo IV's only appearances.
  • Japan is the only country to feature Apex Legends and Genshin Impact
  • Fortnite and Call of Duty top 2 across all 3 North American countries.
  • Argentina is the only country to feature Rocket League in the top 3.
  • Fortnite, FIFA 23 and Call of Duty is top 3 everywhere in Europe bar Italy who replace COD with GTA V.
  • All of the games are 3rd party.

I don't doubt it's a great game, I like to dabble in fortnite every now and again.

But there are a lot of great games out there. So I can see why looking at this list, people would find it pretty uninspiring that the same 4 games (GTAV, Fortnite, Call of Duty and Fifa) have an almost complete dominance across the global market.

given that its hours played, it shouldnt surprise anyone. those are the most popular console mp games in general.

In all seriousness, I'd be shocked if there were a single players game in the top 3, beating out all other GAAS game.

What's the story about Elden Ring in South Korea?

I don't think this is that shocking? Of course the most played games are going to be live service games that are intended to be played for hundreds of hours. This is like being shocked to see Counterstrike as one of the most played PC games in the early 00s.

Not particularly surprising that mainstream tastes resulted in the top 3 throughout most of the world being Fortnite, FIFA, and CoD, just boring.

Absolutely terrifying. I think Fortnite in particular is a straight up bad game but there's no denying its Meta shit is doing waves.

People not understanding why Sony tried hard to keep COD are out of touch.

All the kids play only Fortnite, Minecraft or Roblox. I wonder how their tastes will evolve. Will they just quit after a certain age and don't play other games or continue to play F2P games while young adults, and what the next generation will like.

very curious why south korea doesn't have any f2p titles in the top 3. maybe people over there who buy consoles specifically look for premium titles?

Not too surprised about the dings against Fortnite I felt this way about WoW for decades until I accepted it. StarCraft 2 was not only my first SC game but it was like an oasis in a desert after having a stick in my craw about there never being any more RTS games on PC for years.

I know I should know, but the "EA Sports FIFA" title - huh?

I respect Argentina for Rocket League.

No Fortnite hate here, the Battle Royale is fun and "fortnite" is more a platform now with multiple games.
