Haven't seen anything from GrayStillPlays on Google that is concerning, unless I missed it. He's a recent person I have subscribed to. Everyone else before him I did some extreme vetting on.

I forgot what Star Trek channel it was now but when Discovery's cast was announced it suddenly went entirely into "SJWs shitting on Star Trek mode."

Steve Shives had a good video about this. Calling them out etc. (Think he's ok? I haven't asked around here yet)

Regularly gets people with his own Trek reviews... Then offends then with his weekly anti-Trump videos c:

I started watching a new Youtube about a dude making ant farms and thought of this topic. I think I would be crushed if he and his ants were alt-right shitheads.

Seriously though, I've trimmed many channels because of this. It's crazy how ingrained it seems to be in certain circles. I also can't stand how Youtube tries to get me to go back showing me all kinds of recommendations I keep telling them I don't want.

Captain Marvel has made this process of elimination easier because I just check a channels's list of videos and if it has a Captain Marvel video with "SJW" next to it I know they're trash.

YES. Been a godsend really.

Nothing worse then catching a new channel... getting a few videos in and catching a whiff of something (usually some "It's just a joke!" type stuff).

Happens to me too.

I search for art tutorials, animation and stuff. And even then there's crappy people.

Yeah its incredibly hard to find good channels based around any sort of hobby or niche on youtube without running into alt-right bullshit.

It's honestly depressing.
really?
I'm into programming/computer science, electrical engineering, art(sculpture and 3d), photography, 3d printing, DIY stuff, calisthenics, classical guitar, math & physics, long form "pretentious" games/movies/literature critique, bush craft, and cooking - to name a few. That's a lot of hobbies but it's extremely rare that I come across anything alt-right or even political unless I jump into the recommended videos rabbit-hole. I subscribe to well over a hundred channels since years back and I've had zero issues with any of them. Youtube is actually great if you are out to learn about things, but I guess most people get suckered into personality-based channels which I avoid like the plague.

Lol you talking about the Hugh Mungus girl?
he did multiple videos about outspoken women loudly proclaiming they were suffering on the basis of gender and making a joke of them. while the incidents he mocks are ridiculous edge cases, it's an obvious tactic to focus on the loudest, most uncomfortable examples of an ideology and use them to discredit the whole thing. it makes the kids who watch him think, "HA FEMINISM IS STUPID AND WOMEN COMPLAIN TO MUCH"

It's bad for everyone.

Meanwhile, it's refreshing to see people take a stand, like the Think Like A Lawyer guy who put out a random video where he bashes the misogynists who are hating on Brie Larson (specifically based on that deleted scene). Even if you're not actively courting alt-right shitheads, it's probably easier to just keep your head down. Predictably, that video got a ton of dislikes.

Never happened to me.

Yet. (Fingers crossed. Damnit Mr chill British Dawn of War caster, don't you let me down.)

I mean, they're not exactly hard to spot. When their thumbnails all say something like "Kathleen Kennedy and Brie Larson's SJW virtue signalling gets DESTROYED by Ben Shapiro" or "Bethesda declares hatred for white men with unfair depictions of National Socialism" you generally know what you're in for.

That's a pretty massive stretch. I would say making fun of ridiculous edge cases is a good thing. Not doing so is probably contributing more to the reaction you mentioned. It is also pretty clear that he will just make fun of the craziest people of the week regardless of who they are.

So you don't have any idea what kind of person he is? Good to know.

You read my mind, I was going to post the same thing, I watch a lot of Trek videos and like you said once Discovery was announced and it was obvious that it was going to be diverse suddenly these channels became a shit show with the usual crap about how it was forced diversity and all that.

The issue here is the use of the guilt-by-association fallacy. Does being friends with a racist make you automatically racist? No.

For me, the point when they cross the line is actively defend or agree with their friends' views.

We don't have control over others' views. Wouldn't it be better to exclusively deplatform the ones with actual radical views?

Isn't he the guy who was being really creepy about Shelley or someone? And I think he was saying that jokes about rape were an essential part of FGC trash talk. I could be wrong, it's been a few years now.
Awwww I hope you're thinking of someone else, that would be a bummer for me! Never heard him be a creep yet, but it's been 6 or 7 month since I follow the Tekken scene so I could be wrong.

What's the bar for radical? Because JonTron was advocating race science and, as far as I know, has not walked these comments back.

I'm naturally distrustful of anybody on YouTube anyway, but when I started keto, I was watching a lot of those channels and I got into KetoConnect. And then I saw who they followed on YouTube, just alt-righter after alt-righter. Haven't watched them since.

If you watch any gaming or anime things on youtube, or heaven forbid both, you basically have to be relentless about pruning your recommendations if you don't want everything to go to shit

like, you have to not only mark the videos as "not interested" or whatever, but specifically tell youtube you don't want shit from those channels

eventually the algorithm gets the idea

Lindsay Ellis is amazing!
I barely follow any YouTube channels though, pretty much just her's.
She makes my favorite stuff on youtube.

Folding Ideas is also good for movie stuff.

Following one of my favourite content producers on Twitter was a bad idea. He always had a Clarkson-type vibe but it's easy to dismiss that as a persona. Not so easy when they start retweeting transphobic Katie Hopkins bullshit.

Youtube recommendations found Factfiend for me, so it's not all bad.

Stick around for the anti-alt-right rant. Note: There's cursing, so much cursing :)

The amount of shit I got for that end part on twitter was both hilarious and eye opening. On the plus side, sonicfox apparently saw it and tweeted me with a winky face or something. Which, well, was very on brand.

It's really disheartening how many people I've interacted with who are fans of the channel who default to thinking I share, or will at least tolerate, their shitty opinions on social issues.

It's also telling that I frequently get messages from people thanking me for not being one of *those* guys on youtube when I personally think I do the bare minimum to show I'm not an asshole. YouTubers really need to do more to address this shit and let their audience know it's not okay.

Aw sheeeit. MRA is a thing?

Long ago, I remember watching this channel Girl says what or something along those lines. Need to check that again later, confirm what type of content she was pushing...

I blame Jordan Peterson (it's not all him, obviously). Your favorite YouTuber likely gushes over him though.

I have no idea how this Kermit the frog sounding ass dude become the alt-right's philosophical poster boy on all intellectual matters, but the guy is everywhere and is massively YouTube famous.

I had a therapist, yes a therapist refer me to his videos. I do not think ill of every word that comes out of his mouth and his self help motivational shit is just along the same lines as most social media influencers. But because the crowd he's associated with--if click on his shit and prepare for your Ben Sharpio recommendations or the "Prove Me Wrong" douchebag. It's a package deal and I don't want any of it.

For the most part, I don't care if don't if my channel isn't spreading that message.

Yeah totally, constantly making videos about how a ideology is crazy and only ever showing edge cases is totally the way to convince someone that it's a good ideology. Totally.

Wouldn't think that JonTron believes that all black people are violent just by watching a random video by him huh?
