Does Tokyo Jungle count? I miss that game so much. I'd pay full price for a port/sequel/Remake

Probably Vigilante 8. A Twisted Meta knockoff from the PS1/n64 era, played it and it's sequel a TON.

Can't get more obscure than a mid 99's Mac only game!

Rescue! - Macintosh Garden

Evacuate the colonies along the Neutral Zone border before the Rulans can raze them. (Early versions used unobscured Star Trek names, until Paramount's lawyers objected.) 1st download is the game 2nd download is a cheater ("drydock") that gives you lots of energy points etc.

I played HOURS of Rescue! In college: it was a game where you piloted the TNG Enterprise around beaming up survivors and fighting Klingons and stimulants. Paramount eventually made the author take it down and change the names due to copyright laws.

Eternal Eyes.

it's the game that got me interested in the Tactics genre. Although it's Probably the weakest that I've played in that style lol.

Nice pick!

I'm not sure if this really counts as obscure, but I absolutely adore D2.

220px-D2_Video_Game.jpg
D2 is a good choice. I was going to post the original D which is a really weird fully rendered CG interactive movie.

Xain'd Sleena aka Solar Warrior.

I played it a couple times in a Missouri hotel arcade area back in 1991 and I rediscovered it over 20 years later.

Pretty good looking and playing game at the time of its release. I'm always a fan of run and guns and this one delivers for me. Plus it has shooter segments as well.

Ha, love FRU.

The designer is a good friend of mine, and he used to post on gaf (but don't think he's on Era, not yet anyhow)

You'll probably like his earlier work, One and One Story: https://armorgames.com/play/12409/one-and-one-story
It's a flash game, but it has the same platforming inventive
Ooo, I like that. That's awesome! One of the coolest games I've played and I had a great time showing it off to people who never played or enjoyed games before. I will definitely check that out.

Not sure how obscure it actually is, it seemed liked it when I was a kid and no one I knew had played it or heard of it:
Ufouria on the Nes.

220px-Ufouria-box-art.jpg

A simple metriod type game, where new powers/characters let you explore new parts of the map. It was fairly short but I found it so charming.
I played through this game so many times and was just so relaxing. Look at these screens, how can you not love it?

My brother and I played this game a lot growing up. I've never seen people talking about so I'm going to assume it's an obscure game.

It's really not that obscure (been mentioned in this thread once, in fact), but I really enjoyed E.V.O.: Search for Eden. It's an action RPG from Enix about evolving through the ages. You get points that you can choose to distribute to different traits (better jaws, better tail, better, different shape, etc.). Plus it's kind of weird, which I enjoy.

Ide Yosuke Meijin no Jissen Mahjong 2 for the Famicom - Its a Capcom developed Mahjong game, that uses its own special controller. What sets it apart from its previous game is that it has a full RPG mode - but turn based battles are replaced with Mahjong battles. Its a weird fusion of a Famicom RPG and a Mahjong game and turns out to be pretty damn fun (if you can play Mahjong that is, else your out of luck). One of the weirder games Capcom made that I really love (and I'd not be surprised if I'm one of the few here that's ever played it!)

I have this game, imported it on a whim together with Devil Survivor (SMT spinoff).

Loved Devil Survivor and maybe it even qualifies for this threat since I doubt many people from my country (Netherlands) played the original on the DS since it was never released here.

Anyway, KitN on the other hand I only played for half an hour or so before tossing it aside. I felt completely out of my depth. Seeing it mentioned here makes me wonder, ten years older and wiser now, if I should maybe give it a second chance.

Hey I'm pretty sure I've played that... sort of. I don't think I knew what I was doing, so I didn't like it very much.

But speaking of old obscure Mac games, here's some I do like:

chrysanthemum1.png

Chrysanthemum - An arcade puzzle game akin to Tetris where you have to arrange certain flowers in certain shapes to clear them.

mantra.png

Mantra - A Zelda clone of sorts. Kinda rubbish, but at the time it was great... or at least better than nothing. lol

pathways_2.png

Pathways Into Darkness - Bungie's first FPS, has some RPG adventure elements which is pretty neat.

destrek.gif

Desert Trek - Plays near-identically to Oregon Trail, but replaces the educational aspect with a more intense edge-ucational focus.

Obscure the Aftermath is legitimately one of my favorite games. I remember buying the wii version and it was my first real experience with a horror game since I was a little young when RE4 came out. I'm how obscure it is but it always seems to be unheard of to friends of mine wherever I've lived.

Quiz:
can you name all the mecha's original source of inspiration?
I'd fail that test. Is the idea each design kind of took from a well known mecha series?

Not sure which name lines up with which character,
but some 'Shogun Warriors' in the big guy (Kikaioh?).
Gundam in one of the (twin)?
And even some bubblegum crises in Diana-17.

It was never localized unfortunately, but it's one of the best interactive movies/VNs I've ever played.
Hilarious writing, tons of pop culture references, and a story full of twists and turns.
It was made by a lot of the people behind 428: Shibuya Scramble, and even takes place on the same timeline, I believe.

Yes. the entire game is a homage to mecha-anime as a whole..from the intro to every mecha-'stereotype'.

Kikaioh -> Mazinger Z
Rafaga -> Macross VF-1 Valkyrie
Dixen -> Gundam RX-78-2/Partlabor
Pulsion -> Ultraman/EVA01
Twinzam V -> Getter Robo
Diana-17 -> Virtual On Fei-Yan
Wise Duck -> Mech Warrior
Bolon -> Magical school girl anime stereotype

If we are talking played - not necessarily loved, it's probably Silver on PC in the late 90s - a western action RPG with the look of the PS1 Final Fantasy games:

Then we have one of the attempts to fuse the rts genre with 3D in Dark Reign 2

Dark Reign 2

And to be honest the most obscure games I played and loved were probably mostly demos in the 90s and early 2000s where I can't remember the names.

One was a very open game, first person perspective - it had something that reminded me of Operation Flashpoint but more Scifi oriented. You had one weapon that could transform into a sniper, a rocket launcher and an MG and could be played in Coop. Felt a bit like Euro-Jank from that era.

Then there was this one game in some form of 2.5D where you played a space gladiator. Kind of zoomed out, would most likely classify as an action game.

These two puzzle games for WonderSwan.

Flash Koibito-kun (Kobunsha, 2000):
Score based action puzzle game in which you impersonate a cupid-like Ninja that need to accumulate the protagonist love for women in the form of hearts, the startegy is to do combo by accumulating hearts into bigger hearts without breaking the ones incoming due to the various hazards present in the stage.
fEvCcGOl.jpg

Engacho (NAC LTD, 1999):
Turn based puzzle game with a grotesque aesthetic.
You need to move the protagonist to a goal without touching gross monsters present in the stages which move in a precise direction that is dependent on the direction of your choice.

Love this game. I remember trying it on a PS1 demo disk and it beating me up pretty bad. Couldn't beat it until I got older.
This game is amazing, I've tried it for the first time on a demo disc too :)

The difficulty is nuts, there's some cool artwork during loading times, the soundtrack is good and memorable. And I find it funny that they needed to mention "From the creators of Tomb Raider" on the cover art, because I think this game is way better than any Tomb Raider released in that era lol.

Here's a video showing a bit of gameplay from exactly the same demo disc that came with my PS1, sweet memories:

Wow! Looks like a karate version of Bushido Blade!
In which aspects do you mean? I loved Bushido Blade too back in the day :)

I've seen it mentioned a handful of times on the forum, but I love Gadget Racers (aka Choro Q HG 3 in Japan, or Road Trip: Adventure Avenue in the US - the localised titles for this series are a complete mess)

Basically a series of open-world RPGs where all the characters are cars, with a large racing component of which this is my favourite.

This game has been around for years, but doesn't have a Steam page as the devs don't want it to be "early access" before launching.

Starsector

Starsector (formerly "Starfarer") is an in-development open-world single-player space-combat, roleplaying, exploration, and economic game. You take the role of a space captain seeking fortune and glory however you choose.

It has an awesome mod community that has added factions, hundreds of new ships and places to explore and hours of new experiences. I've put over 60 hours into a single game and haven't even scratched the surface of the vanilla game. Only $15!

The forums and subreddit are very active as well. A certain edgy youtuber did a great video on the game, but I'm not sure if I can link him. Here's a trailer from a while ago:

I have a few.

Code Name Viper on the NES which is a very nice action platformer in the vein of the Rolling Thunder series.

Sorcerer's Kingdom, an obscure RPG on the Genesis / Megadrive which you can only pick ONE character from your entire team of four to act on your turn, whereas every single enemy on the field in battle can act individually. Yeah it wasn't very balanced. Also the game didn't have levels. Character strength increased based on their actions. Elrad the Mage for example while early on his strength was spell casting, by mid / endgame he could be almost as capable with melee weapons as the main character who was the designated Warrior type with no spell casting ability.

Steambot Chronicles is an obscure game, and even with all of its shortcomings, I genuinely and unironically love it

Hmm, I feel Shinobi PS2 is pretty well known around here and has its share of fans.
But how many know about the sequel, Nightshade?!

My "true" pick for this would have to be an obscure space adventure by Epic Mega Games called "Solar Winds". I got part 1: The Escape on one of those "collection of shareware copies" CDs that were super-popular in the 90s, and it was a brilliant gem. Played it to death until I finally managed to master it, and then I was able to find part 2 on an abandonware site eventually. Not as compelling of a story, but still pretty solid.
