I don't know if I can ever recover from the first 16 minutes of this week's episode.

I honestly skipped ahead in 15-second intervals until they transitioned to the news. Not everything has to be for me, so I think its fine but that just wasn't a conversation I was interested in listening to and it made me really glad that I stopped following Phil on twitter a while ago.

Love the show though!

Forgot to mention earlier that I picked up Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap on Switch thanks to all the glowing recommendations I heard a while ago on this podcast. I really like it! Thanks, P1P crew!

Does your podcast client not do chapters? Cuz you could've just skipped right TO the news that way!

Loved the first part this week. I had a relative do one a few years ago, and they said the taste wasn't that bad, and I think they had a lime flavor. I wonder if the taste can very a lot between outfits.

Episode 603: A Kraken Time

This week! Japan gets a cheaper Switch configuration, some portions of the internet objects to Battlefield V's inclusion of women, Fortnite's made a lot of dang money, CJ's still playing Sea of Thieves (and roped Greg on for some sailing too), Greg's still on about LEGO Dimensions, and Phil teaches his son the meaning of the word "Bloodstained." Yeah, really sucks. I love that game, and was very excited about Uber Jason and Jason X stuff. But, things happen, and if it's not to be then... ah well.

Well I've got a bit of catching up to do. I listen to podcasts at work and I've been off over a week with another week to go due to getting married!

What an absolutely delightful start to the podcast this week. Someone with some artistic talent needs to draw
CJ's school outfit and Greg's balls.

I gotta say I see what CJ sees in Sea of Thieves and I don't know if any other game will even come close to being more fun than I've had with SoT. It feels impossible, I've just had so many memorable and new experiences with that game, it's really special.

Wall of text incoming.......

It's the first time a single game has swept up all my gaming time for multiple months at a time. At this point, that's 6 months and well over 200 hours - been playing since the closed alpha in January. Played every week it was available during betas up to launch even though all experienced was wiped afterward, and then a few days a week every week and multiple hours on weekends. Safe to say I have probably never enjoyed a single game as much as I love Sea of Thieves. And the core loop of going on missions is only a small part of it. The real appeal to me is that when you load up, you don't know exactly who you'll encounter out there, how they will react/play, and whether you will end up winning or losing. I find playing on a team and either besting another team or losing to them/losing everything extremely exciting. You encounter another team on the seas, and no stats come up telling you whether the other ship are noobs or experienced players. You have to judge what their intentions are based on their actions, or maybe the color of their sails. And I like the manual nature of everything in the game. Maps, sails, steering, knowledge of the islands... it doesn't give you the standard "video gamey" niceties like radars and constantly restoring health or constantly better weapons and gear, and somehow it works. The game's design seems incredibly simplistic, but the tools that Rare has set forth and even the lack of narrative has given way to lots of fun experiences. I don't disagree with many of the criticisms of the game, yet it does something for me that no other game has and damnit it's compelling. And I was very skeptical about the game since its reveal all the way up to the Game Awards last year. I didn't get it. Then i watched a few vids that changed my mind, played the alpha and have been hooked ever since. Ruined me for other video games.

I realize it may be a little like a broken record on the podcast but man, this game. :O

That's been my experience as well. And a lot of stuff people are trained to hate like not leveling up (beyond rep) and keeping people on an even playing field, the gameplay loop, the way you can't really BEAT the game at all, you just get in and play...hell. It's been wonderful. I just can't see anything else giving me this kind of OTHER experience that I absolutely love. SoT#1!

Right I'm all caught up.

I got Google Home (great speaker btw) and asked it to play the latest (at the time of listening) episode of The Player One Podcast. I got the reply.

"Ok, playing Player One Podcast Episode 608 Greg's Hypercolor Balls"

Almost spat my coffee everywhere!

Any Generation 16 fans out there? The new episode will be released on Monday, July 16. I'm going to try something a bit different this time around by doing a premiere stream on my twitch channel at 9pm EST that night. Come watch and chat with me and other wonderful people! Hope to see you there!

I'll likely never play it but the Sea of Thieves impressions have become the favorite part of my choice....always good to see real enthusiasm towards a title.

Seems like a really cool game.

One of the greatest joys in SoT is eavesdropping on another boat full of people and hearing them get worked up when they find you.

The idea that the next Halo needs to return to the roots of Halo is bonkers. But not unpredictable considering it came from the host of Back in My Play. ;)

This has been brought up twice on the show in the last month but one of th talking points seems to be that there are too many games coming out on the Switch per week; making it difficult to sort out between the bad games and the good games (an issue that exists on XBL and PSN). I've heard this same argument on other podcasts, it's interesting how the narrative changed from 'The Switch has no games' to 'The Switch has too many games'.

I personally don't think it's an issue because good reviews and word-of-mouth seems to be carrying the good games to the top: Hollow Knight has been a top seller and the pre-order for Dead Cells are making it already show up in the top 10. I think the eShop interface is the best one for the 3 main systems because it is quick and easy to navigate but it also has different ways to search for games (best-selling, discounted, featured).

Even before Hollow Knight, games like Celeste, Owlboy, Steamworld Dig and Golf Story had no problem finding an audience despite the competition. I don't think it's an issue as long as the "shovelware" games aren't outselling the great games.
