Rumour has it Microsoft ordered Obsidian to make sure the PlayStation version is missing the last 3rd of the game. Expect much lower scores for that version.

Will the switch version only have the final 3rd so that non xbox fans have to buy the game twice to get the full experience? Will the retail on xbox one have an exclusive prologue that the gamespass version won't get?

While I won't say it's impossible, I think the backlash to a "ps4/switch version is missing a large chunk of the story" would be a very bad idea.

Hi 70s thinking it will be like alpha protocol where the majority think it is clunky, but Will have its fans who think it is great.

I was joking. It was a play off from the big thread last week when lots of people thought MS stopped the PS pro version from being 4k.

I kinda realized that after I posted:X

Though now I do want to see a game where 1/4 of the story is on each major gaming platform (pc, xbox 1, ps4, switch) for maximum confusion and salt

I expect it to be low 80s, maybe high 70s. I expect a great story and worldbuilding, a serviceable gameplay but plenty of jank. I'll play it regardless of the rating however since it's on Game Pass, so I'm not exactly anxious.

"I said to the team, 'I hope this becomes your Fallout'": The directors of The Outer Worlds discuss its development

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky discuss The Outer Worlds, a game that feels torn out of time without being dated by it

Been fully playable for 2 years now? That is a lot time to do content and technical polish, but game still seems rough in spots.

Weird, budget coming to bite them?

Not a first party game.
Not a first party game but they will definitivley build up on that with the next entry.

You guys are correct, but Obsidian is now a Microsoft 1st-party dev. I essentially consider Hellblade to be a 1st-party game, even if it was developed when Ninja Theory was an independent developer.

Either way - regardless of the game's status (and it is most certainly not an internally-developed 1st-party game from start to finish, as you guys say), I'm hoping for 90 metacritic.

No doubt the game will suffer from it's lack of budget. Private division is an indie label after all. Trying to do such an expansive open-world type game on a small budget is always going to result in cut corners will will chip away at any metacritic score. Shame they didn't get MS's money before this game.

low 80's. good game, but short (for an rpg).

Short for an RPG is 20 - 30 hours. It might be possible to blow through it that quickly if you just follow the main path, but I doubt it's going to be that short for most people who actually get invested, and don't necessarily even do most of the side quests. Around 40 hours is more than perfect for me since I like to replay them at least once usually. Anything that claims 80+ is just full of bloated filler anyway.

Think of it more as a "wide-linear" game. More focused maps (with some openness), but more densely packed as well. They cut out all the meandering.

Heh good question. I think since Sunset Overdrive isn't on Playstation (yet), no I wouldn't consider it Sony first-party. And I wouldn't consider Ninja Theory's Heavenly Sword to be a MS first-party either (since that was only on Playstation). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not an expansive open-world type game. They've told people not to expect that from it.

Yes they have tempered expectations. But that shouldn't matter when it comes to review scores. It will be compared accordingly to it's contemporaries like every other game. Which is why it will probably fall slightly short due to budget constraints and that will be shown in it's overall score. I'm not shitting on Obsidian they are one of my all time favourite developers and I have no doubt this game will be entertaining as hell. But it's what it is.

It doesn't have any real contemporaries though aside from The Witcher 3 and I guess Greedfall. Comparing it to ME:A would only be doing it favors. None of these "RPGs that aren't really RPGs" count in my mind either.

Do we have any indication as to how long this game is going to be?

I thought I read them saying that players should not expect this to be some long open world RPG.

I really hope it's successful enough so Microsoft will give them good money to expand on the next game.

Sequel funded by MS would be in weird place. Doesn't MS / Obsidian own IP, but Private Division holds publishing rights for it?

This isn't MS first party game either as it's funded and published by Private Division to PC, PS4 and XOX.

15 to 40 hours is developer estimate, depends on how you play and how deep you dive to side content.

Wow, didn't know it had been that ready for so long.

"Boyarsky says, with Cain jumping in to add: "The Outer Worlds has been playable from start to finish for about two years! I've played it at least 15 times."

From what I've read, the world sounds more like a Borderlands style 'open world', rather than a traditional open world.

584 hours long confirmed.

Yes. If anything, it's closer to Mass Effect 2 or 3 in layout.

For the power gamer, it will definitely be closer to 40 since the level cap is 30.

I know it's Obsidian and they have a track record, and it's a RPG which lends itself to jank, but they're talking and acting like they don't think it's a massive problem. Previewers have had hour long free play sessions for the last month or so, and it's had a decent amount of development time. It'll have bugs of course, every game does but I'm reasonably confident it won't be that bad at launch.

Were the Pillars of Eternity games janky on release? I know we're sort of comparing apples to oranges, but I thought Obsidian's most recent games were praised for their depth and lack of Obsidian-style bugs?

Anyway, I expect mid-high 80s. I feel like Obsidian's penchant for world-building and gameplay depth will help push the score up even if the gameplay is a bit flat.
