How do you know? If Mitch was the President and Obama was a majority leader who did not gave his nominee a shot, do you think Mitch would have just rolled over? He would have absolutely seated his nominee and when the term was up, would have torched Obama if he tried to unseat him. The truth is we don't know if this would have happened. The point is Obama could have done it, even for a year.

The overall point which I keep emphasizing is that Democrats do not have a lot of fighters. They mostly have a bunch of losers in suits who adhere to decorum and play by Republicans rules. They need to act through, not just empty platitudes and musings.

Dems have found the perfect role for them in our electoral system. They are gonna let the GOP do whatever the fuck they want, while they stand on the sidelines and say "this wouldn't have happened if you voted for a more moderate candidate, donate more to DNC and bow to the establishment".

Wait wait.. what? You can ban that? Isn't that just... a thing you can buy?

So they ban abortions but they also ban contraceptives? Isn't that just... making everything worst?

They don't believe sex should happen out of wedlock and women have to give birth to whatever babies god gives them.

Contraceptives are hedonism and against the principles of the twisted form of Christianity they believe in.

Are you serious dude? You know this behaviour is ecactly why you're living in clown country now, right?

right, which is why the Dems should give people any hope that things will get better by you know actually governing!

I'm not going to stop voting against the GOP, I would love to have a reason to vote FOR the people I've been voting for.

Elections have consequences. And it plays out over years.

Trump got to appoint garbage to SCOTUS to support a far right agenda. Those are lifetime appointments. If you voted for Trump or didn't vote at all in 2016 then the blame is on you.

so technically porn is banned too?
Thomas was laying out the roadmap for what to challenge next, they did not overturn those other decisions. So technically, no... porn is not banned, and gay sex cannot be prosecuted by state officials; but if challenged and overturned - state by state you could see differing scenarios and in some cases (parts of south and midwest) you would see local and state officials throw people in jail for engaging in gay sex - even in the privacy of your own home, with consenting adults. That is absolutely a possibility.

What I hope people start to realize is that this isn't an individualized rights fight - this is a collective rights fight - and everyone needs to back each other up and support each other, because they are coming to pick apart your rights.

If you have a penis and don't plan on having kids (or more kids) get a vasectomy. Don't leave all the reproductive health decisions solely on your partner. It's worth it

I've seen this tweet before or something similar.

Look, Americans could have DC literally up in flames for a year straight over these things, and it wouldn't matter in terms of making a change. If anything it would embolden conservatives to be increasingly restrictive and embrace their hardliner status even more. The ruling MINORITY class that has more or less been given a free ride to theocratic rule thanks to our rotting, smelly corpse of a constitution give ZERO FUCKS.

2016 was for the rest of our adult lives, if you sat it out I hope you can see why the "lesser of two evils" argument however cringeworthy is still true. This didn't have to happen.

This country disgusts me in moments like this. The fact that people who are not even elected directly and somehow get lifetime appointments can make rulings that affect the trajectory of the entire country is an absolute joke. Trump - who lost the popular vote - was able to cause this directly through his appointments. Absolute fucking joke.

Everyone needs to get out and vote in their general elections at the very least. I can only hope that this galvanizes the Democrat base into fighting back a possible red wave. And then I hope that maybe we can all get lucky and Biden will get a chance to appoint at least one more SC justice before his term ends. Unlikely, but there's always a chance.

Nah, he isn't a fucking tool. He would gladly bring back slavery.

The guy LBJ yelled at in the very famous photo did not vote to pass the Civil Rights Act. Also he had like 75 Dem Senators

Yeah, he had 75 dem senators at a time when Dems were in-part the racist party. It was after CRA that GOP became the racist party.

I've read all 4000 pages of Caro's biography in progress, I know it's not just about yelling at people (and some of the stuff LBJ did wouldn't work in 2022, so I don't literally mean "ANY" of the things he did.)

All of this is happening because RBG thought she was going to get "The Year of Ruth" during the first year of Hillary's administration with movies, TV specials, books, interviews, and parades culminating in a big retirement ceremony where she handed the baton to her hand picked successor.

Agreed.

Dems need to follow same play book. Look for loop holes, block shit by the faintest amount of bullshit you can pull from some old ass book, make DC and PR a state, stack courts. Do the shit GOP would do and have done. I dont care if Dems become "villans" for progressive agenda and to protect people's rights.
PR just voted to further restrict abortion rights so not sure statehood would do much in this case. It should happen (or they should be independent), but don't push for statehood under the assumption that it will help progressive causes.

Mood at the Supreme Court was disbelief and anger. Anti-abortion people were bumping around trying to stir shit up.

Welp, quite a few of those justices lied directly to Congress. Time to pack the court, Joe
This!!

Would Biden maybe have the "right" to do so now? Like on the national stage, would that hurt him or help him now if he said it?

This is bullshit and I feel he should have done it before but he was peddling the "reaching across the isles, I can work with them" bullshit. We know it hasn't worked. Time for plan b?

All this actually happened because America elected a game show host and also the republican party has spent the last half century putting the pieces in place, hope that helps!

You asked for examples of things Dems have done, I provided them. All of those happened in a span of two years after dems flipped the Virginia state houses in 2019.

I have not mentioned leftists once in this thread. I have responded to specific people offering up braindead commentary of "merp merp this is the Dems fault actually!!!"

Voting takes a few hours per year and does not preclude literally any other type of engagement. Voting for harm reduction is the logical and moral thing to do.

I'm talking about the actual material conditions of every single American. Also who do you think is critiquing the Democrats on this left leaning forum? It's certainly not people on the right.

If you don't want to vote or engage in civics any longer, that's fine. Understandable.

you will still have advocates for your rights and life, and I hope you find some sanctuary in a trusting community.

Jumping down the throats of "voting doesn't work why even bother?" people is kind of shitty IMO. Right now they're very likely acting on emotion and, no matter how shitty their view, they're entitled to it.

I'm saying that as a Communist who realizes they have to vote down the blue "D" line on every major ballot to even hold out hope that something can change. I realize how voting in America works and how the two-party system needs to be followed (even if I hate myself for doing it) but can't you see how even those that toe the line like that can get frustrated when things still don't get better?

Let people be angry. Let them FUD up the place. If it bothers you, block them. If they get aggressive, report them.

We've just watched the court send our country back in time by fifty years in a single moment. It's going to cause emotions, especially anger, depression, and resentment, through the fucking roof. I don't envy the mods that will have to monitor this and other threads for the next few days.

That sounds to me like a threat to ban homosexuality outright. What on earth happened America?

We elected a fascist executive, who elected fascist judge kings. Civil rights have always been a tenuous trend here. More a consequence of convenient politics than anything deeply cultural.

We were founded on slavery and genocide. We'll probably end with it, too.

If there was a general strike today until changed happened then legislation would get passed. The Democrats would be forced to act, they wouldn't wait until November. They would have to act now.

Not with this mentality, no. With this attitude you will become a "democracy" like Russia soon.

It works in many other countries, but you don't even dare thinking it or trying.

Protesting (sometimes violent) is the only way a democracy can keep itself on track when the democratic institutions are abused to the max by a radical faction.

Your version of Mitch would've abolished the filibuster to overturn Obamacare when Trump asked him to in order to fulfill his campaign promise. McConnell knew it wouldn't have had impactful results so he didn't do it. It's simply not reality.

Schumer forced a vote on the Women's Health Protection Act last month after the SCOTUS decision leaked, but do Dems get any credit for that?

How about guarantee the right to travel to a pro abortion state and reimburse the costs fully for such travel? How about allowing abortion clinics to use space on Federal military bases in these states?

Look I came up with two things the President can do in about a minute.
You came up with one thing the President can do. But you did come up with a thing.
