Star Fox: Grand Prix, Metroid Prime 4 and Donkey Kong 128 triple reveal at the Game Awards

But for real, it's probably gonna be Prime 4 and an HD Trilogy with the former releasing later in 2019 and the latter in early

I hope that whenever we see it, it's spectacular. The first prime blew me away. The follow-ups, not so much. It's been some time now, so I'm hoping for a big leap forward for the series.

Yeah, but it was in 2017. A Holiday 2019 release, while not secured, would be a reasonable guess. Even if they started development on the day of E3 2017 (which they didn't), they would have 2.5 years to finish it. It's more than enough to make a non-open world AA (in terms of budget, not quality) game. It's about the dev time for Doom Eternal.
I dunno... this is Nintendo we're talking about. They will take their fucking sweet time when it comes to a major project.

I really hope the TGAs give ample time to the actual awards this year

No more quick fire awards like "Winner of best rpg went to P5" and theb not have the creators come up and accept

I get its hard to schedule all of this while still having time for announcements but I believe Geoff can do it

You think it isn't?
Do elaborate.
It looks as different from Dark Moon as Dark Moon did from the original.
The lighting and shading already are something on a completely different level than anything displayed in Dark Moon.
Most of all if you really think they will use the same engine from a 3DS game for a Switch game I don't know what to tell you.

As long as Geoff brings Josef back all is good.

Not true regarding first point. Clearly looks more like dark moon than dark moon did from original in terms of overall appearance and style.

Lighting is improved sure. But geometry and other aspects not so much. Like at the furniture and items. they are super low poly and flat

Yes. They could start from the same engine and build upon it. That's how Nintendo works. They rarely make new engines from scratch

I wonder what aesthetic they'll be going for... Prime 1?2? 3? A mix of them all? Something completely new?

I'm skeptical.

Nintendo hasn't had a truly exciting reveal since Odyssey and Botw.

Luigi's mansion looks like it's using dark moon engine.
Fire emblem doesn't look graphically impressive.
Let's to reception has been mixed.
Smash is a known quantity.

I need some real hype for a first party game from Nintendo
I don't know, I thought the Smash reveal was all kinds of exciting. The big punch was "Everyone is here".

This isn't Nintendo's engine however, it would be Next Level's engine. And as I've mentioned, they have been hiring for folks with unreal engine experience for a bit before the reveal of this game. Not that it proves anything, but I don't think it would be cost effective to reuse a 3DS engine unless you want to spend the budget on an R&D team

Unless you're Game Freak

Speculation: The game will not be called Metroid Prime 4. They'll remove the number and add a subtitle. Something like "Metroid Prime: Returns".

The baggage that represents the number will be too much when the last game was 11 years ago and only moderately successful so they'll remove it.

You can quote me on this.

given who this game will be aimed at, that "baggage" is nonexistant

Metroid Prime: Fortitude

I'd much rather have Bayonetta 3 instead.

No thanks. That was such a flaccid announcement for me cuz IDGAF about Bayonetta.

Agreed, I fear that Nintendo would make a conservative game (last one was released long ago so maybe they think that the formula is "fresh"), and I'd happy if they shake the formula ala BotW. You know what I want? A Metroid game without items gating areas.

Nintendo needs to sell Metroid to a new audience too. It's not sutstainable to expect it to only sell to the already Metroid faithful. There's not enough of us. The brand needs to grow and it's harder to jump in for an uninitiated if the new game has a "4" on the title.

I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped the 4.

I believe they said somewhere this game is going back to the single planet of the first Metroid Prime game.

i completely support this speculation and belive it. with switch there's a tone of people who are new to all these nintendo series, there's nothing less attractive to people than a game with a 4 in the title when they haven't played any of the previous games. i expect them to drop the 4 from the title, maybe even the prime subtitle, and for the game to be a soft reboot

Witcher 3 managed it somehow, and continuity for that game is going to be a hundred times more important than it ever will be for any metroid game. If they make an excellent game, that matches what the public would actually buy, word of mouth will do the rest. If they don't, it won't matter whether there's a 4 or not.

For a little closer to home example, Xenoblade 2 massively outperformed the prior games too. I think you're massively overestimating the effect a number showing a game is a sequel has on the public.

Nintendo will probably drop the 4. The "4" was only necessary to show Nintendo fans it was a continuation of the Metroid Prime series. So, all of us here know what it is, but millions and millions of people have ZERO clue.

But if they do a Metroid Prime Trilogy HD prior, then they could use that to keep the "4", but still I wouldn't be surprised if it's called Metroid Prime Begins or something as a soft reboot of some kind for brand new fans.

maybe even the prime subtitle

This one definitely is not going to happen. The games without prime in the title are the 2d side scrollers, the prime ones are the first person games, it's an entirely deliberate distinction.

You know what I want? A Metroid game without items gating areas.

Wait. Am I reading this correctly? So you want a metroid game where the power ups don't grant you access to new areas. That's not a metroid game then. That's literally the defining aspect of the genre.
