I'm trying again... (not an expert, I just google things and act as if I know stuff)

www.cargolux.com

747-400F specifications

Cargolux - The Global Cargo Carrier of Choice.
The 747 can fit 23x 10ft contoured pallets and 7x 8ft full pallets.

The PS5 is 15"x10"x(3"-4" variable) and the controller and stands can be placed vertically.

If the content can fit in a box 18.9"x12.5"x6" including padding:
118x96x125 pallets = 5 x 10 x 19 boxes
96x96x125 pallets = 5 x 10 x 16 boxes

About 900x for the 23x 10ft contoured pallets (950 minus the contour corner loss)
About 800x for the 7x 8ft full pallets

So at least 1.5 million consoles on 60 flights.

EDIT: and if they actually use the bigger 747-8, then it's easily reaching the max payload capacity instead of being limited by volume.

Everyone assuming that taking the air freight is corresponding to the console being expensive, why don't assume the opposite? The console is cheap enough, and they want to make sure that everyone can get one before they run out of stock.

I think it probably has nothing to do with price and more to do with boring logistics. Feels hard to read price into these kind of decisions to me?

It fits the dumb narrative of it being a $600 console because of....shit I don't know.

I believe they want to have enough supply to set all the launch records for a new console. This in itself can be used as a marketing ploy to further make PS5 more attractive.

Now we know why they removed the disk drive from some consoles.

Lake Titicaca
Adam Boyes had to do the same back in the day. Here's actual footage of him delivering PS4 systems.

Pretty cool but as others have pointed out this isn't the first time they or others have gone this route.

As someone who has dealt with air freight previously. The cost of 60 full flights is frightening.

Most airlines are close to going bankrupt. Sony has used this to their advantage to close affordable air freight deals. This won't be as expensive as it used to be before the pandemic.

1.5 million sales on day 1 would be an impressive press release.

Well they are expecting them to fly of the shelves.

I was in game last week and the worker said no one is interested in reg their interest in xbox but everyone is coming in and wanting to reg their interest in the ps5. This machine is very very much in demand. I hope I get one at launch.

Wonder if these costs will factor into the PS5's pricing... or if this is part of the justification for a higher price. That can't be cheap.

I imagine they're going to most likely pass the cost onto consumers.

Never mind, I read everyone's posts about the subject.

Gotta laugh at people trying to somehow tie this to price. It bears zero relevance to the price of the system. We'll probably know that on Wednesday *fingers crossed*, but it'll have nothing to do with how Sony shipped the consoles.

Probably not as expensive as it normally would. Airlines looking to generate revenue.

There is no way they are going above 500 expecting numbers like this. God I hope I can get one at launch.

I never thought I'd have to pre-order a console but...well, looks like these will fly (he he) off the shelves. Please let there be stock in my island.

Is this just Sony or third party companies like Amazon and other retailers using different modes of transportation from the factories? 60 flights for the whole planet doesn't sound much when you count all the countries that it's launching in.

edited according to on a tweet above posted by --R This might just be the U.S. with little overlap with other countries.

buy or sell the idea that sony would do this so they could release a small(er) quantity earlier than the series x. like say....exclusive early preorders?
