AVGN aging well...haha, no.

As for Doug, yeah I heard Linkara mentioning the Wall review during his rant against Doug's shitty production values. I'm guessing he's just as amateur from when he started.

So yeah, I'm into a thread shitting on Doug's crappy reviews.

Pretty sure Brad sides with Channel Awesome. He doesn't agree with/defend everything they've done but he's ultimately taken their side. Don't think Larry is there to spite them either.

Except he said multiple times that he's staying out of spite. Because Mike pretty much ignored him for everything. This is his weird revenge.

Having gone back to old AVGN, Spoony, Linkara, and Nostalgia Critic videos over the past few months while many come across as dated, there is still a lot of good content there especially in the old AVGN and Spoony episodes.

Nostalgia Critic episodes are a lot more miss then hit, I find it funny his better older videos are ones where he crosses over with people who have actual talent or knowledge of the subjects their talking about.

NC has always been maximum cringe.

Too bad Spoony went nutter butters because he had some quality content.

There's a great (in a bad way) video he did where the running skit is he meets his younger self and condescendingly lectures himself about how mature and great his content is now and anyone who prefers his old stuff needs to grow up. It's truly amazing. But yea his stuff is barely even watchable nowadays.

Well, it's probably a good thing he disappeared considering his state when he did, but I do miss him. I'll still go back and watch the Ultima series, the Phantasmagoria 2 playthrough, or some counter monkies every now and then.

I mean, yeah. The NC reviews have gotten very skit heavy and with less of a focus on critique. Well, legit critique. He nitpicks stuff just so he has something he can use. Then again I haven't watched any of Doug's things since a bit before #ChangetheChannel happened.

I like the surreal visuals at the end with the weird CG creatures but as someone who's never seen The Wall this did nothing for me.

Granted at the end they get called out for not doing what a review was supposed to do so maybe that was the point

Never liked the guy before but figured maybe I just misunderstood his humor or just didn't find him funny, seems I'm not the only one.

I love James Rolfe and remember when he came on for on his reviews and I happy trouble getting through the video because he drove me nuts.

Pretty much my feelings too. I still like most AVGN videos and some of the early Nostalgia Critic videos. However, while I still watch any new AVGN stuff that's done, I went off NC even before the ChangetheChannel stuff. I liked how no frills the early videos were, and that was lost over time.

I still really like Spoony's stuff; he was possibly the most naturally entertaining of the reviewers that emerged at that time. It's a real shame that his issues have all but killed his online career.

I don't watch NC, but even I know his "reviews" are not really reviews... Was it different back in the day?

Honestly, yeah. There was a stronger sense of "reviews", "reviewers", and "reviewing" back then between content creators and their audiences (in a way not too dissimilar to old-school wrestling and kayfabe) and Doug was no exception to that.

Nowadays you can't really just be an angry nerd in front of a camera ranting about old media anymore, and Doug's been particularly burned by Demo Reel failing, so the end result is him going a lot more skit-heavy to maintain a sense of identity.

Old AVGN and Spoony hold up much better than many of their other counterparts because both are above-average actors with a solid sense of comedy. Spoony's stuff particularly holds well for me and I'd legit call him the best comedian and comic writer of the "old guard", and as much as I want to feel bad over his mental issues it's really a goddamn shame he's settled with shitty Twitch streams and Twitter rants.

If people want a refresher on The Nostalgia Critic, Doug Walker, and the whole Channel Awesome thing, you can read through my OP (and thread if you want) of the controversy as it was happening as I was the first one to compile a lot of it:

The former members then put out a document of grievances as well as detailed in this thread:

www.resetera.com

"Channel Not So Awesome" - Ex-contributors of Channel Awesome detail a history of abuse (READ OP)

What Channel Awesome is for those uninitiated: --- A group of ex-contributors from the website 'Channel Awesome' (A site most famous for 'Nostalgia Critic') have posted a nearly 70 pages long text document detailing lot of abuse and misconduct the site's management had levered at them...

This is the entire document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/...hOaBP820UBa4dA/preview#heading=h.smmxroimnosh

In short, it's a shitshow and deserves to be ignored. The Walkers and Michaud were asses to their employees/friends, consolidated power/money, and kept quiet about a former child groomer that was on their site until they responded so terribly to the document that they accidentally outed the person.

Didn't this story involve a Doug Walker or his brother acting as someone's bodyguard by carrying a katana around?

Didnt Nostalgia Critic quit his old job by standing on his desk and flipping everyone off? It's been ages I just remember thinking what a class act.

Yes.

From their PR person Holly after someone was fired and became a liability:

"Oh, hey, and who can forget the time Mike Ellis got fired and CA put me in a safe house for a few days because they were concerned he would come after me? Nothing was more strange than being escorted to my house with a group of guys with baseball bats and a sword so I could pack"

"To inject a bit of humor in the horror, I wish I could remember who carried the sword. I WANT to say Doug, but I'm pretty sure it belonged to Rob. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it was Doug who tested the pepper spray by spraying it into the kitchen sink."

Yes to that as well:

I always found it funny how avgn lead me to the nostalgia critic which lead me to channel awesome, and by the end the only person who's content I stopped watching was Doug's. I gave up on Doug's NC videos even before his first retirement and demo reel disaster. Demo Reel is maybe the worst thing I've seen someone put out, fail, and them essentially try and double down on the concept.

As to the question of "were the old nc reviews actually reviews" I guess the answer is kinda? You can argue a lot of his reviews were more a recap of the film that riffed on the bad moments. That said Doug could and would do some legit reviews especially in his old vs new segments. At the end of the day a lot of Doug's success was clearly right time, right place, and right signal boost thanks to the AVGN. The idea of having a collab website was also brilliant and probably would still be doing well today had it not been mismanaged into the ground.

I'd also say James Rolfe having an actual background in filmmaking also helped his videos age pretty well.

For a guy who likes bash various directors and writers, Doug's actual production quality just seems really amateurish and cheap. Even compared to other content creators.

Like, do I even need to bring up how Kickassia clearly doesn't look like it was white balanced properly or how they used the camcorder's microphone?

While nothing of his has aged particularly well, I still can't believe his intro song. It's so edgy and played completely straight. I imagine Doug hearing it and saying "whoa this is soooo epic".

That was the video that pretty much made me fully stop watching NC after loosing interest for a while. Change the Channel just further solidified my decision.

AVGN's newer stuff may not always hit for me but it's still loads better then anything NC is putting out.

His videos aren't really reviews, more like bad comedy skits, and AVGN videos hasn't aged well ether, hell I can say the same thing for pretty much everyone from Channel Awesome

Nope as more time passed Brad fully supports Doug and condemns change the channel. It's why I don't watch him anymore but have picked up Lupa, phelious and Lindsey again.

Brad shitting on his former peers for voicing their concerns back during Change the Channel made me drop him like a rock. Which is a shame, because he was and probably still is damn funny.

and the gun. the gun is everywhere. why is the gun everywhere.
My god, the gun. Like they said in the video, guy's really "up his poopoo".

This review is what happens when a content creator lives in a damn echo chamber of praise. Zero self-awareness, no attempt to improve (his videos still look like shit after 10 years) and complete disconnect with the rest of the world.

His videos aren't really reviews, more like bad comedy skits, and AVGN videos hasn't aged well ether, hell I can say the same thing for pretty much everyone from Channel Awesome
Basically, he took the failure of Demo Reel and just transformed NC videos into Demo Reel 2.0.

It particularly speaks to the echo chamber the Walkers have kept themselves in that they've barely evolved over the years, especially when it comes to production and editing. Online content creators have dramatically improved their craft over the last 5 years alone, while the Walker bros are still doing only slightly-better versions of the same camera pans, animations, and green-screen effects that they were using back in 2011.

Phelous honestly has gotten so much more entertaining now that he rarely does horror and instead does rip off animation and bootleg toys.

His Dingo and Goodtimes reviews are great.

He honestly likes reviewing bootlegs and ripoffs more so then horror movies.

the beauty and the beast review from a few years back was a turning point. once Old Man became a recurring character i think his channel got a lot better.

90% of the time it turns out that a YouTuber is horrible, I kinda feel lucky that I've found that person really cringe-inducing from the beginning. This gooch is no exception.

You could not pay me to watch the person in that thumbnail talk about anything.
