Do you have any sort of plan for tackling your backlog? Or do you just play whatever tickles your fancy? Do you even have a "backlog"?

My backlog, at this point in time, is ridiculously insurmountable, and it's constantly growing. I pretty much play whatever I feel like it. Part of my problem is the sheer variety of games that I enjoy. It'd be much easier if I only tended to focus on one genre. Even within RPGs, I pretty much love all the sub-categories.

I don't tend to have a ton of time to play games anymore as a working adult, but I've found that I'm able to clear stuff on portable/mobile devices way faster than on PC/consoles.

Since partway through this year I've been putting my backlog into a Google Sheets document and updating it as I play through. Typical I play about 2 hours a night so I've been steadily working through these. And I've been trying to avoid "Lifestyle games" with no clear ending point like Dota 2 or Destiny until I make more of a dent in this. Although Monster Hunter World is putting a bit of a wrench into that plan.

CZg0QN2.jpg
This pretty much how I do it. Quake Champions is my current "endless" game because I enjoy playing it with friends a lot.

That's right, the ERA RPG Club is back!

We had a great time with Grandia and Xanadu Next (I'm still playing Grandia myself), and now that most of the core Essentials thread festivities are over, it's time to get this ball rolling again.

About a week ago I discussed two potential categories, and after discussion on Discord and on here, we've decided to go with CRPGs (or WRPGs if you prefer that term) with a Sci-Fi Setting. So, if you can think of any games in that category to nominate, please do so!

I'd like to hold nominations for the rest of this week and then around Friday or so, collect all the nominations and put it to a vote for this weekend. I have my own nomination in mind which I'll post in a bit, and there were some mentioned on discord that I'll post in here as well.

As always, the purpose of the RPG club is to motivate ourselves to move outside our comfort zones or play games that we've always been curious about but never found the time to get to. I've had a great time so far and actually played one of my all-time favorite games for the club (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines).

So, with that being said, nominations are open for: "CRPGs with a sci-fi setting." I think we'll end up with a very interesting batch of games.

So, umm, how about World of Xeen?

If that's too long for a Club, how about Albion?
World of Xeen is probably a bit too long (especially if we're talking the full World of Xeen and not just MM4 by itself) but yea Albion is great. In fact I'd be interested in playing that myself, I probably already have it on GOG. (EDIT: Yea I have it, and it's also pretty cheap at $6 so that's a nice bonus if people need to buy it.)

Morizora's Forest
I'll be boring and nominate some easy Shadowrun Hong Kong (I haven't played bonus campaign) and Deus Ex Mankind Divided which I never finished.

The Surge might be interesting too.

People wildly overestimate the length of Xeen. It's 2 games combined yes, but it's 2 very short games combined. Albion on the other hand is pretty beefy.

That Xeen playtime is a 100% playthrough too.

Sorry, but am I missing something? The world of Xeen link goes to the Might & Magic 6-pack and Google shows me MM4 and MM5 when searching for World of Xeen. Isn't MM 'standard' fantasy setting?

However, I want to nominate Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's a Steampunk CRPG. It's on steam and GOG.

Might and Magic has been a sci-fi series ever since the very first game and carried that through all the New World Computing developed entries.

The Heroes of Might and Magic strategy games were traditional fantasy because that community is a bunch of whiny bitches.

World of Xeen is the combination of MM4 and MM5 installed on top of each other. They both play on two sides of a flat planet, and you can hop between them when you play them as WoX.

And yeah, M&M only became standard medieval fantasy once Ubi got a hold of it. Everything before that was much weirder.

Really? The whole MM series is Sci-fi? The GOG page says fantasy and all the screenshots look pretty much like fantasy RPGs. Especially with that red Dragon banner picture.

I have never played the Might & Magic games. Going by the store page and pictures on google search (screenshots and gamebox art) make it seem like fantasy. All pictures seem to depict a medieval scenery with magic an monsters. So what are the Sci-Fi themes of the games? And how important are the first two games of the series.

I nominate Torment: Tides of Numenera. I think it's sufficiently Scifi? Haven't played it apart from the intro so can't say for sure so correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not even that long, howlongtobeat lists the main story to be ~26h. It would be a pretty strong contrast to Xanadu Next since there is very little combat, depending on your play style of course.

I'm gonna spoiler tag here because general late-game stuff concerning the whole series.

All M&M games start out as fantasy world's, albeit with the occasional Hi-Tech seeming artifacts. The fantasy stuff is always just part of a bigger sci-fi universe though, with the late game taking place in space ships and the like. You also get blasters and stuff as end-game weapons.

It's pretty fun how most old "fantasy"-RPGs were also Sci-Fi games. Might & Magic, Wizardry, Ultima just to name a few. I'd wish more games nowadays would go that weirder, more fantastic route.

And lol at that HoMM community jab. I always asked myself why there weren't any Sci-Fi elements. Would have been awesome.

Might and Magic VII spoiler:

So Might and Magic VII has 2 endings, originally the ending where the bad guys win and get the ability to manufacturer the ancients blasters was supposed to be the canon ending. The HOMM3 expansion was going to feature a new faction called "Forge" which was going to be a sci fi faction based off that ending. There was so much uproar from the HOMM community though that they backpedalled on this mid development (despite having most of the Forge assets done) switched the canon ending to the stupid good guy ending and whipped up a new faction (Conflux) which they had to half ass since they had to rush it to make the release date.

I'll never forgive the HOMM community for that shit. Hence whiny bitches.

Played some more Star Ocean 5. The battles where you need to protect a party member are no fun at all. Spawn several long range enemies that blast said party member. I've done two of these now. I sure hope that there aren't many more of these types of fights.

I keep trying to make plans to tackle my backlog, but I have so many unbeaten rpgs and get overwhelmed. I have at least 95 rpgs and I can't pick.

I keep my backlog ephemeral and don't look it in the face. I am sure it is a terrible monster that would paralyze me with its face. So instead I have a smaller version of the backlog floating in front of my mind, with games coming on and off of it both into the played category and into the full backlog.

Finished the main story of StarCrawlers after 40 hours and 7 minutes. It was fun. Lots of polish in the art side of the UI design. I loved the look of the status effects. On the interactivity side, there were a few things I think could have been laid out better in the menus, but they were minor, and a few times I ran into an issue where the text didn't fit into the window and was cut off.

The final boss is a jerk. You're capped at its level, so you can't even try to level up a bit to make it easier. I finished with only one party member alive. I probably wouldn't have made it if I didn't have a guest party member helping out.

Grindy game, though. Very much for people who like grindy first-person dungeon crawlers.

Do you guys want a thread about upcoming 2019 role playing games? Like the thread I took over from NeoGAF? I am probably link to the place, but quickly check it out and tell me if there's any interest. Alternatively, I'll just make the posts in this thread and ask to have them linked in OP.

________

I beat Inquisitor. Mood, setting, story and soundtrack were all good. Combat works, not great or very bad. The big issue with this game, and it's a big one, is the backtracking. It took me 60 hours to beat. Had I not cheated to circumvent all the backtracking, I would have spent at least 90 hours with the game. For all its good points, I still can't recommend it when it shows so little respect for my time.

I've a lot of things in Octopath Traveler. I will be able to complete it before DQXI and Pathfinder release, which is good. With that said, I am most likely not participating in the upcoming RPG club game. Those two September games are mammoths. I expect to spend at least 150 hours on them.

Preferably not much side-quests. Maybe a little bit here and there because my problem is that I can't decide when enough is enough. Usually I get to a point where I do all the side stuff, burn out on a game and then rush through the remaining story missions. Only exception was The Witcher 3 where I loved both and didn't burn out.
I am this exact same way. Sometimes I forget how good a game is when I do too many stale sidequests.
The Witcher 3 and Elder Scrolls are the only examples where I love all of the content (outside of the endless guild quests)
If I had to choose, I prefer the Elder Scrolls set up where the entire game feels optional. Your uncovering of all of the stories is just based on whether you want to keep exploring.

Hey all, just an FYI that I'm going to go ahead and close the nomination period a bit earlier than expected - at 10pm tonight, 3 hours from now - and get the poll up immediately afterwards, as that will work a bit better with my schedule for the next couple days (I'll be traveling). The vote period will last for the entirety of this weekend, and I'll probably close it Monday evening.

So that means if you have any ideas for a nomination, you have three hours to post it in here! There are already a great set of games on the table - here are the nominations so far in alphabetical order, including nominations made in the Discord:

-Albion, nominated by Knurek
-Anachronox, nominated by Mr.Deadshot
-Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, nominated by StormEagle
-Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, nominated by Snormy
-Geneforge, nominated by PensivePen
-Septerra Core, nominated by Mr.Deadshot
-Shadowrun (SNES), nominated by Lafiel
-Shadowrun: Dragonfall, nominated by duckroll
-The Surge, nominated by FiveSide
-Too Human, nominated by Seda
-Torment: Tides of Numenera, nominated by OuijaLuigi
-Underrail, nominated by lunarwhale
-World of Xeen (a.k.a. Might & Magic 4+5), nominated by Knurek

Sinatar Sentinel Worlds added. Interesting looking game, I think I'll probably check it out independently regardless of the poll results.

Nominations are closed! The voting poll can be found here:
Hidden content
You need to reply to this thread in order to see this content.
The poll will be open until 6pm EST on Monday.

Same rules as usual: vote for whatever game you think the club should play through next. Try to vote for a game you yourself are interested in playing, and not necessarily one that you've already played and would just like other people to play. You can vote for more than one game, but try to keep it in the 1-3 range.

As always, there are a lot of interesting games on here. Can't really go wrong!

Ok, thanks. Seems like calling it Sci-Fi and including it in this poll is already spoilery. I think I'll check it out should it win. Which does not look particularly good right now, but not impossible.

Anachronox and Septerra Core are both western developed CRPG by platform which are heavily inspired by JRPG design of the day. Which makes it interesting that they were both nominated. Because one is actually pretty damn good, while the other is...... pretty damn bad? Is this a test to see if people can tell which is which?! :D

Totally random aside, has anyone played this game in Early Access and would you recommend it as it is coming out of Early Access soon? https://store.steampowered.com/app/368340/CrossCode/

Thanks!

Time to do this. I will be listing any upcoming 2018 role playing games for 2018 and onward. I will NOT be sorting by release date. Instead, I will sort the list by the type of game it is. It's more of a broad stroke, but I hope that people will like the format. When a game releases, I will post about it in this thread. Already released 2018 games will not be listed.

NOTE: this post will be continuously be updated. I'm beginning with PC games as I am copying the list from my RPGCodex thread. Console games will have its own post.
