Started gaming back in '85. My dad bought home a Toshiba MSX and the rest is history.

Seeing games progress through the different generations has been pretty amazing, with the magical period really being the 90's - 00's.

Can't remember the exact year I got it but I started in the mid-to-late 80s on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2, so I'm in my fifth decade šŸ¤£

The Speccy lasted until the early 90s when the TV-out went faulty. I was only interested in games on the Speccy, so when it died I received a Master System II for my birthday one year, and the rest is history.

I am currently on my 4th decade of gaming.

Reading about a PS1 demo as if that were a long time ago makes me feel old.

Seems like that pic is more for a Xbox Gamer?

As for myself, my daycare in the mid to late 80's had a Sega Master System... I later eventually got a Nintendo.

Started with a good old NES in 89 (maybe a bit earlier on a NES at my cousin's house though). Never been unhappy with videogames, they are a hobby for life for me, like music.

I'm 30 so 25 years now. Looking at the poll results, the site skews toward the older end of the spectrum. Either that or the kids are busy at the weekend!

Probably been playing since I was 1 or something, but my earliest memories are in the mid 90s. So, if we use 1995 as a baseline, 1995... 2005... 2015... coming up on 2025...

Not quite "damn I'm old" yet, but getting embarrassingly close!

Technically I started gaming in the late 1970s with a Pong machine at home, but never progressed beyond that. And never owned Atari consoles or played arcades.
STarted gaming for real in the late 1980s when I discovered arcades and eventually got a NES.

Commodore Vic-20 was my first. 1981. Most gaming devices since then.

Maybe a year earlier if Game & Watch counts.

Since the mid-80s. Old enough to remember when big format war was commodore/spectrum here and nobody knew what Nintendo was.

Approaching the big 4 oh but still gaming. Just not much atm due to starting a new relationship after being single since 2011. So less gaming but hey who cares!

Started with nes in the 80s but even if I feel old I don't think it's that uncommon. Nes was a huge cultural revolution so it's not hard to image that most who grew up at that time play in some capacity and some of us are bound to end up in enthusiastic forums like this.

Born in late 80's, there are pictures from before my memories of me playing Atari 2600. Or, at the very least, looking at the screen while holding the controller, not sure if I was cognitively trying to achieve anything in the game at that point.

My earliest retained memories are from the early 90's, playing that same Atari 2600. I got my own Genesis and a handful of games gifted to me on my 5th birthday. That didn't really inspire an enthusiast level engagement with games and I only played casually for a few years -- I wouldn't experience that transition until 1997 when I played FFVII, and it's been my main hobby ever since.

So I've been touching games since the 80's but probably only cognitively engaging with them since the 90's. Became a "hobbyist" in the late 90's after a few years of just casual childhood engagement.

I'm 32, I first encountered a video game when I was 6 or 7 (can't really remember).

My parents did not really approve of video games but I finally got my own console when I was 10 or so.

I'll put it this way:

I remember going to the summer festival game tent to play pinball, but they also had these videogame things like Breakout and Space War and Night Driver.

And when Space Invaders came along, I didn't care for it, but I loved Galaxian.

I started in 1972 with the Magnavox Odyssey. I was 3, I played Simon Says on it with my mom at least twice, I can actually remember it dimly. Apparently we only had it for about a month, then my parents thought it was a waste of space so my dad sold it. I always liked video games from then on, and in 1976 I started going to arcades (though back then they were like 90% pinball machines with just a few video games sprinkled in.) Like most people my age, I completely lost interest around the time I started high school (which just so happened to be right at the time the Great Crash happened, what a co-ink-ee-dink.) I got back into games right after I finished college in 1991, haven't stopped since.

Started about 1984. Don't know how I got started since I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but it was my dad who bought my Atari 2600 that I used until I got the NES for Christmas in 1987. Everything was cheap for it since it was after the crash and you could pick up a bunch of games for cheap especially at flea markets.

Cool to see so many oldheads around these parts. Been at it since the late 90's. Got my first Gameboy Color in '99. Good times. The folks who were playing the old Atari and the like have my respect!

I'm interested if anyone started gaming when they were already an adult or later in life. For the most part this thread is really just "how old are you" lol -- most people get hooked as kids. Some people quit gaming, but those folks are probably not on this forum answering this poll šŸ˜‰

Late 70s... I remember being blown away by space Invaders, Pong and Asteroids. I'm still blown away by games today, it's been a trip seeing gaming evolve.

Two games I enjoyed very much, pre Space Invaders

Space Wars, Sea Wolf

My dad brought home a Colecovision in (IIRC) 1983, I was 5 at the time. From then on I got the NES in the summer of 89 and the rest is history.
