It's been a tough year game wise.

Prey never hit my radar, I don't know why but it seems a game I would enjoy but it just fell to the way side. May pick up for Xbox soon.

Dishonoured 2 I have no idea what it's about and never played the first. There seemed to be no marketing for it and again slipped under my radar.

The only games. Bethesda has backed has been fallout, elderscrolls and Wolfenstein

It's a shame. Prey really was a lot of fun. It definitely has its fair share of issues but Talos felt amazing and there was a decent variety in gameplay. Arkane creates beautiful levels to traverse and the thought that is put into alot of their settings is top notch. Prey and Death of the Outsider are both up there this year for me in a year of great games.

I know that I have to play Prey at some point and I'm probably going to love it. I picked up Dishonored 2 a few days ago and so far it has exceeded my expectations, even though I played the first one years ago. There's just so much to love about it, I don't even know where to begin; from the art style to the atmosphere and lore. It's an essential single player experience on current gen consoles, as far as I'm concerned.

Since someone mentioned Styx check out Neon Struct, another old school classic style stealth game with things that hint toward immersive sims even if it's not a real one. Dishonored leaned towards that anyway.

Wait what? It's 90% off so you can get it for a few bucks/euros. I'd rather you don't and wait for it to get back to a higher price haha :P

It's good but super indie. Eldritch (and other less popular stuff) developers. Their best work. Mission spoilers above.

Thanks for the recommendation! I've just bought it and it feels like Thief, even the level design.

Prey is such a good game.
One of the few times I really want DLC.
Just can't see it happening.

The Prey reactions vid on the official Bethesda channel five months after launch fucking kills me.
Arseholes.

If I had to pick one, should I get Prey, Dishonored 2 or Wolfenstein?

I enjoyed the last Dishonored a lot as well as Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein 2 is best played as a balls out shooter and not comparable to Prey and DH2. Think more along the lines of Doom with a bit of stealth thrown in. I really enjoyed the game's new focus, but it doesn't seem to have been as well received on Era.

As for a recommendation, personally...

I loved DH1, and DH2 blew it away.

Similar. I don't tend to play through games twice but there's so much to revisit and retry in those amazing levels. PC issues are mitigated by capping the framerate so don't let that put you off.

Thanks! I think I will go with Dishonored 2. I loved the first one. I have a feeling I'd like Wolfenstein and Prey but I don't have a burning desire to play those immediately.

After what happened with Deus Ex MD my mentality is "I just glad they made one more of these" without any expectation of a sequel.

People don't want this kind of games anymore.

But I will say one thing, that Prey demo on the PS4 was pretty bad.

Prey was fun but had a lot of problems that went on to completely ruin my time with it. If it wasn't so broken, I think I would have enjoyed it more. I've heard that people had better experiences with it on PS4 though, which is great.

That is extremely disappointing, albeit expected. They are both great games but launching with little marketing and not much fanfare has stunted sales. Both games with a stronger push could have done better, Dishonored 2 for example should have launched as a title to show off the Pro but was disappointing in that aspect. I hope Bethesda continues to fund these titles into the future though because Arkane has a lot of talent.

All the praise got me to buy the game for $20 (I also read the criticism, but the mechanics that were praised piqued my curiosity anyway.) Really looking forward to it.

I know, but with the almost nonexistence marketing for 2 you get this result.

I totally agree to that. As I said in another thread here and here already, Bethesda's marketing is _incredibly_ bad. They could not do a worse job. They can't even sell Wolfenstein. Add a more niche genre like "immersive sim" or "survival horror" on top of their incompetence and the odds of selling a huge amount of games go down even further.

I wonder if a lack of marketing for the game allowed them to not have to require the game to get millions of units sold. Is it possible that they are expecting these games to sell consistently thru Steam and digital store fronts for several years rather than several months? Is it then also possible that they reduced the marketing budget based on the idea that they will get the game sold eventually?

I'm thinking that this may be the alternate route compared to the EA / Activision model for sales.

IGN has a piece about how Prey and Dishonored were in the top 10 games sold during Black Friday, based on data gathered from IGN Deals' Black Friday articles and wikis.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/11/28/the-10-best-selling-games-and-blu-rays-from-black-friday-2017

10: Assassin's Creed Origins
9: Call of Duty: WW2
8: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
7: Destiny 2
6: South Park: The Fractured but Whole
5: Prey
4: Dishonored 2
3: The Evil Within 2
2: Middle-earth: Shadow of War
1: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

I picked up the Dishonored Collection and Prey during the sale. Haven't played Dishonored 2 yet but Prey needs to be played by more people, I'm still playing it and enjoying every minute of it. Such an expertly crafted world to explore.

its also plain boring and unsurprising after 3 hours in

People wanted more of the original Prey
I disagree about that first sentence, but yeah, calling it Prey was pretty dumb. Not only it didn't have anything in common with the original, but also nothing with the open world parkour version that got people hyped up. They really should have made it a new IP instead of trying to retro-fit old one.

Never really understood why they rebooted when the original sold more than 1 million in 2 months. It also was a complete development hell and whatnot but it still was a really fun game

Prey, as an IP, was pretty much dead. Hardly anyone remembers the original, aside from a very, very small group of core fans, mainly on the PC. I do agree it was dumb to name the new game after it, but saying that "most people" wanted a return to the old game and it's characters is wrong, IMO. Most people were simply apathetic to it or had no clue about its existence.

Prey 2017 is 1000x better than the original anyway (though I did love the idea of the Human Head developed sequel going down the cyberpunk/bounty hunter route... A shame we never got to play that too)

How can it be better than the original when it's straight up not the same kind of game ? the only thing they have in common is the genre. Prey went through 10 years of issues, sold well and got forgotten - meanwhile the sequel also had a ton of development issues and got cancelled

You're asking me how I think one game can be better than another one, just because they're not in the same genre? Seriously?
