Let's roll back the page 150 years and let Britannia Rule the Waves!

The UK could become a "true global player" after Brexit by opening new military bases in the Caribbean and Far East, the defence secretary has claimed.

Gavin Williamson said he was looking into new opportunities for the armed forces as he described leaving the EU as "our biggest moment as a nation since the end of the Second World War".

He did not identify any locations but a Sunday Telegraph report suggested the possibilities included Singapore or Brunei in the South China Sea and Montserrat or Guyana in the Caribbean.

And that's not all!

"I am very much looking at how can we get as much of our resources forward based, actually creating a deterrent but also taking a British presence," he said.

"We are looking at those opportunities not just in the Far East but also in the Caribbean as well."

Mr Williamson also predicted Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Caribbean states and nations across Africa would look to the UK for "the moral leadership, the military leadership and the global leadership".

I feel nauseous.

Everyone will be looking at the UK as fucking clownshoes instead of a leader in anything beyond self flagellation.

It's nice to play make believe.

The UK simply doesn't have the resources or capability to make this a reality.

The British Imperialists remind me of the Lost Cause Confederates here in the USA: obsessed with a backwards ass time where life sucked for anyone that wasn't white, male, and upper class.

Brexiteers and Trumpets in a right-wing cultural Cold War to see who can be the most deluded Anglo-Saxons in the world.

Cutting the defense budget to deal with shortages elsewhere as a result of Brexit sounds like a better idea. Not spending MORE.

I always thought that American exceptionalism was embarrassing, but at least the US has the necessary economic and military might to back up that exceptionalism, however bad it might be per se.

But English exceptionalism in the 21st century is just ... pitiful and sad, really.

these people just spent the last two years deluded that their country is still a big enough deal that the EU would roll over and give them all of their benefits with no downsides

why are they so in denial about the collapse of the empire decades ago

even the most obnoxious Americans don't have such a bizarrely unearned sense of confidence and importance

That's some nice make believe but what about the NHS though?

Would be nice if the UK wasn't run by utter bellends for a change.

I don't know anything about military procurement in the UK, but I hope they don't have to import anything, if only because I don't see the pound getting out of this stronger.

They no longer are a major super power when it comes to it's economy or military. Brexit will significantly damage economy as well. They can go have their pipe dream but in reality they will be worth jack shit.

Urgh. Please believe most people here below the age of say 50 think this is utterly horrific; the issue has long been the mass media (particularly print) in the UK has leant right, and preyed on British-exceptionalism for older generations who can't bear to think the Britain they've had shoved down their throats doesn't exist (or was fucking awful in actuality). Some people just can't get over the fact we're just a shitty wet island off the coast of Europe who have very little industry anymore.

In the past few years, even before Brexit, the UK have shown very little leadership of any kind when it comes to major issues. It's usually Germany and France and the smaller European nations to have a strong say in favor of environmental measures, Iran nuclear pact, Syrian refugee crisis, etc. Cameron and May have been sitting on their asses.

Years and years of cuts and all of a sudden we're going to have a military presence again.
Why is this even a talking point. There's a fucking legendary scolls worth of issues as it stands let alone post Brexit. Talk about clutching at straws.

Brexiteers and Trumpets in a right-wing cultural Cold War to see who can be the most deluded Anglo-Saxons in the world.

America wins. The motivation levels don't even compare.
