The first page's screen shots are giving me the horror. You'll be telling me playing 4.3 content in stretch mode on a TV is the new hotness next. Save tate for tate enabled games. Get some Mushihimesama going. It's glorious.

I wish more applications on Windows supported vertically-oriented monitors. As someone who thinks a lot about aspect ratios, I have to say that it'd be interesting to see more games (or maybe movies) experimenting with support for different aspect ratios (including portrait aspect ratios).

OP, that monitor rotation is for coding, web browsing, tate, and pinball. cease your experiments immediately

I actually tried to game like this once, just as an experiment. Most games, of course, don't do well. For FPSs (the ones that actually work with 9:16, that is), it's an interesting experience. The resolution appears much higher, as it's basically only rendering what would normally be the middle ~third of the screen, but that's also the obvious downside: your FOV is now only like <30°. Which, for an FPS......yeah. Less than ideal.

Portrait gaming is good for pinball games and some shoot-'em-ups designed for 9:16. I'd certainly like to hear of more exceptions, though.

I mean, I'll rotate my monitor sometimes for shooters, yeah. I'm no savage.

but, uh... I'm not sure if I care enough to try it with other games. Seems like it would narrow your FOV to a level I'm not comfortable with.

I love TATE Mode but come on man, this sucks. Most of the game aren't nearly vertical enough for this to make any sense. Playing vertically is cool, but only for games development with this in mind.

People, you need to see the game in motion to understand what going on, I mean Doom in motion in portrait mode is fucking visceral. Most intense thing you will eve play.

Honestly you are missing out.

Doubtful, other than intentionally crippling your fov to make shit even harder. Which sure if that's what you're going for great but I prefer to actually have some awareness of a given arena :P

The Skyrim pics are admittedly lovely but I think that's more due to framing for some good screenshots than how enjoyable the moment to moment gameplay would actually be using that ratio.

Outside of shmups I just don't see the appeal.
