Seems like it's referring too much to a specific optimisation rather than the general concept *of* optimisation.
And should be implemented at an engine level on all platforms, rather than only really being required for weaker ones!

LOL, ludonarrative dissonance was literally the first thing I thought of.
Memoization really doesn't make sense in this context though and isn't generally used when communicating with lay people and it's way too specific

To work at something to make it more efficient. But in the context of making games perform better or require less resources.
He's asking for an insanely hyper specific word and Memoization is it.
