Exactly, everything about this is so strange. They also are planning something else but can't yet reveal it. Why not wait till you know what you're going to do.
I know people here probably don't want to hear it, but PSX and or Gamescom is too many tradeshows a year to visit. Now they are left with nothing.
The general public and a majority of the people who purchase their systems and games won't even notice.

They had far more than just one good last year and their games continue to be among the best selling and highly rated exclusives around. Sony is hardly "miles ahead", assuming they're ahead in the first place
Is it? Can you imagine the hype and anticipation for a 2020 Sony Press Conference (not necessarily E3) after being silent for a year? The whole fucking gaming world would watch the announcement of PS5.
I think one conference a year, with four quarterly Directs for release dates and smaller titles is the right balance.
When your competition is fierce and development budgets are ballooning - it would be wise to isolate yourself and make a splash rather than a whimper.

I can't imagine wanting that. I already disliked the PS3 early on, for instance, several more years of games clearly being intended for more powerful hardware would've rubbed me the wrong way
