Cover Is For Cowards Trailer | This Is Outriders 101 Trailer
Outriders is a 1-3 player, cross-platform, class-based, third-person sci-fi and fantasy action rpg PVE looter shooter. Whew! It eschews many of the looter-shooter genre's conventions by being content-complete day 1 and focusing on up-close and fast paced power-fantasy combat instead of methodical cover-to-cover shooting. It's more 3rd person Doom Eternal with a Diablo loot and grinding mentality, and less Gears of War with loot or Division with powers. Borderlands, not Destiny. It's got some b-movie, cult classic vibes and isn't ultra-polished. To understand Outriders, it's almost easier to say what it's not...

1P3ZXMM.png

...and that begins with the game's prologue. The first couple of hours of the game misdirect the player into a long string of cutscenes and tutorials that give the impression that the game is a serious one, with a focus on methodical cover-based shooting. The prologue does not focus on the fast-paced, cover-ignoring, aggressive combination of melee, abilities and shooting, nor the class-based healing triggers that represent the foundation of the gameplay's core loop.

SG7Q8p4.png

Long story short? If the free demo, or the first couple of hours of your Gamepass download bum you out, maybe stick with it. The intro doesn't represent the very fun game that lies beyond it. There are hints that this is a subversive decision, to make your transformation into what amounts to a mayhem-loving superhero more jarring, with the hero even calling out "wait, are they running from ME?" at one point, but nevertheless, as a tutorial, it does a terrible job at explaining the actual loop of the game: be aggressive with melee, guns and abilities in order to heal.

eXZKDnD.png

At first, the far-off, alien world we travel to, Enoch appears to be paradise - humanity's last great hope for re-settlement. But through an unfortunate mix of a pulpy sci-fi anomaly, an ambitious and scene-chewing scientist and a time jump through Cryo tech, instead we are eventually introduced to the true, battered alien world we'll be slo-mo head shotting enemies in. Enoch is not fully an open-world, but a series of large hub-and-spoke battle areas.

It is a dangerous planet that features a host of biomes, from post-apocalyptic warehouses to lush and alien forests to harsh, volcanic terrain and beyond. You'll spend the game facing off against resentful humans trying to take over your settlement, hostile, hyena-cow looking' wildlife, glowing aliens and...enemy captains and altereds: mini-bosses and bosses that have abilities not unlike your own.

GiETLJ9.png

Outriders is NOT a Games As A Service. People Can Fly have been clear that the game features a complete 35+ hour campaign** on day 1, complete with repeatable story and side missions. If the game is a success, they are open to making DLC.

The story of your character's journey to Enoch, how it affects them, and how you kill seemingly everything on it without a care, is told through fully-voiced cutscenes, the way these games used to be. While there's lore to be collected through the game's journal, this isn't background Destiny lore filling in what the game doesn't tell you, this is a full-on action rpg campaign with some very campy, charming "I'm too old for this shit," dark comedic vibes. The story won't win any awards for writing, but it's charming and goes to some unexpected places. It's longer and more involved than I think most people expected...Bets on how many characters are surprisingly killed minutes after being introduced? Hint: it's at least 3.

The game lets you replay any part of the story or side mission any time, jumping back and forth as you wish. That's pretty sweet.

In addition to the campaign progression, players will move from level 1-30 and progress world tiers 1-15. Each world tier will increase the enemy level, the chances for better and rarer loot drop chances*, and the ability to equip gear up to 15 levels above your player level cap. You can drop your world tier at any time, or go back to your current one to keep progressing towards the next.

*A note about World Tiers: the game is designed to auto-up your World Tier. While this grants you +1 loot drops, it also makes enemies harder, especially at the beginning stages of the Tier, before you've upgraded your gear again. There is **no** penalty for dropping world tiers, other than it taking a little bit longer to get through them in the endgame. If you're struggling, no harm in dropping world tiers to get past a hard section. That said, solo, auto-world tier upping is also possible, and the game is designed to have you right around World Tier 15 at the endgame if you do all quests/side quests and don't die too much.

** reports are that the campaign, with no side missions, will take about 14 hours. That will leave you with 40+ side quests to do. While some streamers blew through the game skipping side quests and cutscenes, they also have said that they expect that if they watched everything and engaged with the side quests, that the 30-ish hours seems right for pre-endgame.

The game also launches with 14 endgame Expeditions that, when completed, unlock a final 15th, acting as the hardest endgame content that drops the best loot based on the selected challenge tier and speed of completion. These expeditions represent the game's post-campaign endgame. Yes, all 15 expeditions have been solo'd already, but by a pretty min-max'd build and by a former pro gamer, SolidFPS.

UPDATE: New Horizon added an additional 4 expeditions, each with its own Easter egg.

Outriders is cross-platform for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, and Google Stadia. Through an option menu toggle, players can turn on cross-platform matchmaking. To play with a specific person on a different platform, players can generate a Game Code with which others can join your session.

giphy.gif
giphy.gif

The host's world instance will determine the enemy level and loot quality dropping. In other words, you can play with your lower level friend bu won't get gear at your level (still helpful for resources, though). The game now scales over-powered players to be about 2 levels above content they are over-levelled for during multiplayer games.

Outriders does not support cross-progression. Any progression earned on one platform can not be transferred to another platform. The game does not have cross-platform voice chat either. So Discord it up (link below!).

However, the free demo does carry over your player level, world tier, accolades progress, materials, gear and mod recalibration library. Drop a Legendary in the demo? It's there for you day one too.

qi8HW3D.png

Are you intrigued yet? Well, if you're on Xbox, here's another reason beyond the demo to give the game a try...it's a Day 1 Gamepass game. Sadly, that's not Gamepass PC, just for the console and Xcloud users. So might as well get a few hours in where you can start feeling the true power of your character...

Players will choose from one of four classes: Trickster, Pyromancer, Technomancer and Devastator. From my experience, they are all really fun, and despite some being classified as mid or long-range, they are all actually very aggressive and close combat compared to most looter shooters. Players are given 6 save slots to try out each class, and will be able to skip the prologue after completing it once. Your characters share a common stash, allowing you to transfer gear between them, though it appears resources and unlocked mods are character-specific. Each class has 3 end of skill tree variants, if you were to go all-in on either weapon damage, anomaly power or defence, but it doesn't appear making it to the end of the tree unlocks any bonuses beyond the individual skills chosen to get to that point. Thank you to outriders.fandom.com for the info about the following player abilities.

Over the course of the game players will gain 20 class points to assign over their 30 levels. They can decide on a combination of nodes that focus on increases to power and efficiency of weapon damage (top), survivability (middle) and anomaly power (bottom). These skill trees also unlock some stronger perks that alter the way a specific build will function. Thankfully, the skill tree can be re-spec'd, at no cost, at any time.

Skill Builder (Compatible with Google Chrome)
But the skill tree is just part of what makes your build, your build...

SkPPW0M.png

Like many looters, Outriders features multiple tiers of loot rarity, from most common to rarest: Grey, Green, Blue, Purple and Gold. The guns are broken up into Assault Rifles, Submachine Guns, Machine Guns, Shotguns, Automatic Shotguns, Double Guns, Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Pistols and Revolvers. The gear is split between masks/hats, chest pieces, gloves, pants and boots. Oh, and there's Legendary variations of all weapon types and class gear slots too...

MRPR5Zv.png

Your gear level will depend on your player level for 1-30, then your World Tier and/orExpedition Challenge level for 31-50.

7V6CMLs.png

Unlike many games in the genre, Outriders allows players to make effective builds, and maintain them throughout their 1-30 playthrough, even as they are gaining new and better gear. Builds aren't just for endgame. The game focuses much of a player's build choices around not just the weapon type, but also around the mods that they slot into their weapon and gear. Grey and green loot drops with no mod slots, blue with one, purple with two, and legendary with two, including one static and powerful mod. Mods drop in three tiers that determine their power level. Tier 1 is the weakest, while Tier 3 is very powerful.

rdOIBMW.png
Byg3SQk.png

f8Q7NZv.png
IdRdbDZ.png

The weapon mods can alter the way the gun performs, from standard increases to things like critical chance or damage, to applying effects to the weapon's bullets, including burn, freeze, slow, toxic, or traits like ricochet bullets. These mods are very powerful.

Gear mods focus more on your class abilities, either granting you extra charges, reducing cool downs, or adding effects or debuffs to them. Again, the mods are very powerful.

More than even the skill tree, the choices a player makes among the hundreds of mods in game will determine their build and playstyle.

B5jHN6C.png

The beautiful part? The crafting system ensures you can always use your favourite mods. Once a specific mod is dismantled along with a weapon or gear piece its attached to, it will always be available to recalibrate onto any other of any level, for a small amount of resources. That includes the Legendary mods. The game's crafting system ensures that if you have synergies you enjoy, that you can keep them, or if you'd like to try something new, you can experiment with them as you play through the campaign.

I'll be updating this Google Sheet with all of the Legendary Weapons, Legendary Gear, Weapon Mods, Gear Mods and Class Mods found in the game. Spot something that doesn't make sense? Just DM me!

Join our Discord? Because this whole game is cross play, the LFG and Crossplay chat functions should be particularly handy...?

Important info for any of the 200 out of 2 million players who cheated in the demo, or plans to in the full game. You better delete all of your characters before booting up on Day 1, as the devs are going to make it so that Cheaters are branded with a watermark on their game, and will be unable to matchmake with non-cheating players. What counts as cheating?

- intentionally not running Easy Anti Cheat software
- modifying the game to "enhance a character"
- tweak game time to reduce how long certain mechanics take to perform
- use a "trainer" program to gain an advantage or use exploits like aimbots or wallhacks

Q: What is this game?
A: A 3rd person, cross-platform, looter shooter from People Can Fly, the developers of Bulletstorm and Gears Of War Judgment.

What do you mean this isn't a GaaS?
A: Outriders launches as a complete game. A full story campaign, world tier system, endgame expeditions, a complete collection of weapons, gear and mods, across 4 classes. If the game is a hit, they may make DLC for it, but the plan isn't to drip feed the player content.

Crossplay? Cross-progression?
Simply: Yes then No. You can matchmake with any platform and play with friends on any platform, but your character's progress is tied to the platform family you played it on.

Q: Is this game on Gamepass?
Yes. HOWEVER, It is only available for console and xcloud users, not PC.

Q: In-game voice chat?
On the same platform, of course. Cross-platform? Nah, you'll have to use Discord or another 3rd party solution. That said, the devs have said they are looking into if it's possible to add at a later date.

Q: What does the free demo give me?
A: You will progress to level 7, World Tier 5, unlock 4 class skills and 2 class skill points. You will play a prologue, a main mission and 3-4 side missions, encountering 2 bosses and a variety of mid-bosses. Please be warned though, the opening prologue doesn't do a good job of explaining the full game's mechanics or playstyle and focuses on human and altered human enemies only. It focuses on cover mechanics instead of melee, abilities and fast-paced action to regenerate health. You'll have more fun if you play more like Doom Eternal and less like The Division or Gears of War, trust me. The demo is available now, and not time limited.

Q: What is the performance of the game?
PC: 4k / 60fps
Xbox Series X: 4k / 60fps
Xbox Series S: 4k / 60fps (but Digital Foundry suggests, at least in the demo, it's dynamic resolution from 900 to 1440p)
Xbox One X: 4k / 30fps
Xbox one: 1080p / 30fps
PS5: 4k / 60fps
PS4 Pro: 4k / 30fps
PS4: 1080p / 30fps

Q: What are the system requirements on PC?

UPDATE: NEW HORIZONS HAS LAUNCHED.
It's a patch that introduces some long-requested updates including: removal of timers in Expeditions, the ability to re-roll Tiago's shop inventory, buffed drop rates and various buffs to underused classes/mods/skills.

This comes after numerous stability and buff patches previously. The game feels like it's in a good place, where most builds are viable through the campaign and into the endgame.

I'll fancy this post up with some more images and more useful endgame content sometime soon.

ZpQKsu9.png

Now that the game has launched, here's some helpful tips/bits of insight about the game. From info about what People Can Fly are working on now to current meta builds.

fs44hsu.png

First off, if you haven't already, it's strongly advised that you turn off Motion Blur in your settings. It's near-universally agreed upon to look and feel better with it off, especially on the PC/Series X/S and PS5 platforms where it can handle the performance.

First Patch Incoming
What Is People Can Fly Working On?
  • DLC? People Can Fly has been clear that they have no intentions of offering drip-feed post-launch support in the form of seasonal or weekly activities. They've said that if the game is a success, they will work on DLC that offers significant content. And, well...it sure seems like this game has been somewhat of a surprise success!
What People Can Fly May Be Working On?
  • Loadouts: they said pre-launch that they internally tested loadouts and were happy with having the game just let you cheaply and quickly re-spec instead. That said, they've also said that they've heard the community wanting this, so it's not entirely off the table.
  • In-game cross-platform chat: this is not in the game. Again, they've said they've heard requests and are looking into it, but gut instinct says that Discord is going to be the long-term solution here.
  • Controller Acceleration: it's clear that this game isn't great at letting you quickly pick off targets from afar on controller, with little to no aim assist and some deadzones/acceleration issues. While PC players can make one-shotting everything seem easy, it's less on console. They are looking into providing more options for players. UPDATE: ADDED IN A PATCH
o1vKBIG.png

Short answer: play on the world tier you enjoy. There is no penalty for dropping tiers, other than a slight delay to getting through them later.
Now that we've got our hands on the game, it seems that World Tiers are a bit of a confusing point for some players. The short answer is, if you want a challenge, you can absolutely get through the game with auto-highest tier on. You will end the game, solo, at Level 30 and at either Level 14 or 15 depending on your number of deaths.

BUT, there is no shame in dropping world tiers either. Why? Well, because while each world tier increases the level of gear dropped by +1, brings enemies up by +1, and ups drop chances for quality loop (it may be 500% bonus chance to drop a Legendary, but the Legendary drop chances are still low), those are all small gains if you'd rather not be frustrated during the main campaign. You can see the breakdown of World Tier modifiers here. You can play on a lower world tier, and then re-play missions/side quests and early expeditions to get your level up to take on the higher tiers of Expeditions.

Speaking of those, Expeditions are absolutely solo-able. I've got a balanced build and am at Challenge Tier 9/15, all solo. SolidFPS has completed all but the final Expedition with a gold rating, solo, and only because there's a group time mechanic on that one. It's doable. It's sweaty, but doable...anywho, once you get to Challenge Tier 15 you will be dropping level 50 gear, the max level available currently.

h1OlkJq.png

Frustrated you aren't dropping legendaries even though you're already Level 20? Well, don't fret. Drop chances are low for random drops, but luckily there's quite a few guaranteed sources. If you play through the main campaign and side quests, and get to later world tiers, you should end up with 12-15 Legendaries. Here are some of the guaranteed sources:
  • 3 x Legendaries tied to boss encounters during the campaign.
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the Hunter Quest line (repeatable for a legendary each time)
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the Wanted Quest line (repeatable for a legendary each time)
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the Historian Quest line (repeatable for a legendary each time)
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the Outrider's Legacy Quest line
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the secret side quest (Forgotten Chapel, I think it's called)
  • 1 x Legendary for completing the Big Iron side quest
  • 4 x Legendaries awarded for reaching Tiers 12, 13, 14, 15.
After that, Expeditions seem like the best way to drop Legendaries. You'll open up a Legendary vendor with a set stock for you, and then get up to 25% 4 x 48% chance for Legendaries on Challenge Tier 15 Expedition runs.

What should you do with those Legendaries? Well, honestly, it's hard to say there's a right thing to do with them. Any duplicates, definitely dismantle the lower copy for the Tier III mod. But in general, both dismantling for the mod, or keeping and putting another mod on the secondary slot seem pretty great ways to use your Legendaries. Keeping 1-2 up to your current level should be pretty easy until the endgame (level up costs get steep at 42-ish). Trying to level multiple up to level 50 may be too much though.

FARMING TITANIUM / RESOURCES / SCRAP ETC.
Want to know how to farm various things? Here's a little farm guide.

QUPORtf.png

Struggling with your build? Here are six very simple tips to help:
  1. Mod, mod, mod. The game is very friendly with mod resources, and encourages you to be replacing them constantly. Do that! A build that's all level 10 but with multiple mod slots wasted since they apply to skills you aren't using will be incredibly weak compared to one that is adding charges to each of its skills or giving boosts to anomaly powers/weapon damage in situations it finds itself in constantly.
  2. Keep your gear at the level of your enemies. Basically, if you're decked out in level 39/40 taking on level 41 enemies, you're going to feel under-powered. It's doable, but definitely harder. Either head to Zahiedi and level up your fave guns/gear, or equip something higher levelled and mess with the mods. You can also farm even blues at the higher level, and cheaply upgrade them to purples. It's cheaper to level up this way than to level up your purples.
  3. The special ammo is very strong. Don't sleep on Blighted Rounds/Volcanic Rounds/Twisted Rounds, even with the announced nerfs. If you pair these with synergistic mods, like Perpetuum Mobile, which fills your mag back-up every time you kill an enemy at less than 30% of your mag, they can ensure that you're dealing massive amounts of damage for long periods of time.
  4. Use your skills smartly, but often. Your skills are very strong sources of damage and heal. You should be using them a lot, not saving them for the perfect moment. That said, having all three skills on Cooldown at the same time is a recipe for disaster. So juggle them situationally.
  5. Once you get to expeditions, the level up process can seem steep in Titanium and Drop Pod Resources. The workaround? Farm higher level blues, and then upgrade them to purples. It costs significantly less resources, and is a simple way to get you back to on-par with your enemies.
  6. Lastly, the core loop of this game has you being aggressive, with the best sources of healing coming from comboing weapon and skill leech. Play the game more like Doom than like the Division. That said, situationally, it can still be very good to take out some difficult enemies from afar, yes, even from cover sometimes. It's not the main loop of the game, but you will have to adapt on the fly to the groupings of enemies the game throws at you.
CURRENT META MBUILDS
I will keep this list updated on Youtube:
OUTRIDERS ENDGAME BUILDS FOR CHALLENGE TIER 15 EXPEDITIONS

All of the builds are up to date with the New Horizon update. They are all capable of solo CT15s or do well in group play as well.

TECHNOMANCER DPS - SOLIDFPS
Well, the early winner for OP builds was SolidFPS' Technomancer build that took the World's First Solo Final Expedition. It focuses on crits and blighted rounds and basically has the plan of kill everything quickly before they can even get close to you. It's still very good post patch. There's also a version using Borealis Monarch's set with Cold Snap and Ultimate Freezing Bullets, but mostly similar to this otherwise.

Alternate Trickster build: Anomaly Power

PYROMANCER ANOMALY POWER BUILD
Similar to the classic Pyro build, Heatwave + Ash Blast + Overheat to consume the status effects/damage the battlefield, still incredibly strong solo and in groups.

Anything else people want to see here other than more meta builds?

Love the demo, but i always got the feeling that 1 or 2 classes didn't make the final cut. Feels like the Technomancer at least should have mobile pets or something

Honestly, this wasn't on my radar until a couple of weeks ago. I'd certainly heard of it, but hadn't really looked into what it was. I love this genre though, so I've re-subscribed to Live and am eagerly awaiting Thursday.

Just hope it arrives before the bank holiday on Friday as I'm planning on sinking a lot of time into this over Easter.

I wasn't too hot on the demo but really hoping the game turns out well.

Wow, your OT got me way more hyped for this game than anything People Can Fly or Square has showed. Amazing job on the OT

Devastator was a complete shock to me. I loved it so much. No other class felt as fun. Usually the tank classes are super boring, but not here.

Great OT. Between this and MH:Rise I'ma be good for a while. Trickster and Devastator are gonna be my go-to classes based on the demo but we'll see.

So glad I stuck around long enough with the demo to realize it's not a cover shooter, it's a play-as-a-demigod-and-slaughter-everyone simulator.

This one wasn't on my radar at all prior to the demo but now it's one of my most hyped releases for 2021.

RIP Mr. Chang!

Kudos to shawnoftheshred for a really detailed and informative OP!

I'd been decidedly "meh" on Outriders ever since it was first revealed, despite liking People Can Fly's output in the past. It just always looked pretty generic. But I've been hearing positive things in the past couple of weeks, and the OT has persuaded me to give the demo a try before the release this week.

What qualifies as long range for the technomancer? Is it just sniper rifles?
Its more of just where the class wants to be. The healing ability for the technomancer is just a flat life leech on all damage, so it doesn't need to be up close like the other classes, who have more strict requirements for popping heals

Honestly, every class can be played super aggressive, and long-range in this game feels more like mid-range in most other games. Mostly it comes down to the skill tree perks, which can grant bonuses to sniper rifles and rifles (and increased drop rate for them), distance bonuses, the life leech, which is damage-based, not needing up close kills, and the fact that your skills can be deployed to do the work from longer range than some of the other skills. Basically, it's the one class that seems like, mid-to endgame, may actually find use in the cover from a distance.

Long Range is determined by distance from the Technomancer to the Target, not the gun used. I don't recall the specific distance at the moment. However there are several nodes in one of the skill trees that shortens the distance considered to be Long Range.

I think all the classes are fun once you unlock more skills. Can't really choose wrong.

I am so glad for the Easter holiday starting this week.

I guess I'll only play this and Monster Hunter for the near future. Thank you Gamepass!

Think I'll go Devestator first time around.

As someone who makes Tiny Dancer puns, like, constantly... I approve of this OT title.

I am still not sure which class to play. They all look fun, except Trickster not interested in it.
