Is a shame that the sprite work is so bad.
They nailed the rest.
The game has objectively better and more nuanced spritework than other sprite-based classics like FFVI (on which its style is based), if you compare their sprite sheets.

Wait, what? Can you hold down the Capture button, to inititate the Switch to record gameplay footage for 30 seconds?
Uh, how is it bad? Those boss sprites in the demo are fantastic.
I love a good water shader
PLENTY of games have itThanks for the thread!
why are so many games on the nintendo switch unwilling to allow capture? this is so unfortunate! I only remember Lost Sphear having capture, where are all the games that allow it?

That looks like a playstation game... Octopath is going for the Snes-era style.
This sprite has way more animation frames that all those characters together.
This is absolutely not Snes.
This sprite has way more animation frames that all those characters together.
That's the problem, FFVI didn't have that good spritework even compared to other SNES JRPG's like Star Ocean or tales of phantasia.
Not even going talking about PS1 spritework games. Even so, the style dosn't excuse the very poor animation of all these sprites.
This just looks miles better and is actually animated too!!

So your entire complaint boils down to the fact that it's homaging a different era of spritework than your preferred one?
I agree that the PS1 had some beautiful sprite-based games that indeed had more complex sprites than their SNES predecessors—but that's not what Octopath's intended style is, and it doesn't need to be. It has its own unique look that clearly resonates with a lot of people.
Seiken 3 is one of the best looking 2D games imo
but why are you bringing that up in a post about low frame animations?
Seiken 3 had like 4 sprites tops per action lol
wut

Still the spritework was way more detailed.
Is a separate issue. The low frames is a SNES limitation that is not needed to keep the style of the era, also some SNES games JRPG had decent animations, way better than this game.
Am I supposed to be seeing something superior to Octopath in those two examples? Because while they're certainly a different style, I much prefer Octopath's.
You say different, I say way more detailed. Is you who said this is way more nuanced than FFVI. Isn't FFVI just a different artstyle then? Or is just called different artstyle when you want it?
Ah yes, their use of more realistic water obviously disproves everything I said.
THANK YOU! Been trying to put my finger on what the visuals give me a feeling of and this is the perfect explanation.Yes. The way it's implemented gives the impression we're viewing macro video of a small diorama. The shallow DoF gives a tilt-shift effect that really sells it. It is inspired.
You've got the large eyes, the semi-chibi proportions and the massive bosses facing tiny player characters, and I'm sure someone more artistic than me can explain the details further.
Thanks for the thread!

While yes the game may not have top of the line sprite work what game has in the last decade? They have a budget and that has to go around every part of the game. It is clear that this game is going for the FF6 nostalgia though. Also its not "Bad" sprite work. Its incredibly good sprite work. Come on now. Then Star Ocean is the same artstyle then....?
And is more detailed.

I think that artstyle shouldn't be excuse for worse spritework than top SNES JRPG or low frames. You like it? Cool, dosn't mean is a think to do with "artstyle"?

Looks great, wouldn't call it top of the line like some of the stuff on SNES/PS1. Im not gonna argue further. Game looks great, its supposed to look like FF6, thats it.

Relaxed Muscle If you are going to shit on the game, the exit door is right there.
You think the Octopath Traveller devs don't have the knowledge to make sprites like the games you are mentioning?
Octopath looks that way on purpose. They are going for a diorama look. If you don't know what that is, google it and you'll understand why the game looks that way. If you don't like the look, and prefer it looked another way, then there are plenty of indie games with what you are looking for.
So please, let us enjoy pics of the game without you spamming other games.
Are you backseat modding?
Contact a mod, if I can't discuss the game graphics (I never spoke about the game quality) on this thread, he will tell me and I'll gladly leave
Even compared to the top snes jrpg is weak.
Also, the fact that it pays homage to SNES era, dosn't mean needs to keep it's low frames animation. That was a memory issue constraint that shouldn't be present.
Dat totally SNES era water shader....
Yes, BoF IV
You should probably use the actual snes version of Tales of Phantasia instead of the PS1 version my dude.
