Some sales data of past mainline games for perspective. Considering the insane software performance we've seen so far with the Switch I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up just short of 15m.

Blue = Original Version ; Yellow = Third Version / Remake
Take with a grain of salt Pokémon shipment data for Red/Blue/Green, Yellow, Gold/Silver and Crystal because the only official shipment data reported by Nintendo is that all those titles combined shipped about 76 million units.
Please take the combined figure instead of the single entries for those games if you need an official source.

I definitely see this game selling higher than or at least on par with ORAS, but 30M? lmao that's insane.

I was aware of how static the mainline games have been performing, but I didn't realize there was an upwards trend with the remakes, between that and obviously the synergy with GO, I see sales going upwards of 15M personally, but I also have this feeling that these games are going to break that expectation easily. I got some anecdotal evidence that definitely makes this game feel a little bit bigger than when Sun launched.

Also the people who are posting about wanting this to sell more than Gen. 8 to spite the hardcore fans, why do you hate us so? I get some posters are overdramatic, but given the number of sales that we're discussing here, you'd think the people posting here would be the ones to understand how passionate some fans are about this franchise and how upset they'd be of being left behind for a nostalgic and more casual audience lol.

There are only reacting to the people that want Let's Go to bomb that's all.

So there apparently is now a way to get Meltan in GO without playing Let's Go, although it's a pretty long and boring quest. And you can only get one Meltan and a few candies, so you'll need to walk a lot to evolve it without Let's Go.

But still, I previously thought they would basically lock it behind a $360 paywall and I guess they didn't. So maybe that particular feature won't sell the game on as many people as I thought.

Yeah, the word of mouth around the game is insane. I was doubting the extent to which these games would be successful (like, I knew they would be, but I was unsure on the degree), and, yeah. Damn.

It helps that it's really good too.

That IS the reason.

I don't want this to sell more than Gen 8 but Lord knows that people who have been hating Let's Go since the beginning deserve to eat some crow.
It makes no sense than if you don't want it to sell more than Gen 8 than say so. I don't think anyone should eat crow even though I'm enjoying let's go for the most part but i really hope it stays its own series and doesnt effect the next games.

I can't see these games selling more than 10M, honestly.

This is still mainline Pokemon game even if its not core Pokemon game, so from start 10m was like worst case scenario this game will do LT.
With good critics, very good impressions of players and great word of mouth, its seems that this game will 15m+ seller.

Probably already been discussed, but based on revenue, this should be one of the most successful Pokemon entries. The base game is $60 and the edition with the Pokeball is $100....and lots of people seem to be purchasing the latter. Compare that to $35-$40 for almost all previous games. If this hits 10 million or more and a couple million of the copies sold are the $100 bundle....that's a huge success.

Here's an actual scary scenario for some of you... what if Gen 8 isn't like LG, but is also a big departure.

It's a long shot, but imagine if Gen 8 is this open world BotW Pokémon some dream of? As much as it sounds like a pipe dream, it could also be a nightmare for some traditional fans.

I was thinking this myself. I'd love for some free roam camera too!
