I'd be shocked if Paramount didn't destroy any and all materials with the nightmare design that they still had.
That explains it. There's no way Hollywood suits could have pulled this out otherwise.
The great thing about this redesign is at first glance it looks like the whites of his eyes are attached like the real old school designs, too.
Regardless how the movie turns out, you have to say they really nailed the redesign.
Wow, I had no idea he was involved - he as such a great grasp of the character especially in his classic incarnations. I don't even care for Sonic that much but I adore his modern take on the classic Toei Sonic design.
I like this redesign so much I'd be happy if Sega adopted it in their future titles.
You can really tell that the inital idea was to somewhat ground him in reality. The new design looks more out of place and cartoonish in a live action enviroment but it actually works in the movies favor as it now has a bit of that Roger Rabbit flair.
Yeah, the problem with that was he was never going to look "realistic." He's a blue hedgehog roughly the size of a human child. He's a cartoon, he'll always stick out in a live-action movie.
Whoever brought Heese in for to lead the redesign did one hell of a Hail Mary pass to salvage the movie Sonic design into something acceptable. Massive props to Heese and the person who made the call to bring him in.
That's actually a really good design. Wouldn't mind seeing that used as a base for a variation of Sonic in a game.
Huge improvement. It's a mystery to me how professional artists working on the film thought that version one was okay like this.

The movie will be awful but it's nice to see jim carrey having fun for once.
One you'd shoot in the head thinking it was some sort of scrounging varmint. The other you'd go and pet and feed and squeeze it's fat cheeks.
Jim Carrey will hype it, besides most 3D Sonic games suck so its not like they have this untouchable source to take from
