I don't think he did much more for either games than let the teams pick his brains and give his opinion every so often. He has a day job and no financial stake in the games so he can't really commit in any substantial way.
There was another WB game released recently that claimed he was involved but came out before he'd even touched it.
However, the developer pedogree of the Dragon's Trap remake is arguably just as great as Monster Boy. While Monster Boy has the original series director back at the helm, Dragon's Trap had Omar "Bock" Cornut at the helm. Bock is a god in Sega Master System circles, he is the patriarch of all SMS hacking. He created Meka, an incredibly popular SMS emulator, and runs SMS Power. He is to Wonderboy, what Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley are to Sonic.
Ah okay, thanks for the heads up. He's a good sport fair play
Might that game you're referencing be Wonder Boy Returns on Steam?
I found the exact thread, a couple of people mentioning a game in a short thread doesn't make it 'widely considered'. It wasn't the most mentioned or agreed with game in the thread by a long shot either, Mario 3 and Kirby were the dominant responses.I don't see how partisianship plays into wider considerations of the general public, but go into any topic about 8-bit games on a decently educated website like Reset Era and you will without a doubt see people mentioning Dragon's Trap.
"Yeah no" and "personally not in my top 10" asides, of course.
In fact, just to test, typed in "best looking 8-bit games" into google, and surprise surprise, a NeoGAF link was the first result, and sure enough, within the first page there are Wonderboy 3 references.
Yeah it is truly probably the greatest remake project ever undertaken IMO.However, the developer pedogree of the Dragon's Trap remake is arguably just as great as Monster Boy. More importantly, he disassembled the Wonderboy III Binary by hand over about two decades, and used his notes from disassembling the game to make the remake as accurate as possible. For example, he used to have a blog post about how exhaustively he recreated the item drop system from the original as accurately to the original logic as possible. He is to Wonderboy, what Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley are to Sonic.
That's the one! It's on PS4 as well, I believe. I haven't played it since it launched and it's been patched a few times since then but it left a very poor impression.
Yeah honestly it's easily the cheapest looking of these recent WB releases, though I still quite like the art style. I suspect it's been made on a tiny budget

Hell, Dragon's Trap isn't even the best looking Wonder Boy on Mark III IMO. Monster World SMS, while a busted game, is clearly much better looking and even the original Wonder Boy has more detail in its graphics on average. The jungle area is really the only nicely detailed area in Dragons Trap SMS.
Okay, the PR guy on YouTube said that they're planning to release the PC version this winter, and, boy, I'm so disappointed.
Probably, but it's a very simple game and pretty much every aspect was broken: animation, character movement, enemy patterns, everything.

It definitely does, it has higher highs though, parts that look like early Mega Drive. Dragon's Trap has some crud too though, plain flat colour backgrounds in random colours half the time, but then detail at other times, like the jungle and canyons. Mouse man looks like crap and so do many enemies. It's just very inconsistent. Most of the game is very plain simple backgrounds, very repetitive and low detail. Mario 3 has vastly more variety while looking quite similar art wise, as expected given it was on a bigger cart to have more tiles, and the Famicom had free sprite flipping so could use cart memory much more efficiently than the Mark III too. And also much better style consistency"Yeah, no." Monster World straight up looks ugly in a lot of spots. And the main sprite for Shion looks like he's a hunch back because they couldn't recreate the exact sprite dimensions from the Genesis game due to the cell width and height limitations of the SMS.

D'oh, that's a shame :( Like many I'm more keen on the later RPG esque WB titles but I still find the original charming, it deserves better.
Weirdly enough that mirrors the Dragon's Trap remake, that came later on PC also. Wonder if Monster Boy will also get a mod to put in the comic characters from the Brazillian version of WB3:
Your video link doesn't work for some reason. The progression of this game has been bizarre...
It started out looking like a mobile game and compared horribly to the Dragon's Trap remake, but each revision has made it look more and more like the Dragon's Trap remake...
Looks actually good now, not liking the animu song though.

HE TURNED INTO MONSTERS, HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?!?
Nice. And good on giving us choices, seems some people are willing to drop a game over a single song.
