Kemp with Comeback POY. Finally living up to his contract , i guess
Seeing Kemp's resurgence was one of my main highlights of last year.

...are they not that dumb? I think people are underestimating how fucked the Mariners are.
They need to tear it down and rebuild but they can't even start the rebuild because they owe a bunch of bad players a ton of money and they threw full no-trades at a bunch of them: Segura, Leake, Cano and Hernandez all have 8 digit salaries and no trade clauses, and that doesn't even count having to pay Kyle Seager just as much to be awful. The Mariners owe $116,000,000 in 2019 to those players (plus Dee Gordon) who aren't good and most of whom have literal negative trade value. The only player on their team who has a positive value and is making money is Segura. The Mariners also have a comically bad farm system and because none of their veterans are worth anything, they have no real way to reload.
Mest beisbolWhere is the logic in trading FOR Cano and then turning around and trading Thor?
ideally you trade Thor to fill a number of other places, get a package that treats him as an ace with control until 2022, and you no longer have to worry if he is going to explode his harm and have no value in the next few years?Where is the logic in trading FOR Cano and then turning around and trading Thor?
Agreed

Interesting insight by Rosenthal that perhaps the Yankees will pass on both Harper and Machado and target Arenado next offseason. His argument for Arenado is that he's got greater intangibles, is a good clubhouse leader, grinds out ABs, a plus plus defender, and won't command a 10-yr contract. I haven't seen enough of Arenado to make an argument for or against, but interesting nonetheless as I never even considered the Yanks pursuing Arenado.
Arenado will be 2-3 years older than Machado/Harper during his free agency and isn't available until next year (and there's no reason to believe he won't command a similarly long deal unless he drops off this year). You take the guy who is younger and is available now while your championship window is wide open rather than wait for a guy who might not even enter the market or might want to play somewhere else. At that point why not then just wait until the following summer if/when Trout becomes a free agent.

Why would you want to pay someone $15,000,000 to play one season in the futureI like the signing. Guess dude wanted to rehab by the beach. Can't blame him, great town to hang out in.

point taken, I supposeRichards at least has the potential of being worth that amount. The $3m and under guys they've been signing for years haven't had that potential. A staff of Clayton Richardsses and Makitas and Bryan Mitchells ain't going to do much. $15m is the kind of money Danny Duffy, Alex Cobb and Mike Leake make in a year, and they're pretty god awful. So while it ain't bargain basement, it's still a deal with plenty of upside potential.
I mean look at the free agents... Marco Estrada, Ervin Santana, Lance Lynn... these guys will all likely fall in that range and they're garbage with no upside potential.
$15m just ain't that much in the SP market.
Do they still have to pay it even though Shields is a free agent? It ain't James Shields at least.
Since he's still on the payroll.
