A very Microsoft re-evaluation. MS is overall a pretty shitty company as well though, as are pretty much all companies of such scale and corporate culture.
All of those besides maybe Killzone are easy revivals.I think Sony wants something that could make them compete, not dead as fuck franchises the mainstream wouldn't give a shit about :p
They will be affected for sure but to a much less significant degree. Not a single CoD has released on the Switch for example, not even a crappy spin-off, and the only big Activision Blizzard games that released that I can think of are Diablo 3 and Overwatch both years and years late.
Not in the slightest. Great for MS tho lol.
What did they get? Aren't there Activision-Blizzard employees still striking? (ex. Raven's QA). Plus, I'd imagine that the AB union is siginificantly weakened by becoming part of a bigger company unless they expand to include a lot more people from the other Xbox subsidiaries (once they're officially acquired).
I Still can't wrap my mind around this!!! And here a thought Activision was an untouchable purchase; now I'm like 👀👀👀 at Ubisoft/EA/Take-Two.
Aren't live service games like fallout 76 staying on PlayStation? I would think they keep games like Warzone multi platform.
Not surprised it's the American company that's fast tracking the destruction of my favourite hobby. Greed is the only thing they know.
There's something to be said for the removal of Kotick from power as unilaterally good news, but even that appears to be an uncertain condition of the deal.
Sony has sold 5x as many consoles as Xbox with no Gamepass and very few exclusives. Sony is fine.I'm still in shock. If you're Sony, you HAVE to be sweating right now.
This acquisition would put them third in revenue. If Sony and Tencent can still make acquisitions I think it's safe to say anyone crying 'monopoly' over Microsoft doing it probably has other motivations than 'fair competition'
They couldn't' renege. They had a contract. And they had to honor it.MS didn't reneg on exclusivity deals for Deathloop and that Tokyo game, and so it's doubtful they'd pull Warzone. Furthermore I'd guess this year's COD is safe. But I'm thinking whenever Warzone is updated next, that update won't come to PS and it will slowly die.
Microsoft's endgame is two-fold.How do you recoup almost a hundred billion? Will game content increase that much in value and complexity to create?
It will be interesting to see if PlayStation will be totally excluded from this content. It could attract regulators, and it doesn't feel like it's a good direction for the gaming market.
i can't see nintendo ever wanting to sell. no matter how much money they offer.Nintendo is probably the big golden goose. Getting them would eliminate a console competitor and give them access to the most popular franchises in the industry.
This. Once a deal like this is announced you can't make any major changes.
LOL Xbox said "okay" and started Deebo'ing gamesIt's crazy how personal MS took all those "lack of 1st party games" jokes lol
"ok, bet" to the extreme
TBH that is what people said when Sony entered.i remember when MS entered the console industry 20 years ago and people saying "they don't know anything about games, m$ just going to use their money$ to buy everything and ruin the industry".
Microsoft buying up studios in their software arm's race doesn't benefit me. Having options on how and where to play games was optimal, now you most likely have to own 2 consoles to play games you could have previously played on 1.How is making games more affordable and streaming and cross play and cross save destroying your hobby??
Yes. I meant destruction literally. You moron.
The fact that Kotick is staying on as CEO is not from the TechRaptor article, it's from Microsoft's official statement. Obviously they can't fire him until they control the company, but they didn't *have* to state that he would still be running the division of the company in their press release, or frankly mention him at all.
I'll never understand "the right way to do it". Is it the right way to do it, or you just feel its the right way to do it because you like Nintendo and Sony? My opinion is there is no right way to do it, just the way it used to be done.
Is it though? Sony is a great place as it is. They've found a first party success formulate. Hell, if Ninendo can manage to thrive off of their first party, then Sony sure as hell can too.
People actually think Xbox cares about short-term revenue from microtransactions.
No, they're all in on Game Pass. That's the number one goal for Xbox.
Will keeping COD on PlayStation help grow Game Pass?
No. So it'll be exclusive (including Warzone).
Will keeping Kotick help grow Game Pass?
No. So he'll be heading off soon with his golden parachute.
In terms of the way the industry is going. If Microsoft can spend 70 billion on this they are not going to just stop now and Sony will be forced to buy publishers as well.
This might not hurt too bad for Nintendo, but if Ubisoft, Sega or a lot of smaller indie devs got bought it wouldn't be good.
I just don't think they'll risk just resting on their laurels. They have money in the bank as well after all.
All of those besides maybe Killzone are easy revivals.
I didn't mention Resistance because its probably harder than even Killzone.
Warhark never actually died, a significantly different game Starhawk sucked then Sony started to abandon MP games.
MAG just needs a reboot, with more of a Battlefield inspiration
Socom just needs to copy the Rainbow 6 Siege model and it would be perfect.
I wouldn't say it doesn't harm Sony, and I completely agree that Acti-blizz should be expected to be Xbox exclusive going forward.Nintendo will be fine.
But Sony?
Yeah, their first party games sell good but much of it's major sellers are third party...
It's biggest seller... Was Call of Duty and if you think the CoD after MWII is going to be on PlayStation? That's delusional, we saw this song and dance with Bethseda, they will make CoD (minus Warzone) a Xbox/PC series and so that is a huge loss. Kids aren't going to want to get the newest PlayStation to buy the newest CoD anymore. They're going to want an Xbox.
So yeah, people thinking this deal isn't going to harm PlayStation is really under some weird ideas that PS's biggest sellers are just it's first parties.
There's no way ms will put a exclusive tag on cod, I don't see that, that's alot if copies not being sold it so.
Do they really need to? Yes of course Call of Duty possibly leaving hurts them financially, probably more than any of them, but it's not going to stop selling PS5 units, or PS6 for that matter. I can see them continue to make smart partnerships of lesser caliber.
i can't see nintendo ever wanting to sell. no matter how much money they offer.
Remember that MS has tons of corporate contracts due to their OS and they invested in a company that is at the forefront of the MTX game. And with them introducing this "metaverse", it's likely we start seeing a lot of cross-game promotions and IP cross-inclusions.How do you recoup almost a hundred billion? Will game content increase that much in value and complexity to create?
It will be interesting to see if PlayStation will be totally excluded from this content. It could attract regulators, and it doesn't feel like it's a good direction for the gaming market.
