I don't know if anyone will get what I mean but there's like, a weird shared visual identity between this, Bionicle, and Soul Reaver that I can only attribute to cartoony early-2000s CGI edge.

Whatever it is I need more of it. The fact that it's intact in this remaster is astonishing to me.
This instantly brought my mind to Beast Wars lol

Shots casted lights around (no shadows of course), it looked amazing in the first Prime.
It's amazing how every effect we see here was also in the first Prime in some way.
And finally, the water looks fantastic! About time!
Ladies and gentleman: Retro fuckin Studios.
I mean like, do shots not light up a corridor when they travel down it in the original? I may have to fire it up at some point and check. I could have sworn they did.

They say resolution is native?

Also didn't noticed the option for full narration, which one is recommended for a first play-trough?

Man I wish the FOV was wider. I honestly felt a little bit uncomfortable playing this.

From what I can understand:

"None" gives you no narration.
"Partial" only gives you narration for the opening (definitely at least do this).
"Full" gives some suit notifications a voice. Things like "Recorded to your log book" whenever you scan something that's added to the log book and such.

"Recorded to Logbook" is on by default across all options. I believe the main difference with "Full" is that when you lose your suit powers in the prologue, the malfunction texts are said out loud by your suit. I don't know if I'd recommend partial either. Might be a nostalgia thing for PAL users but I think it comes off corny as opposed to the silent swelling of the music.

After this, I feel very confident about Metroid Prime 4. The only thing it needs is Kenji Yamamoto as the composer. OST half of what makes Prime games great for me, and I wouldn't bear a weak OST like Dread's.

What are the chances we also get the 2nd game Remastered? that's the one I really want to play.

I'll get this when the physical version comes out.
I'd say fairly high. IIRC the initial rumors/leaks about Prime Remaster being just the first game with fully overhauled visuals but perfectly faithful gameplay/design also stated that Prime 2 and 3 were possible if this performed well. Which, with the price point and buzz, seems like a lock.

Is this better than Primehack?

I mean...it depends what parts of primehack you want. You're not getting FoV, kb+m, ultra high res textures and arbitrary resolutions, customizable postprocessing etc with this out of the box. You will get new graphical effects, better geometry, things like that. What you see is what you get. Maybe down the road there'll be an equivalent fork of a switch emulator for this and we can have the best of both worlds.

I dunno if I'm just dumb, but when I tried playing with a GC controller under the classic control scheme, I couldn't figure out a way to bring the pause screen up. Pressing start would only bring up the map screen.

I've since transitioned to dual stick with the Pro controller, but was I missing something there? lol

The classic control scheme doesn't match an actual GameCube controller. Basically they didn't consider the GameCube controller for it.

youtu.be

Yes, the GameCube Controller Works in Metroid Prime Remastered! (+ Wii Pointer Controls!)

Yes, you CAN use the GameCube controller in Metroid Prime Remastered, amongst other control options we'll go over right now!__Video by: Joey Ferris - https:/...

There are narrated callouts for loading up each region of the game. "TALLON OVERWORLD", etc.. In Europe it was only when going between the Overworld and Impact Crater. In Japan every area had a callout, but instead of playing when accessing an area from another area, it was only upon loading a save.

I assumed this would be something like Halo Anniversary where they bolted stuff on top of the original engine, but this looks really different. They didn't recreate it in Unreal 4 did they? I guess there would be an Epic copyright somewhere or a splash screen.

Looks to me like they either ported the old code over to a new engine, or have a hybrid system running, with the old engine running the old logic, while a new engine handles the visuals.

According to the Metaforce folks (the people behind the reverse engineering of the original GC game), it seems to be the original game ported to the Tropical Freeze engine.

Is there another way to pull up the scan visor other than right on the d-pad? A littlllle awkward for me given how often I like to scan things.

I still don't get the Dread art style complaints. Game looked gorgeous in its natural environments imo.

The sterile EMMI rooms were meh, but areas like Ghavoran, Burenia and Hanubia were really cool.

Comparing anything to Prime's art style is unfair though, that much I get.

Dread looks and runs great too, yeah. It's a silly exercise to try and knock down one to prop up the other. They're also very different games.

Huh! That's... slightly unfortunate, I'd rather her not be objectified in any way if possible, plus it just looks kinda dumb. It might be in line with the original design though? Hard to tell since I'm not aware of any promotional renders that showed that part of the design, and the in-game model is low poly enough that it's unclear. There is a line which might be a crease in the concept art though. I do appreciate the desire to subdivide flat surfaces for visual interest, but this is low hanging fruit that they could've just avoided.

for what it's worth I don't think it's quite as ridiculous looking as 2's did sometimes and it feels more like an attempt to play into the bio-tech-y design of the suit rather than like... sexy robot ass. It does look a bit silly either way though.

I'm stuck on the second boss Hive Mecha, really dogshit gamedesign, it killed all my enthusiasm for the game.
I hope it's an exception rather than the norm.

How does it look in handheld mode? Is it native res?
The shop screenshots look clean as hell, if this is native I might buy it.

It's been almost 20 years and back then I couldn't deal with 1st person games, so I dropped the original game after about 2 hours and can't remember.

How does the gameplay hold up/ are there any QoL improvements? Does it feel dated for someone who'll essentially be playing it for the first time?

Absolutely incredible remaster and at a good price too. Retro putting this out for $40 compared to the $60 that Skyward Sword was for instance feels absolutely wild to me.

The game is gorgeous and holds a steady 60. It's the game that has impressed me the most in the system since Fast RMX. The new controls are great. Everything else is left untouched in regards to level design and combat scenarios. It's so good. It's so ridiculously good. And it was just a "here it is" kind of thing. I'm so happy this exists. One of the best games of all time somehow just got better. This is what remasters should be. The industry has much to learn from this and Dead Space.

If you haven't played Prime before, pick this up. If you have played Prime before, pick this up. Outstanding job Retro.
