http://nintendoeverything.com/capcom-almost-made-resident-evil-amiibo/

The Resident Evil Revelations games on Switch do actually feature amiibo support – just not with their own original figures. Once per day, you can obtain ammo or points. Niizuma shared another interesting tidbit in the interview. Any amiibo can be scanned, but if you use ones that are Capcom characters, you can get something slightly better. So if you happen to have any imported Monster Hunter Stories amiibo lying around, try scanning them and see what happens.

List of Capcom amiibo that give better loot.

Hmm, this system reminds me of Fire Emblem Echoes system of secret amiibo summons. In that game, certain amiibo like Daisy, Villager and Zero Suit Samus will guarantee you strong summons vaguely relating to the character. Surprised that no one mentioned this.

Skyrim does something similar where Zelda amiibos give you better items (including BotW outfit)
I stopped using it since after a while you'd acquire more items than needed, but it was certainly a nice feature.
I'll give this one a try when I start on RER.

The good thing with that is that it supports every single Zelda realted amiibo, even Smash Brothers ones. Unfortunately the only games that don't really have series wide special support are Super Mario games.

Mario + Rabbids only supports the four heroes (Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has unchanged Mario series amiibo support from Wii U's Mario Kart 8, so a good chunk of them are incompatible.

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga DX only supports amiibo of characters that appear in game in some form...which I guess makes sense but it shows how unambitious AlphaDream is. Also doesn't help that any amiibo besides Boo, Goomba and Koopa Troopa are near useless.

Super Mario Odyssey name drops all Super Mario amiibo but Goomba and Koopa Troopa. However, special functions are reserved for the following amiibo (non Wedding Peach and Bowser have limited support)

I like amiibo as figurines but it still kind of surprises me how Nintendo gets a pass with this model of micro transactions.

There was an article somewhere that Capcom wanted to make amiibos for Resident Evil. Specifically HULK and Lady HULK, whoever they are. It fell through for some reason, so I can see why they would do this.

I think a fair number of people buy the amiibo because of their fondness for the series or the figures themselves, and the functionality is deemed a nice bonus feature. I wanted that squishy Metroid just because it looked cool, and I haven't even bothered to scan it in for use with Samus Returns.

Unlike microtransactions, you only have to buy the amiibo once and you can use it as many times as you want. A lot of amiibo have use in multiple games. My Daisy amiibo actually got me a fair amount of stuff in 2017's Nintendo games, including access to Pikmin's bonus levels.

Amiibos are more than microtransaction for people like me who likes them as collectable items.
In fact, in-game usage is more of a nice bonus and not really its primary purpose for me.

The Monster Hunter Amiibos look real nice, but are they as nice as in photos in reality? Can the riders be taken off their backs without issue? Wow @ the weird Japanese names for Rathian/Rathalos/Barioth (although Barioth is bad too, especially when since Tri you can also have Barroth which is a completely different beast). Shame they didn't do at least one Amiibo for Monster Hunter XX to get some non chibi good quality monster/hunter for cheap Amiibo prices. Maybe they'll port World (Portable) at some point and do that then but I doubt that's gonna happen any time soon, if at all.

Yeah, the Amiibo (well, the non-Capcom ones at least) give you a random amount of money and BP (skill points) in Revelations 2. The way I look at it is it makes the grind to get to where I am in other versions of the game a lot easier.

As I was reading the title I was worried that this had something to do with the the upcoming Mega Man stream.
Now that would've been a Capcom Mega Man announcement all right.

yeah it depends on how you look at it

it's either:
I want something in this one game so I have to go buy a figure, this is bullshit!
or
I like this character so I'll buy the figure and get bonuses in all my Nintendo games from it, cool!

Yea, that's what I said I liked. I don't like the MTX portion.

For people who don't want toys lying around or can't afford or find them, they are screwed out on the in game unlocks in the game they paid full price for. Aka micro transaction.

They are way more expensive, they are a finite resource you have to compete to acquire or pay even more for, and they unlock things that usually have zero free alternative in game unlock method.

In this case they also seem to offer a p2w benefit instead of simply cosmetic.

Pretty much.

Regardless of how anyone wants to put it, these are Microtransactions, and they're not cheap if you're looking to collect them all.

I might break down and ask for a few main characters for my Christmas stocking.

Meanwhile, if I don't want to spend 10+ dollars on some often ugly figurines, then there's no actual storefront for me for purchase these perks untethered from a doll that may or may not actually be useful down the line. There's never been a good reason for this, and it has always astonished me that Nintendo has gotten a pass for this after those first couple of months.

Lol just sell them all if you don't have money. So entitled, if you don't agree with their method just don't support/buy them, whereas million others happily bought them for the lovely figurines.

Continue buying those glorious p2w AAA games.

They really are. I was surprised by them, but they are probably among the best quality of all amiibo (at least until BotW). The rider swapping is pretty smooth too, never had an issue.

Both Revelations games give you OP guns and characters right at the start. HUNK makes raids look like a joke. Not to mention Capcom is currently giving away weapons and mods for free through RE.net.

I could be wrong about this but isnt the absolute only thing actually "locked" behind the entire wave of amiibos the 2nd hard difficulty in samus returns? Everything else is unockable by just playing the games, no?

No, but, all the stuff that is locked are side stuff. Mario Party 10 locks amiibo party, AC: amiibo Festival is unplayable without amiibo (but new copies include 2 figures and 3 cards), Chibi Robo locks extra levels behind leveling the Chibi Robo amiibo (but includes amiibo), New Leaf has a few villagers locked to certain amiibo (I think), Code Name STEAM and the Fire Emblem games lock some extra characters to amiibo, Hyrule Warriors I think locked the spinner weapon.

All this locked content considered, I dont think its enough gor anyone to get angry about. Nothing egrigious to me. Now if we were talking a questline in zelda, a level in odyssey, or a blade in xeno 2, i could understand how some would get worked up about it.

These DLCs are tied to your amiibo and save. Once you get rid of your amiibo and save you can't access it. It's only unlocked as long as you have that amiibo.

BOTW locks a bunch of retro costumes for Link behind amiibo, many out of print. Captain Toad has bonus challenges in every level tied to an amiibo. I think you can get new characters with amiibo in Fire Emblem games. In Splatoon 2 you can't save a fucking loadout without buying an amiibo. Until very recently Shovel Knight locked co op mode behind its rare amiibo! Samus Returns has 4 different things tied to them, including two amiibo that are out of print for years.

Many amiibo are out of stock before they even release. Very few games give you an alternative unlock method, so you can pay a scalper or have an incomplete game. I don't see why paying $13 for some of these things is better than $5 horse armor.

I say this as someone who owns a bunch because I like the figure aspect. But people should be able to unlock the features for $2.99 digitally, or just let you unlock it by playing enough. It's bullshit just like anything else AAA publishers are doing.

It's more like dlc than microtransactions.

Only one time purchase

Horse armor, the original microtransaction, was a one time purchase. The term microtransaction predates the concept of a repeatable lootbox purchase. You also often have to make many purchases to get all a game has to offer, it's not like it's 1 amiibo per game. The total cost of the required amiibo often exceeds the cost of the game itself.

Now instead of $5 to get a reskinned horse, you pay $13+ to get a different colored Yoshi skin or a costume for Link or your mii. If you're lucky. If you're screwed you are buying $56 worth of amiibo to fully experience your $40 Metroid game.

This very topic is about a game giving you P2W rewards to reduce the grind to get better loot.

Agree generally.
But.
In my post i did say amiibo makes cosmetic upgrades more expensive.

"Fully experience" is an exaggeration. Even in metroid it's mostly the galleries which you can view for free online. With the fusion mode the dlc argument applies. Developed because it could be monetized.

Galleries, sound tests, and hard modes were in other prior Metroid releases. To remove them is to not fully experience the product.

Hard mode in Fusion and Zero Mission existed no problem without "being monetized." It's not like a Zelda second quest, it's some altered damage variables paired to a costume. The extra development is minuscule.

Hard mode still exists without amiibo

On galleries, sound tests, etc. Sure, but the economic argument still applies. Today or for this game, without that extra monetization the game wouldn't exist. (So the argument would go... )

And again, with the internet the galleries and sound test are less compelling.

I'm with you that it's not ideal, but it is what it is. Either amiibo dlc starts hurting bottom line or its gonna stay

Oh and a plus of amiibo being physical. You can buy, use, resell. So probably less expensive than regular dlc.

I understand how they work, but again, nothing i can see that "unlocks" from any amiibo is egrigious. Where are all these people that are fuming over not being able to wear an alternate link costume.

Look, things could change, maybe this was nintendo testing the waters to see how far they can push it and the next mario or pokemon have huge chunks of the game locked behind amiibo, and when that happens ill be pissed off as well, but to me, nintendos been playing it smart and have not overstepped their boundaries with the stuff you can get out of amiibos.

The Twilight Bow + Infinite Light Arrows in BOTW were locked behind the Super Smash Bros Zelda amiibo if that counts. Hey Pikmin ties 20 or so bonus stages to amiibo, and they are required to 100% the game. IN fact, the game only allows for specific figures to be scanned and not the characters. So you can scan Boo from the Mario series, but not Wedding Peach or Smash Bros Mario.
