I edited my previous post with other info, coping here again:

Media create advantages are Amazon.jp sales, Hardware SKUs sales are separated (ex: 2DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS), is used by the main publishers (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft), they share exactly sell-through for big games (not always), Famitsu is a range between 20% which is big, Dengeki rounds to the closer 0 or 5, while MC is exactly when they do.
Ah yes, i forgot that Media Create is the only tracker who spilts between hardware models, thats a good thing to have indeed. The other things are good too.

Regarding the overtracked sales (or undertracked) I remember a few cases but I will need to check and I can't now.
A latest game that I remember would be FFXV. According to Famitsu and MC the first shipment of the game was around 1.050k for Famitsu and 1.070k for MC.
However Dengeki's first shipment for this games was 1.170k, so 100k higher than the others, which is a big difference.
We don't have exactly shipped number from Square in Japan, so it might be that the ones wrong are Famitsu and MC. So, the the truth is that this example doesn't prove anything, just assuming.
No problem :) If there are examples that shows that Dengeki has overtracked, then its a way to tell for sure. I was just curious if there was any way to know for sure, and if it was a more common thing for Dengeki compared to Media Create and Famitsu.

What was the biggest Mario flop in Japan?
There aren't really any Mario flops. Tipping Stars is a game that had underperformed before but it was a budget release and almost nothing was lost from retailers.

2015 CY {2014.12.29 - 2016.01.03} 159. [3DS] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 41.824 / 41.824 (6.893 <10,04%>)
2016 CY {2016.01.04 - 2017.01.01} 329. [3DS] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 11.680 / 53.504
2017 CY {2017.01.02 - 2017.12.31} 667. [3DS] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 2.490 / 55.994

2015 CY {2014.12.29 - 2016.01.03} 396. [WIU] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 11.065 / 11.065 (2.517 <12,68%>)
2016 CY {2016.01.04 - 2017.01.01} 698. [WIU] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 2.680 / 13.745
2017 CY {2017.01.02 - 2017.12.31} 785. [WIU] Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars <PZL> (Nintendo) {2015.03.19} (¥2.800) - 1.629 / 15.374

Fair enough. Still, can it get there? Is it the sort of game that can keep on selling 10k-20k per week in the following months?

Yeah I think it can still make it (Final mix or budget re-rerelesses practically guarantee it if the original release falls a bit short). It won't at full price though. I expect the discounts to start coming in by next week at retail.

Is has already started dropping on Suruga. https://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/107002054000

With Apex being the next big WW hit are there any indications Japanese gamers are playing it? Anybody have a Japanese psn account? Maybe you could check the number of ratings it has on the store..

I haven't heard anyone talking about it so far (not to say it won't catch fire later).

Worldwide hits sometimes fly right by Japan.

Like Fortnight is a big hit here but PUBG, not so much.
Minecraft is massive but Roblox is mostly unknown.
Few Japanese people have seen or heard of Seinfeld but Dharma and Greg was a smash.
The Simpsons are best known in Japan for a series of commercials they did for the soft drink CC Lemon almost 20 years ago, most people don't realize they also had a television show, but the Powerpuff girls became crazy popular.
And in reverse, Terry Gilliams's Tidelands was a massive commercial failure in every country it was released in except... Japan. Same with Battlefield Earth.

Japan is weird.

That's odd because I've seen a ton of Japanese PUBG content but basically no Japanese Fortnite content.

Like the highest viewed "PUBG" tagged video I can see on Niconico has almost 3 million views: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm32863142

And the highest viewed "Fortnite" or "フォートナイト" tagged video I can see on Niconico has less than 300,000 views: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm33101829 (I hate virtual these virtual characters)

Note that I also searched with the "ゲーム" tag with both since there are a ton of non-video-game vids for both.

Currently it is Fortnite > 荒野行動 > PUBG. Fortnite is a bit more popular with younger children and 荒野行動 seems to be more popular with young teens. I've never seen someone talk or play PUBG in real life - but this is simply my experience.

That says more about the people that you hang out with than anything else. Like, I've never seen someone talk or play Fortnite in real life but that's because pretty much all of my video game friends I've known since high school where we played Counter-Strike Source and Team Fortress 2 and thus have no interest in Fortnite. However if I hung out with people who are more new to gaming or on the younger side then I'm sure I'd get an earful of the latest buzz on Fortnite. I'm intelligent enough to know that just because the people I hang out with aren't interested in something that doesn't mean that a ton of other people have different thoughts.

Whereas something like Niconico Douga which is so ingrained in the Japanese netizen culture is surely more representative than the people you know or the people I know. That's why I brought it up.

That said, I assume the kanji is Knives Out? That's one that I know to be more popular than both Fortnite and PUBG.

I hang out with children ages 6-13 because I run a programming school for a software company...

knives out sounds right, not a hundred percent sure about English titles though.

Regarding the PS4, I think a price cut will happen in April.

The current line-up from April through August seems really light, especially for Japan. Summer months could still be fleshed out tho.

Yeah, a golden week ps4 price drop is happening I think. Not sure if it'll be permanent or another month or so promotion. I thought Granblue would be releasing in the summer but Cygames and Platinum splitting ways on it might mean it still has longer to go than I thought.

That's very optimist, I think the game is no longer slated for 2019.

Funny, I saw an unreliable leaker make the same tease (edit: just saw that that tweet was made 25 min after Gibson, so they're probably piggybacking). Capcom has said that they weren't done with Monster Hunter on Switch, so maybe we will see something this year? Maybe we see something during that 15th anniversary in March?
I'm ready for the flames lol

We'll get MH Stories... I mean, RE4 sold 2 million on the Wii, and what did we get? More RE on rails.

That said, I'll be cautiously optimistic that there have been enough signs by now for Capcom that they should actually bring a new normal MH game to the Switch. I mean, they are bringing something like Dragon's Dogma to the Switch this time around after all.

Not at all, he's an analyst (forgot the name of the company he works for), and unlike Serkan Toto, don't remember him ever teasing anything (or being privy to any sort of insider info).

I admit, I'm surprised MHXX Switch sold as much as it did. What's the last known number for Japan? Completely lost track of this one.

A MH on Switch totally makes sense especially considering the domestic market. Capcom is known to bring their successful IPs everywhere and MH won't be an exception.

Attention is on Iceborne. If anything they will announce a retail version of the expansion for Japan.
Even if the rumor is wrong, all hands won't be on a DLC/Expansion. Most of the staff should be already working on the sequel.

Capcom said a few months back that they want to have 2 big AAA games per fiscal year. Looking at what they shipped the past year, there is not a lot of options.

With a 3DS port selling close to a million in the west a Switch exclusive MH would do huge numbers in Japan and worldwide. Its only a matter of time. Capcom already gave some hints of a Switch MH last year.

MHXX performance is giving me Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition flashbacks. Can't wait for Monster Hunter lightgun games.

Oh for sure, they will want to be hitting PS5/XBO early so they can several MHW sized entries.
