Help me out. The folks in the pics are stuck in long lines to return to America, but are already in O'Hare? I'm confused. I thought US Customs for re-entry was typically handled in other countries. And also, aren't US citizens returning home exempt from the travel ban? So confused. Sorry.

I'm a socialist and not cool with billionaires in general but Pritzker has been surprisingly good since winning in 2018: passed $15/minimum wage immediately, protected women's rights to choose (if the Supreme Court comes for Roe...) and is pushing for a progressive income tax that raises rates for only folks making more than $250,000.

Going after Trump in a smart way on social media about this is great. I'm sure the governor of Texas is too busy kissing ass to call the Feds our.

Customs are always done upon landing in the US as far as I know, regardless of whether you're a citizen or not, I've always had to go through customs upon landing at least. US citizens are exempt but no one trusts the Trump administration so it's probably best to come home as soon as possible. When he announced the travel ban Trump said it was for everyone and it took them more than half an hour to clarify that it was only for foreign nationals. Between the federal government's incompetence and the possibility of airlines cancelling flights, it's probably in most people's best interest to get home immediately rather than wait it out

Why are people assuming all these people are citizens? Not everyone who lives in America is a citizen and trusting the government to honor whatever status you are and treat it as equal to citizenship at this time seems risky.

Understood. Thanks for clarifying.

Hoping this calms down by Tuesday. My wife is flying to Michigan to pack my son up from school and bring him back same day.

Agree with everything you said. I didn't vote for JB in the primary and wrote in my vote from the primary in the general because he was "just another billionaire" but he has been surprisingly progressive thus far. I'm glad he was on Meet the Press and is really amplifying this. He knows that if he can get people talking on Twitter or in the media he will get Trump's attention.

Not true, depends on what international airports you're flying through. The US currently has has 15 preclearance locations where travelers will go through the same customs procedure as if you were on US soil. My wife and I flew through Toronto last year where we went through all of the customs check. When we landed in US, we were just in the domestic terminal because we had already cleared customs.

My wife's best friend and her family are on their way back from Spain as we speak. Her European vacation has turned into a nightmare. She was supposed to go from Greece to Spain to Italy but then the travel ban was announced without the important fact that Americans could in fact come home. She couldn't get a ticket back to the US from Greece got to Spain only to have Italy close and then have Spain shutdown as well. When she gets back she plans to self quarantine after taking an Uber from the airport. If she hasnt already got the virus it would be a shame the long lines at JFK are what gives it to her.

Mayor Lightfoot blames federal government for 'unacceptable conditions' at O'Hare, violating CDC recommendations and putting travelers at risk
Officials are working Sunday to try and prevent another chaotic night at O'Hare International Airport, where an influx of international travelers awaited health screenings in crowded conditions Saturday night. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blasted the federal government for what she said was a lack of preparedness. "Today's going to be another tough day," Lightfoot said during a news conference Sunday morning from O'Hare's Terminal 5, the international terminal of the busiest airport in the world.

Coronavirus in Illinois updates: Here’s what happened March 16 with COVID-19 in the Chicago area

Illinois officials reported 12 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state's total since the start of the outbreak to 105. Get the latest updates here.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot addressed her concerns and disappointment Sunday regarding the "exceedingly long lines" and several hours' waits reported at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport Saturday night due to enhanced coronavirus screenings.

"This is utterly unacceptable, going forward, we have to turn in a different direction and I specifically want to address these comments to Vice President Pence and members of the federal coronavirus Task Force," Lightfoot said.

"Not only are you creating a disaster, not only are you creating a hazardous circumstance that threatens the public, you risk causing serious illness and death."

No one should blame a single person who rushed back to the states after that horrible announcement.

Families would risk being stuck in Europe for an unknown amount of days. It is ridiculous to look at the airports and think, "What were these people thinking coming back all at once?"

The failings of this situation lies at the feet of this administration for not properly communicating or planning.

Totally agree. People were rightly terrified. Fuck this administration to hell.

From the CDC:
more than 97 percent of people who contract SARS-CoV-2 show symptoms within 11.5 days of exposure. The average incubation period seems to be around 5 days. However, this estimate may change as we learn more about the virus.

This is really precise screening! All of these people in the pictures could be infected and contagious, right?
Well it is the airport... where they are masters of the illusion of safety.

Just got back from a Qatar Airways flight through JFK T8 and there were no probs for me at all, but I guess Qatar is not on the shit list (yet)... though an LHR flight on the other carousel was also fine.
