I assume if you add all the subthemes together for Space, that's going to be right up there as well. Although I guess there might be a bit of a distinction between spaceships and 'planetary exploration' - while both are spacey, there's different flavours to those.

Sure.

But space was already in the top 3.

This is akin to a 'Game of the Forever' vote and Candy Crush coming out on top. Depressing.

It's 90 years of Lego the company not Lego the brick, which Bionicle had a 11 year run and helped save the company so it's perfectly valid
Actually kind of salty that they booted out Adventurers despite it having more votes than Castle. I want Johnny Thunders!
Yeah Adventurers was cheated, it would have been a great divergence from the other three themes too. The 3 traditional lines in the final round all get plenty of reprisals
I wonder what made the 2016 reboot fail if there's clearly a LOT of nostalgia and interest in BIONICLE
Bad timing, and personally I found the line too rigid. Didn't have the accompanying Giant technic builds either

which one, so i know how to appropriately judge you?
at least space is in the heart and spirit of lego. Bionicle, i dont even know wtf this is.

i mean although I love classic space my true love was the 8084(?) technic car chassis I got for Christmas with a damn working gearbox and engine and massive foam tyres.

2016 had the "reboot" issue, since it was classic characters with a "new take" on the lore, which kept most of the old fans relatively uninterested without really offering much to hook anyone new into being fans. Not to mention the hook - buildable action figures in a can - doesn't really have the same effect or appeal to kids nowadays. The only other potential hook were the toys themselves, and we already had those before in the form of Hero Factory - so ultimately it brought nothing new to the table while also throwing most of the past attachment to the line away.

To be fair also, Bionicle ran for several years while any single one of those Space themes only had a year or two, so there's more people who grew up with Bionicles as a line than, say, M-Tron.

Think G2 also had a smaller budget than previous years to work with.
Anyway lets go Round 2!

Oh man, I was really hoping Aquazone would make it to top 3. This was my childhood and I still love it!

I found bricksets archive of old Lego catalogues and I spend the last hour poring over them like it's porn. That shit takes me back, I still remember play scenes and a lot of sets from them ('83-'91+ era)

Fair assessment

I guess the detachment from where the story left in Mystika was a turn off

Pretty much no story, and I think the sets were uninteresting. They just relied on rebooting the old Toa/Makuta at first instead of doing something really new, and then for the villains they went with these kind of generic "skulls" and "beasts" that didn't even have names.

Also I don't think people fully understand what an Adult-centered Bionicle build can be. These characters have always seemed boney and cheap from the official toy builds, but the models you can make from these pieces can be absolute monstrosities and really flesh out a character design past what's normally possible with exchangeable pieces, and it's something we've never really seen with the Lego system outside of debatable Star Wars sets. Hopefully we'll see something on the level of typical MOCs, but for one of the more legendary characters/beasts of the series.

I don't know if there are any bionicle-themed blogs or galleries specifically, since I mostly just wanted to grab some impressive MOCs and searched for a youtube vid about them. They do seem to be primarily located on Flickr, though; here are the links to those builders galleries specifically:

This is a solid one from the lego OT, it's doable on a smaller scale too

That looks extremely fun to build.

Fuck no, I'm annoyed just thinking about sticking this thing together.
(But it looks awesome I totally agree)

Does Bionicle even have set pieces or is it just anorexic looking bland robots?
They've always had the iconic masks and mechanical appendeges, but they're mostly thin and simplistic because they were aimed at younger buyers for $10 a figure. If it's aiming at the adult crowd, it could actually end up looking closer to the original premise - half mechanical, half biological lifeforms. "Bland robots" is anything but what Bionicle is theoretically lol

Tripped me up for a minute too, but they used rods rather than the actual axle pieces, so a little less secure but movable

As a Bionicle fan I am really happy that Bionicle is at the top
And Bionicle s the only original theme at that Top 4, the other 3 can get sets anytime when Lego feel like it, Bionicle will most likely only get a new set by wining this poll.
Pirates, Castle and Space themes have been done by every other toy Company.

But this poll does show what they sould do more sets for at least for the 90 Anniversary, which may be Space

The original line had similar builds of smaller scale too all the way from the beginning

it was never just the canisters, those were just the entry point. Later waves got more complex, although you also got more custom pieces. There were even system style diorama sets. Bionicle had a large scope

Second round is support polling rather than a numbers equal winner. Both rounds were obviously polling for 18+ nostaglia sets but I'd expect something new for everything in the second round, even outside the prize

I basically got out of Bionicle after Mask of Light (I did get two Metru Nui Matorans and bought Lewa and his Matorans during the 2008 Toa Nuva set), so some of my last great memories of Bionicle were that Makuta set and the Takanuva set. What a great line Bionicle was, I constantly think about buying the original 6 Toa Mata again but I know that would lead me down a rabbit hole of rebuying all my old sets.

It was close between Bionicle and Castle for me, but I went with Bionicle.

As people have already said, we've gotten Classic Space theme sets with the LEGO Movies, and they JUST put out a Classic Pirate set (I think they did a 3 in 1 pirate ship recently too), and you know as soon as the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie comes out there will be a bunch more pirate sets.

Castle I have a lot of nostalgia for (it was one of the first sets I had as a kid), but as with Pirates and Space, I just know they'll come out one even if it doesn't win this vote. I think they just released that fantastic Medieval Blacksmith set which is like a modern day Castle set.

Of the 4 to chose from in this round, Bionicle is the only one I don't see them actually making on their own without a fan vote like this.

I gotta say, my bias for growing up with them aside, I would definitely say Bionicle are just as worthy as the others for the top four. Each of those for themes did something big for Lego in their own way, and tbh they really should just do one set for each, but I guess that's not the point of this whole thing.

I do want to add to the discussion about Bionicle being trash though to say that, while I know it wasn't what everyone grew up with, and isn't one of the "classic" themes that continued to echo for decades after into cool and interesting sub-themes, I think it's inclusion in the celebration of 90 years is still important and has to do with not only the whole "saving Lego from going bankrupt" thing, but also because of the effect it's continued to have in the two decades since it started. Bionicle gave Lego the proof that they could create their own "IPs" essentially. Instead of just relying heavily on Star Wars and the like, they began making their own stories that would last more than just one theme year, which eventually led them to Ninjago, a ridiculously popular and well-received theme that I am certain is going to be looked back on in 20 years as just as important of a milestone for Lego as Bionicle was. I'll always love me some classic sets that are held together as a theme where you make the story yourself, but it is also nice to have a story to follow, with changes to look forward to each year (even if this all just serves as a ploy to sell more toys).

Anyways, at the end of this whole thing, I'll be happy with whatever wins. They all have potential to have a really nice set to honor their legacy, though I do see why Castle would be fought harder for, Lego kind of has done Castle themes dirty over the last several years. I do think the best play for them though is to just make a set for each and put it under some banner of important milestones in the 90 year history of Lego or something. Or combine all four into some giant, theme-clashing set.

I think making it to round 2 was probably enough since it is the 20th anniversary after all, it outdoing most of the other themes in round one definitely didn't hurt. Although considering its the main 2000-2010 line in the final four(Pirates heyday was 89-97, the revivals weren't as big), any votes split across the 97-2004 era have a higher chance of going to it. It'll split a bit with pirates but there's way less overlap than space and castle. Then again this round isn't about pure numbers, that's why it sealed

Also rumor is there's a 3 in 1 creator castle this summer

I'd like to think it was planned since it was included and they know how the fanbase could be, but I would not be surprised to see them announce a Bionicle 20th anniversary set(s) under the 18+ line when they announce the winner of the 90th anniversary set is one of the other 3. It's pretty obvious they had some plans connected to this.

I want a Seinfeld Apartment. I know that's not what this is but still. There's Friends which I'm not into at all. Come on give it to me.

Well then you are in luck, because there will be an Ideas Seinfeld apartment being released this year.

native

Note that this is not the final set, but the Ideas project created by Brent Waller.
