Contact cleaner works for me. It isn't ideal for me to have to do this but it fixes them pretty easily. I give them a clean every couple of months even if they aren't drifting.

Yet to own a Switch but this makes me uneasy about buying a Lite. Wouldn't even be able to swap the joycons out if there was a problem.

I mainly use my Pro controller so my Switch was fine until about a month back but then it happened and it really sucks.

PSA- Fellow Aussies - I am going to try using some WD-40 Fast Drying contact cleaner which Ive heard works. Will post back if it works for me.

I've had two separate left Joycons (Original and then a replacement) start to drift.
Just speaking from my opinion, it's extremely disappointing to be having such quality issues with an $80 controller from Nintendo.

i have three sets and none of them drift. it's super weird that i never have problems with controllers. my launch ps4 controller looks like new too and people were complaining about that one too.

My left joycon can't seem to always stay connected to the console. It's like it is not "clicking" to the console as firmly as before. I bought a Hori one with a dpad to replace it though.

Yep, both my Joy-Cons drift. The left is a bit worse. Anyone buying the new Switch with affixed Joy-Cons better be ready for eventual frustration.

No drifting yet after a year of light use. The right stick makes an annoying "springy" sound though.

Have two sets and thankfully, no drift after 2+ years of usage. Hoping it never arrives, but since I've just written this, I fully expect to start my switch the very next time and find it drifting.

Becoming?
This has been a widespread problem since launch!
When I bought my switch brand new it started having this problem after a few days, the store sent it to Nintendo for inspection and they reported that nothing was wrong with it, and they just returned it as it was. After that I bought the hori dpad joycon and I have had zero problems with that.
This joycon problem has made me wary of buying any Nintendo controller in the future.

Honesty I feel like buying a lite would be to display poor decision making with your money :P I mean if you even slightly about the drift, HUGE risk. But Nintendo would fix your system under warranty.

Yeah how is it becoming a problem now exactly? It has been from day one.

Also

Despite being a Nintendo Fan at heart, its absolutely clear that there is a serious bias towards Nintendo if this hasn't become an issue on the level of the RRoD. Controllers and especially the Joycons can become expensive real fast, to replace them so frequently because their build quality is shit is a true disappointment, especially when it comes from the company who used to be as famous as Nokia for product durability.

This will never be on the level of the RRoD because the system remains playable - and most users have a spare controller at hand. But I agree, Nintendo should have issued extended warranties for all for this matter - especially if it hasn't been fixed in newer batches. Also it's disappointed because you could trust Nintendo to build the sturdiest systems around.

Voted no: Two pairs from launch year units with a lot of use and I've never encountered it myself. One set are the grey cons, one set are the mix blue and red.

Shit. The cursor started drifting upward on the menus in Bloodstained a few times, but I'm not sure if it's the game or the Joy-Con because Bloodstained is janky as shit.

I really hope not, because that's the pair with the costum shells and d-pad.

My left joy-con lasted a whole six months of light use before drifting started. Worst piece of shit controller I've ever used. My launch day Vita has lasted years of heavy use without a single issue. I also had to send in the joy-con twice for them to acknowledge that something was wrong with it and replace the stick under warranty. I know it's just a matter of time before their cheapo garbage sticks drift again.

Nintendo should be forced to replace every single unit out there with a new unit without this design flaw (graphite pads wearing down). They cheaped out and put garbage sticks in these expensive controllers - and they keep selling this broken shit to consumers well knowing what absolute shit they're selling. Nintendo is a terrible company.

Mine is drifting too in both Switch consoles in my house. This is completely unacceptable in $70 controllers.

Does this still happen with newer Joy-Cons?

That would be really embarrassing for Nintendo.

Yes, it sucks and even though cleaning solved the problem, it just came back. I play with hands clean and don't sweat, the sticks are just badly designed.

My og joycon started drifting after a year so I bought a new pair. Then after another year, this pair started drifting too. So I bought a DIY kit from Amazon with two joysticks and replaced them both. Took like 30 mins even for a scrub like me. Both work perfectly now.

So yeah it's defo an issue and hopefully the Switch revision comes with revised joycons as well.

Did you just spray around the stick or did you open up the joycon?

I tried that around the stick and I think it worked for a bit, but it's back. Doing to lean runs in Trials is impossible for me.

Did you spray under the little "sheath" at the bottom of the stick. I used contact cleaner on both my sons Red Marion joycons and my Yellow ARMS ones and it's fixed the issue in both cases.

Not ideal but an easy fix would be allowing users to adjust the deadzone in system settings or an option to re-calibrate a stick (those things where you get asked to push the stick forward, back, left, right and then centre). I think Sony/MS should do something like this as well as their controllers can also have similar issues.

I use my mums eyelash curler to get under the stick and swirl it around.

Works for a good week before devolving into drifting shenanigans

Lucky I guess. My launch PS4 controller and launch Xbox One S controller work fine. But a second Xbox controller turns off randomly and my left joycon drifts. Luck of the draw it seems.

I don't think motion control means anything in this instance

ok so i read it the article and this is about the analog joystick moving without actually being touched?

if then, never experienced it myself as well...although my joycons are the red-ones (mario odyssey bundle) so maybe that's a separate batch from the initial launch model?

This makes me weary as fuck about the switch lite. Have nintendo officially commented on this yet?

Started happening to my right joycons pretty badly recently which has basically made SMM2 rather unenjoyable to play since Mario now has the habit of randomly scrolling the camera in maker mode.

BotW is unplayable now due to this problem for me. Everytime link is on a thin ledge or narrow path he just walks off on his own. Really frustrating.

First it was drifting, but it was on warranty and Nintendo repaired it. Now the battery died or something, it only works when attached to the switch and the warranty expired a few weeks ago 😭

Always has been a problem for me. All my Joycons have it. The ones from my launch unit as well as the the three i bought since. I'm using rubbing alcohol and that fixes it for a time, but in the end it always comes back. I don't want to buy new ones because i know they will have this problem. The main reason i'm not buying the Switch lite is that you can not dock it but this problem would be reason no.2. I want a fucking redesign of the Joycons.

I haven't had it happen yet but I'm not a heavy user so based on that poll there's a good chance I will. They need to get on top of this.

Launch Switch no issues; gray joycons . Second set of joycons bought about a year later , gray joycons, no issues.
My brother had a joycon that drifted though; red joycon. Got a replacement through Nintendo, had issues again with it months later. Fixed it on his own and good ever since.

So you can still send them in to be fixed even if they are launch joycons, the problem is just paying for shipping and waiting for them to come back?

That wouldn't be a big deal for me.

Just noticed that the left joycon on my launch Switch is drifting. I usually play with the Pro controller so I have no idea how long this has been happening, my kids use the joycons though but they haven't mentioned it.

I'm on my second set of Joycons but going to use my old ones as practice for fixing them. It's inexcusable though for Nintendo to keep ignoring the issue when it's so widespread.

I have a launch day Switch and grey joycon set. I play in handheld mode more often than docked and hadn't had any joycon issues at all. Then, about three weeks ago, my left joycon started drifting like mad. Now it is a constant issue. In BOTW, Link will casually stroll off cliff edges unless I stop him. At the same time, the left joycon flashes low battery way more often than the right joycon and I can't make any sense of that.

I hope the Switch Lite doesn't have this issue as those controllers can't be replaced. It's very disappointing that Nintendo doesn't see this as an issue worth addressing.
