I didn't figure Keanu Reeves of all people would sit down and deliberately play an unfinished busted ass game especially while it was still being developed, but I'm going to be charitable and say someone maybe handed him a controller for like two minutes one time to let him spin the camera around his model or something.
If you want to count that as "playing" or not, that up to you, but it's an easy thing to make true on a semantic level.

That's surprising. Most VA and even actors don't get to experience the media they are working on until around launch time. In term of video games, not everyone plays them anyway or even have the time.

I mean, it's possible CDPR isn't lying in that he has played the game. They didn't specify how long or that he even personally owned a copy. If during development they handed him a controller for two seconds, then he technically did "play the game" and likely enjoyed it.
CD Projekt is scrambling how to answer this. Their good name and sterling reputation is on the line, after all.

I remember some old interview with Jennifer Hale. She's not a gamer and at the time had never played Mass Effect (though I think in the years since she has actually played through the games if I'm not mistaken). The interviewer was asking about various characters in the games and she had to be reminded of who some were and whether they were heroes or villains.
It was a funny moment, like, in one sense, Jennifer Hale has a more intimate relationship with Commander Shepard than anyone else on earth, but in another sense, for her those characters and moments were just words on a page in one acting job among many many others.
I can't ever really imagine them saying "No, he hasn't played it" when being asked that question. The chances of them being caught out are so slim, but alas, they were.
For real though, how has Cavill not starred in a game yet? Seems like he would be so down with that. Maybe he's too bankable right now in film but... so is Keanu Reeves so 🤔
This is what I think as well. He may even have controlled the character for a few minutes and walked around the city, but I doubt it's anything beyond that. That way they could technically say he "played" the game and loved it.
